Winter Hair Care Tips :)

Hi All:)

I thought we could devote a thread to ways we can best manage our hair in these cold, dry months.

My tips:

1. After washing and shampooing, fill your bathtub with hot water and close the door. The hot water will create a "sauna-like" atmosphere and detangling will be a breeze.;) I tried this again this week and it was like being in a warm, humid environment. The oils and leave-ins just soaked right in.

2. Wear a silk or satin scarf under your hats for extra hair protection.

Great thread!!!! K, let's see:

1) All u overnight-baggy'ers and/or air-dryers: Make sure you dont go outside with your hair wet or too damp, for a prolonged period of time. Your hair can freeze and BREAK off if its cold enough!

2) If you dont already, give yourself a hot oil treatment at least once a month. This will put some of the moisture back in ure hair that the cold, dry winter months rob from us.

Take heat protection a step further and wear silk on your hair indoors and in the car since artificial heaters stress your hair too.

Thanks so much! - - I was trying to figure out why my baggy method was not working as well.

Kini,

How do you do your hot oils? Do you do it as a pree-poo? Do you do it on wet or dry hair and which oil do you use?

ya know, i never believed this until the other day... it was so cold that when my breath was blowing in my face, i had little icicles hanging off my eyelashes!

but back to the tips...

keep drinking plenty of water! we tend to do this in warmer weather when the heat makes us thirsty, but slack off in the winter. your hair and skin will thank you!

I deep condition twice per week.

I also have a humidifier. It is a cool mist humidifier.

Satin scarfs and watch out for those wool coats, sweaters, and hats for the ladies that wear their hair down.

The guy at the store says that it doesn't make a difference if the humidifier mist is cool or warm because once it hits the air it all turns into room temperature humidity. This is great for the dry winter weather.

I always wondered if there was a diff between cool and warm air humid.

My tip:
I found that being a little more heavy handed than I would in the summer w/ my moisturizers has been helping a ton! Also---stepping up my sealing.

YEAH I didn't know about sealing until LHCF and I love it! It actually helps me wash weekly as opposed to bi weekly

This is the truth. With the increase in drying heaters everywhere we go, everything dries out. I have this problem every winter and this time my increased water intake is helping somewhat. I find these times much harsher than summer weather. I have had to up the moisture that I apply to my ends (and all over!!) because they were trying to return to my pre-LHCF days.

how do you do this, lipglasshoney? do you drape the scarf over your shoulders? tuck it into the neck of your coat? i keep trying to use my scarf with my coat (because my nape is a mess) and it doesn't work...:perplexed

I found that braidouts are working so well for my hair. Before, I would just wear a TWA, but someone said that braids outs will help your hair retain moisture, and it does!! I just braid about 8 plaits every night and then unravel my hair in the morning. I have had to DECREASE the amount of oils and moisture I am putting in my hair because it is keeping in everything so well. I highly recommend this, especially for naturals

I bought a silk hat [http://www.royalsilkusa.com/detail_cap_main.html] and attached it to the inside of my cotton hat, since I couldn't find a good silk lined hat (the Royal Silk is so nice that I actually slept in it once when I forgot my satin headscarf on vacation. May hair actually looked nice the next day.).

I also pin up my hair and put it all under the hat so nothing touches my wool coats.
