My Stylist vs LHCF: Confused

So...as you may or may not know, I'm struggling with dryness right now...and picking staple products. I ended up going to my stylist (that I trust and love) today. This woman brought my hair from dang near mattilation and breakage on sight to happy healthy naps right now. So she says the products that i have so far are pretty much junk! She suggests I use the paul mitchell color protect daily shampoo/conditioner (which i already had in the closet) and milani leave ins. Yes my hair did thrive on these things when I was relaxed but I guess im just confused at why none of the things that seem to be staples for pretty much everyone (the conditioners and oils) seem to not have any effect on my hair. Could this be possible or just my imagination? Sorry, I guess this is just a rant mostly. Any thoughts? Anything is appreciated. Thanks and hugs in advance! :yep: at least Im moisturized for now lol...

I think if you have some things to work for you, go with it. You can't build your staples off of what works for others. Even what seems to work for others only works for a percentage. There are still a big percentage it doesn't work for.

It's not your imagination. Give the products she suggested a try and then make changes from there.

Everyone's hair is different. Use what works for your hair. Your follicles won't lie. If a product works for you, they will let you know.

I think a lot of people (I used to do this myself) force themselves to use certain products because they are "trendy" & everybody seems to like them.

Case in point: A lot of ppl rave about Eco Styler Olive Oil gel. My hair hates it... But I used most of a huge jumbo sized container (and that takes a looong time lol) before I finally acknowledged the fact that I shouldn't be using it b/c it doesn't really work for me.

Congrats on finding a couple products that work for you! :yep: It's hard to find the best products for your hair. I have a few staple products, but I'm still going through trial & error trying to find them all.

I think since you recently bc'ed you should take your time finding the right products try maybe one or two a month while you're searching use what your stylist suggested if it still works on your hair as a natural. As for products people rave about not working for you... You may still have scab hair I know I did for a year or two after bcing.
Also diff strokes for diff folks. Many people love castor oil & suave naturals they both make me shed something horrible meanwhile vo5 kiwi lime and wheatgerm oil are always on my side. Find what your hair likes not what you want it to like, ya know?

when you become natural it can take a very long time to find staples so be patient and don't jump on every bandwagon when a new product comes out.....many on the board have said that their relaxed vs natural hair has not liked the same products. list the products in your reggie so that we can pinpoint what needs tweaking.

those did not work for my hair when I was natural. I also dont use them as a relaxed head.

Find what works for you.

IMO it takes a person a little over a year to solidify the regimen, products included

cosigning, just to say it took me all of 2009 to compile a working regimen and I just think I found 2 staple shampoos which was oddly the last piece of the puzzle. So it is a process.

I just found my staple shampoos in the last 2 months after over a year of searching.

Over the past year I have purchased all types of things. I've used some and thrown out some. I would say that 80% didn't work for my hair at all. And 10% were just ok. I spent the last year paying attention to my hair and eliminating, eliminating, elimination. So this month is 1 year and my staples are 1 mud wash, AVG and sunflower oil and unpetroleum jelly. None of which are the products I thought would be my staples.

Maybe your stylist is right. The products you have may not work for you. Or maybe you're using them wrong. But it takes a lot of time and a bit of money and patience to find why works for you. For example, I tried Herbal Essences Hello Hydration every way I could. It doesn't work for me. And Nexxus Humectress was just ok. Is your stylist familiar with cowashing and all that fun stuff? My mom doesn't understand why I have a 33 oz jug of tresemme condish with a pump lol. And she thinks cowashing is odd. But the proof is currently making it's way down my back so hey. Do you. Unless it results in more tangles. Then by all means stop :)

Well to be fair, on that product I would agree with her, it's not enough of a heavyweight conditioner for me, probably fine for co-washing though.

I know you trust her, but just out of curiosity...Is she (or the salon) selling the products that she claims will work?

