So he's just going to twist your roots after the wash? What products is he planning to use?

He started my locs with a spray in solution...no gel or anything. I don't know if he'll use that again or some rakish wahoos tight hold. I've seen him use that on others.

He has a youtube channel. Damianjw84

I have my locs in the bantu knots now. I two strand twisted them this time instead of braiding them before doing the knots, so hopefully I will have a more curly look rather than crinkly. My head still hurts though. I will try to post a picture when I take them down after my nap.

Awesome idea. Oh, here's another thing u can do-set your locs on perm rods (depending on how long they are, mine are pretty short so I use the small ones) I'm sure if u set them over night or let them dry under a bonnet dryer you'll get a nice tight curl.

:yep: ITA I use cold perm rods and flexirods to curl my locs and I love it.

Here's a pic of my babies freshly washed, conditioned and dried. I  them like that!
I've got a mini Afro right now underneath it all. I almost don't want to retwist them!

Sister locker checking in. Regarding curls, my hair Neva holds curls well. Tonight & as I type my hair is in a combo of chunky 2STs and Bantus. I misted my hair w/a moisturizing spray & rubbed about a quarter size of setting lotion on then. To top it off I'm sitting under a heatcap for 30min. I pray that to tomorrow the results hold all day

Ok, so I know I said I would post a picture after my nap of my bantu knot out and I didn't (I'm sowwy :) ), work and school keeps me tired so....nuff said. Anyway, I washed my hair today with a clarifying shampoo and then put some egg, evoo, and peppermint oil in my hair for about thirty minutes. I am feeling myself tonight, lol.

I love this thread

My boyfriend plans on locking his hair tomorrow and the girl who's starting them for him was really vague with starting supplies..

Is there a specific shampoo he should be washing his scalp with? And should he wash his hair less in the beginning to prevent unraveling? He's type 4b/fine

i think it's important to start locs using a method that you can wash regularly from the get go. it will be different for different hair types. i have 3c hair and i started with braids because i knew that anything other way would come aloose in the beginning when i wash it.

some loctitians will try to say not to wash it, but i don't believe in that. i believe that you should wash your scalp with water (at least) every week or two, at least. more hygienic and all of that..

1. Read my signature, share it with him, and keep it in mind during the entire locking process.

2. To prevent unraveling I'd recommend that he wear either a nylon cap, or a snug fitting nylon net..(for some reason the exact word escapes me). Then Saturate, soak, and squeeze the shampoo through is locs and the cap. Use the fingers to gently scracth (massage) the scalp. Then rinse, thoroughtly. Think of the way you would wash fine washables, and translate that to "man-ease" for him.

3. To clean the scalp between hair washing, Sebreeze on a baby washcloth works wonders.

IOTH.

Reference: I do sisterlocks and this is the same advice I give my clients that don't like "bunching and banding".

My friend just called and asked if I would be able to take my locs down for her wedding because she wants me to wear a fro...:look: negative:ohwell:. I guess now I will have to show her some cute updo's and stuff so she can see how nice locs look when dolled up.

 I'm sorry but a friend who knows what it takes to have locs wouldn't say that. You might want to explain what it means to you and how much time and care you put into your locs. That's wrong of her to ask you to take down your locs for ONE DAY! :nono: I'm getting married too and I would feel bad saying this to my bridesmaids.
She would've lost me right then & there. :look: Hopefully she will listen to you and understand that your hair will not be the highlight of the day.

Thanks for your response. I just simply said, "no, they can't be removed" and left it at that and she said okay. Short and sweet conversation . I am just wondering if she was playing dumb or just really didn't know, because the way she asked was like she wasn't sure if that was an option or not. When I first started my braidlocs we had conversations about locs so I would think she would realize that they are not easily removed. By the time she gets married I'll be well over a year in to this so it would be even more unlikely then. Since I very firmly said no, hopefully it won't come up again.

I have another quick question. My boyfriend had comb coils done to start his locks a couple of days ago, however he only had thirty dreads in his head so later that night I splitted a few in half and re-twisted them to make 50 . I didn't wash out the old product I just wet it a little, and retwisted..

Now he feels like it will still be too sparse so he wants me to make the parts even smaller so he'll have 75-80 dreads.

Does anyone know if it'll be a problem to keep layering on the products? Or that's fine as long as its still holding in the coil?

My first thought was to ask you if you would recommend that approach for corrective makeup applications

But I I realized that would be "harsh". So, no I wouldn't recommend that approach, wash the hair and start over. If he's that particular then create ponytails/puffs untill he has a parting plan/grid he's comfortable with.

definitely wash and start over.

also, keep in mind that locs start out small and swell and thicken up over time. usually, they end up being the size of whatever size the section is at the scalp. so if there are pencil size sections at the scalp, then eventually there will be locs about pencil size in diameter. yeah, 30 sounds very scarce and would probably end up pretty big. i have pretty big locs, and I have 40. his would have been even bigger than mine.

2. To prevent unraveling I'd recommend that he wear either a nylon cap, or a snug fitting nylon net..(for some reason the exact word escapes me).

It's called a weaving net. That's what I used when I first started my locs. I would put the weaving cap over my locs, dilute some shampoo, and pour it over my entire head. Then, using the pads of my fingers, i would try to get as close to the scalp as possible and scrub inbetween my locs. Afterwards I'd rinse my locs under water a few times till I saw certain there were no more suds.

Once the locs have anchored he can stop using the net/cap. The time it takes varies for different people, but for me it only took a month for my hair to begin matting and swelling to the point where they no longer threatened to come loose once water hit them.

Just make sure u don't wash his hair with a creamy shampoo, it may cause build up and do more harm than good.

Loc thread YAY!!! I'm 6 months into my loc journey, started them on July 21, 2011 when it was 105 degrees outside. I took off my full lace wig, two strand twisted my then APL hair and haven't looked back since!!

Thanks for all of the advice! I washed and retwisted his hair smaller. But he plays basketball daily and sweats heavily from his scalp... Should he at least co wash after basketball every day? With a nylon cap on?

Victoria44 It's too early in the game for him to use conditioner on his head. He can rinse his head, if he wants. Conditioning may make the locing process take longer because it needs time to mature and matt.

ITA with DanceOnTheSkylines. :yep: Using conditioner would make his hair slip and prevent matting.

Ok, so I have a confession. My locs are uneven and it's driving me crazy.

but i want them long. but i want them even. if i cut them into a shape, it will lengthen the time it takes for me to get my length goals. But if i don't cut it, I don't now how happy i will be with locs in several different lengths in random places.

i wonder if i will be more happy with it's uneveness if once i start to get closer to my length goal?

or, what if i get close to my length goal and discover that i'm still very unhappy with the uneveness, and then I'll still end up having to cut?

What should I do? I tend to overthink these things.
