Hello ladies! So I was looking around the forum for protective styles, and after all the suggestions I got for protective styles and such, I think that twists would be a best way for me to retain length. My first full year of being natural will be this upcoming August 1, 2010 (Yay!! lol)... Anyways, that leaves me 3 months until my one year natural hair anniversary and I want to have a lot of hair growth by that time. I got the idea of the Twist for Growth Challenge from "ooops2" (there may be one more 'o' in her username)... and that challenge was in 2008, so who wants to join me for the Twist for Growth Challenge for 2010??? Since its the beginning of May, its a great time to start. I looked at the old Twist for Growth Challenge thread, so I suggest we could use the same kind of rules:

1. Wear twists for at least 1 week (I will try to go for 2 weeks with twists, and then 5 days of a twist out, and then twist again)
2. You can wear your hair out for only up to 5 days after taking your twists out (like in twist-outs, afros, wash and go, etc).
3. Then twist up again
4. Maintain Moisture, especially to ends ( I will be adding an olive oil, jojoba oil, and avacado oil mixture to keep my twists lubricated)
5. DC after each wash (so every week or every 2 weeks depending on how long you keep your twists in)
6. Low Manipulation
7. Post a picture of your twists at the beginning of the challenge, and post an updated pic every 2 weeks... Also include what products you are using for your twists and for moisturizing!
8. The challenge will be for 3 months: from May 7, 2010- August 7, 2010
Anyone who finds out about this challenge later on is free to join as well!

For those who are having difficulty keeping their twist-outs fresh (if you want to wear it for the full 5 days), I suggest looking at this youtube video by Freeworship on how to maintain your twist-out style... it really helped me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2pEMnyJ49o

I think this would be a great way for all of us to stick to a protective style and support each other while doing it!

Post and include your intial twist pic as soon as you can!
(I am twisting my hair now, so I will post a pic of my twists later today)

Who is with me for this challenge??? :yep:

I just began a personal twist challenge this week! I'll join you, God willing.

I realize that my problem is retention so I plan to keep my twists in for 2 weeks (pre-pooing, washing, dc'ing, moisturizing while in them) and then taking them down to blow dry (on cool) and retwist, God willing.

Thanks for joining me! Hopefully we can get many more to help support each other in this challenge! Quick question, when you blow dry on cool, is that to dry your twists so you can do a dry twist? I usually twist on damp hair, but have never done dry twists. Do they last longer??

To do my twists : one night before 4 big cornrows to sleep.the next day my hair is stretched that way. Then i add Elasta Qp Mango butter ,it is slipery but my hair is so soft and shiny and moisturized. :)

Then to moisture (i do it every day): spray my vaporiser ( water+glycerin+sweet almond oil, and sometimes aloe vera added in it)/ im soon gonna buy s-curl drip activator

To seal: i love castor oil or carribean black castor oil. it is just ...wow for me.

ps: don't mind those gaps for those thinking im growing holes. im just to lazy to seperate hair with a comb so i just crab big parts without drawing a line. i gon faster.

Hey Hey I'm in too! My hair is usually in twists! I will post pics when I get some new twists.. these are a bit raggedy.
Does anyone know how to cowash your hair in twist without it becoming too fuzzy. I've started cowashing daily or almost every day and after a week my twists are a hot mess!

Personally, any water on my twists = TOTAL MESS! :nono: lol.... my hair gets pretty frizzy too. I just tie my twists down with a scarf when I'm sleeping or exercising and use my oil mixture to keep my ends moisturized. But with my twists... water is a NO NO! lol

when i moisturize my hair with water and seal, it just gets messy, frizzy. but it really keeps moisture. (when i bagy too )

KURLYCARAMEL: tell me ,i thought moisture had to have water base? do you only put oils to your mixture?

I'm in. Coincidentally I decided this weekend that I would twist my hair so that I can achieve as much growth as possible. I've been natural 6 months and I'm hoping for dramatic improvement by my 1-year anniversary. Also I recently saw the cutest Sistalocks, so they may be an option once I assess my hair after a year, depending on how my hair is faring. On my twists I plan to use coconut oil and Jamaican Mango & Lime product.