My regimen is kinda all over the place, however I have been shampooing and DC together once a week. I like using the bee mine rhassoul clay clarifying bar and I had been using aubrey gpb condish. for cowashes i was using either aussie moist (ok) hello hydration (ok) or the v05 (meh) and cowashes happen like 2 times a week. she also made the statement "how is water hydrating your hair? all that water is probably drying it out" which kinda makes sense but also goes against everything i thought about natural hair "loving" water...

honestly i havent felt like my hair has "loved" anything but the salon dc since my friggin big chop lol. it's like ever since i moved from louisiana to georgia my hair just hates it. dry dry dry. i know it's probably the difference in atmosphere and i think the water too. i guess i just have to find my way out here.

lol yes they are. it's smart style (walmart) but she is leaving that job at the end of the month...

Well there is your answer right there. She wants you to use those products because she possibly is going to receive comission for selling those products or maybe she is pushed to sell them to you.

Hate to say it, but I know it's true. Plus, if she makes you doubt the purchases you make, she can make you doubt your own ability to truly take care of your hair, making you dependent on her for all your styling needs and increasing her cash flow. If she's leaving that salon, chances are she will still need to keep a clientele for wherever she goes.

Just a thought, most places in Louisiana have soft water.
If you've moved to a place with hard water, that may affect your hair.

I love how the OP actually says the stylist she's using has helped bring back the health of her hair and is giving her good advice and You'all still jump on the stylist hate bandwagon... smh

I work for a salon that encourages us to sell products, however I hardly ever make commission because I'm always giving my clients product suggestions for stuff we don't sell. Whenever I do sell a product, it's because I truly believe that it will improve my clients hair.

Your stylist probably does get commission for selling you products...but she probably also has a lot of product knowledge on what she selling you, and really believes that they will benefit your hair.

Hmm... But she also said they worked for her hair, so the stylist probably knows what she is doing/saying.

Anybody who just blindly says "your products are all crap" without seeing how your hair is reacting to said product after you apply it to is full of it. Sorry. The OP said she uses Hello Hydration for crying out loud! :lachen:What makes a product work for someone is based on if the ingredients are compatible with what your hair needs. If they are working for her, then why does she need to use salon brand products? It sounds like that is the only reason why she is pushing these products-because of the name. High end products=good and the drugstore/lesser name brands=junk. Don't fall for the okie doke OP.

You can determine if your hair will probably like a product just by skimming the ingredient lists. If your hair likes the PM product and the first five ingredients are water/olive oil/cetearyl alcohol/glycerin/lanolin (for example), then your hair may like another product with this combo as well and for half the price.

The bolded reminds me of the times I was told that my hair would grow mold and fall out from being wetted or washed too frequently.

I know your stylist means well, but that statement alone reveals the limits of her knowledge of healthy hair care practices. I suspect that she still subscribes to the myth that Black hair should severely restrict its interaction with water, or suffer dire consequences.

IMO, the best moisturizer you can ever use is water because, similar to the body, the hair NEEDS water to survive and thrive. Still, as with all things, carefully consider all options and do what you think is best.

I totally agree with the bolded, I very rarely recommend major salon brands to my clients, unless it's something that I KNOW will work for them. I also ask how much they're willing to spend and work from there with regard to prescribing.

If your hair is highly porous and you don't seal properly, no matter how much water you put on it you will have dry hair.

Hello Hydration is garbage. That was my experience with it. It smells awesome though, I really wanted to like it.

Hmm...

Honestly I noticed mizani products work great at first, but leave HORRIBLE build up... It may feel great now...but it doesn't really address the issue of moisture loss

My TWA felt like crap in the beginning but it was growing like a weed with NO breakage so...*shrug I just kept with my Vo5 co-washes and It took me awhile to find a staple conditioner. Bagging and sealing(read up on it:yep:) really made the difference!

NIN4eva I don't think we have stylist hate here, just really really tired of the conflicting information, my knowledge is the end all do all attitude. Water is drying her hair out?! Is she serious??? SO many of us have saved our damaged pitiful hair from stylists and grew it to long lengths... coincident? Methinks not! So I think its safe to say the chilly stylists vibe is justified... Prove me wrong...until then #teamDIY

ETA: HH is total crap!! So is most of HE nowadays...
