Am I the only one to consider the validity of the study? Maybe there are other risk factors associated. Those who get their hair relaxed on a regular basis may live in urban cities where pollution is higher or they may get less exercise. I havent been convinced that all variables were considered in this study...

Hun, there are a drastic number of black women that aren't able to have their own children. Maybe some just don't see them because a lot of them are adopting, becoming foster parents or just raising someone else's children.

I don't know about the touch ups every four weeks though because when I was relaxed, I definitely didn't get them that often.

if relaxed hair truly caused reproductive health problems then it wouldnt be now that people would notice a supposedly correlation in relaxed hair and reproductive health, they wouldve noticed it way back when. and most relaxed heads i know get touch ups every 4-6wks right when theres like 2cm of new growth they run to the salon which is why a lot of relaxed heads i see look tore up.
but either way i was just stating my opinion some of yall are too sensitive on this board i mean ive seen some relaxed heads look better than natural heads and the same in reverse.where i live my hair looks better than most chicks whether natural or relaxed shoot i even have the white chicks nervous, by the end of the summer maybe i'll have the asians nervous too lol

No you are not, there are several responses here questioning the validity or at least calling for more extensive research.

That's all good, but it's not even about who's hair looks better, but as long as that works for you... ;)

It's not just relaxers. Those of you that shampoo, co-wash, "pop the curls", etc aren't safe.

Chemicals that are found in common black hair care products like shampoos, conditioners, detanglers, and of course, relaxers. The chemicals are referred to as Estrogen and Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, or EDC’s. EDC’s are believed to be linked to reproductive effects and birth defects, breast cancer, heart disease, cognitive disorders, premature puberty and altered immune function (so far). The article listed a few of these EDC’s:

Sodium Hydroxide (Lye relaxers)

Calcium Hydroxide (No Lye relaxers)

Diazolidinyl

Urea

DMDM

Hydantoin

Propylene Glycol

Diethanolamine

Monoethanolamine

Triethanolamine

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Hydroquinone Colorants and Synthetic Colors labeled as D&C and/or FD&C

Check your ingredients. Those that relax may do so once every two months. Many of these products are used daily! Just trying to be "helpful".

Very good point. Since reading the forums I have learned more and more about different ingredients in hair and skin products. As a result, I have been transitioning to basic natural ingredients to use on my hair. It works for me. However, if people are not having any problems using products with these ingredients, I can understand that they would continue to use them. I look at it like prescription medication. Some will experience side affects and can't take them. Some will be healed by them. Depends on the person and situation.

This is true for those that choose to relax as well, no? Many are not having any problems with their hair relaxing products.

That is so true and lye is in handmade soap too. Just an Fyi.

i'm not relaxed but i'm not a natural nazi either. putting anything on our bodies with chemicals present a huge health risk. i transitioned way before this forum came about. when you think about lye is in drain cleaner.

I don't have any products with any of those ingredients. Even though you are missing some ingredients like parabens, edta's etc your list is actually helpful topeople whodon't read labels....

MY POINT: Relaxed or natural..please read labels.

Yes and I have stated this many times in this thread. I don't have a problem with relaxers. I strongly feel that the natural hair movement should be more about women permed, natural or other being free to choose how they want to care for their hair without discrimination and/or backlash from others.

 I dont really care what Becky,Ming Lee and Selena are doing. Im not of them. I however am concerned with shady products aimed to women who look like me.

So what you're saying is...you're somewhat prejudiced? We have some Spanish ladies, possibly half Chinese, and white ladies that are members of this board, you know? They can very well be offended by this statement. Afterall, they are all humans like we are and deserving of the same measure of concern. Just sayin...