Thanks for your response. How do you deal with the sweat from your workout remaining in your hair? My "issue" is I workout a lot and I work out hard! (No worries here I'm not stopping working out because I'm going bald :lachen:) So I need to wash my hair at least every other day.. I'm just realising this.. before I would go a week without washing it but then I realised that my hair was dry and breaking even though I was moisturizing it daily.. I realised it must be the sweat that's causing the issue (I only realised this a week ago)
I'm not the girl who likes combing her hair daily.. in fact I barely comb it at all.. I just twist and go..
Maybe I just need to embrace the fuzz and move on :) Any other tips I'll be grateful for!

You're welcome! Thank you for starting the challenge.

Yes, I blow dry on cool to straighten my hair and then twist. I do this to reduce the SSK's. I can't tell you if twisting on dry or wet hair lasts longer since I shampoo/cowash/dc with my twists. Once water hits them, it's over lol.

This will be my first challenge! I can definitely dig this. I'm going to officially start tomorrow (the 9th) since Sunday is my wash day. I already twist my hair and keep them in from Thursday to Sunday, so I think I can handle 7 days. I have been trying to keep up low mani anyway.

Here's a pic of my twists from last week:

I'm using Shescentit Coco Creme Leave-In, Gillian Butter, and Moisture Mist.

Yea you're definately right... so I guess you can say I am just "lubricating" my hair by using oil... when I wear wash and go's or twist out's thats when I actually "moisturize" with a water-based product... but with my twists, my hair does much better with only oil. Its okay to do that when my hair is in twists, because I am not manipulating my hair.

When I exercise, I usually don't sweat as much in the middle of my head, more around the edges... so I have a scarf that I only use for exercising to absorb the sweat, and I tie it around my edges..... If you don't want to cowash and worried about the sweat in your hair, I would suggest lightly dampening a wash cloth, cover your index finger with it, and then press on your scalp. This will gently rinse the scalp and open the pores on your scalp... But if you feel the need to still cowash, just embrace the fuzz! Maybe pin it up and put accessories in it so you can still look stylish even if you have a little fuzz with your twists!

If anyone can answer this question:

Most of you stated that you wash your hair while it is in twists... I KNOW my hair will unravel if I even try it.... can any of you post pictures of your twists AFTER you've washed and DC'd your hair while it was still in twists??? Just so I can see what to expect...

Thanks!

Hello All... (again.. lol )

I just wanted to share with you everything I am doing for overall hair health during this Twist for Growth Challenge:

I am currently taking Prenatal Vitamins with DHA (I am NOT pregnant). I have spoken with my doctor before taking it, so just make sure its okay for you to take them first. Prenatal vitamins are the same as regular vitamins (some people think that prenatal vitamins contain hormones or something... they DONT). Prenatal vitamins just have higher levels of essential vitamins, folate, extra iron, and is designed for optimal absorption into the body.. I have been taking prenatal vitamins for a LONG time now, and it has really helped the condition of my hair and nails, and I have a lot more energy too...

I DC with Aubrey Organics Honesuckle Rose- its very moisturizing and the protein really improves the strength of my hair

I am trimming regularly... I tend to get a little too scissor happy  (trimming one piece of hair ends up with me cutting my entire head lol).. so I do trim, but I'm trying to cut back on it so I can have more length.

I'm drinking more water and eating more fruits and veggies.

To do my twists, I use Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding. I know the ingredients aren't fantastic, but they give me the BEST twists and twist outs, they stay shiny and don't frizz up as much at all. If you do use Miss Jessie's you may want to use a sulfate containing shampoo (some people think this is probably vodoo) but you need to make sure you've gotten rid of any build up and cones out of your hair from the product. To me sulfate shampoos are fine as long as you use them occasionally. Since I am going to be washing my hair every 2-3 weeks, I am definately using a sulfate-containing shampoo to get rid of all of the build up that my hair has acquired during those weeks. (conditioners don't fully unclog scalp pores, so if you're wearing twists for a while, I would suggest using shampoos when you finally wash)... (For REAL clarifying I use Herbal Essences Come Clean once a month, but for regular washes I use the Cream of Nature (the new one that has sulfates))

These are my regimens and what works for me, so I know what I do may not work for everyone...

please share any tips or regimens and eating habits that you are doing for optimal hair health during this challenge!

Hey...Kudos to you for starting this challenge. I ended the last one in April 2010 (twisting for growth #4). Much success to you in this challenge. I definitely attribute all of my hair growth and retention to my wearing twist.
