Sure. This was a photo of the first time she fully straightened my hair.

It no longer takes us as long, and we've both agreed for maintenance I should blow dry my hair with a comb attachment periodically and preferably before coming in; it's the only way I avoid spider-webby hair and long detangling sessions at the salon.

I remember us having a similar hair- hard or wiry texture? I plan to experiment w/doing a blowdry periodically to remove all shed hair. It's the only thing that gets all the hair. I'm exclusively finger detangling for past 18mo-- and good results, but after a recent self assessment- I'll try this periodic comb option (every other month I guess). Glad I ran into your post on blow dryer detangling- right on time.

I can't imagine paying this kind of money with YouTube on the scene. There's girls on YT flat ironing their hair with top quality results and complete reversion. I'm in the process of mastering my technique for MY hair from what I learned on the tube.

....shoot you can learn ANYTHING on YT. I just made my first wig ever from watching YT!

Who do you like on YT? I'm liking sistawithrealhair, teaundra, and grahamsnaturalcurls, but I haven't tried it yet. I'm interested in who else is very handy w/ a flat iron too.

Reneice always did a great job by you gurl...you've been one of her best testimonials over the years! So do you use one of the good old Willie Morrow pic attachments? They're almost impossible to find nowadays, but I can't imagine life w/o one.

Why I never seen you at a meetup? You seem like you'd be a riot! Or wait, did I (you know I'm mwedzi, right?)? What's your real name (in a PM)? Maybe I can drop your name or something next time I'm in the chair, lol.
WHUT? I didn't know this was you! I been wondering where Mwedzi been and you been here all along.

I feel some kinda way. I guess Nyeredzi mean Crackers can't find me.

Not trying to be funny or anything but what is so special about reneice and her method? I know nothing about her.

I'm just honestly trying to wrap my head around this whole concept , waiting list a year long, prices doubling, etc.

In my observations (not having gone myself), Reneice has gotten great results using various approaches w/ Afro textured hair in both it's natural and relaxed states...and that includes the Andre textures from 2-4. What impresses me most about her is that she can get Type 4b-c straight w/o excessive heat, tension, or damage. I've rarely seen a salon/professional get such consistent results on these hair types, esp Dominican salons. Those seem to do best w/ Andre type 3s up to maybe 4a, but Reneice is consistent w/ 4-c+.

I didn't know about grahamsnaturalcurls so I'll check it out. I like the others you mentioned. I also like these for flat ironing:

Ahfro Baang
TressedforSuccess

Wow, that's very pricey for a flatiron. :nono:

Last time I was there in Feb. the new weave prices for the junior stylists were $200, up from $140. I didn't really mind because the weave lasts me for a couple of months plus $140 is pretty cheap for a full weave, I knew the prices would increase at some point.

I've been on the wait list for over a year... guess I won't be going.

Reneice does beautiful hair tho, all of her staff actually. I loved what they did to @nyeredzi @Letta and a few others

You'll eventually get on the schedule. I was on the wait list for like 3 or 4 years and then finally got on the books a couple of years ago. I've been going ever since. :yep:

The only thing I don't like is that when they do open the books up, there is hardly any notice. I got an email on a Thursday saying that I had to register on Friday if I wanted to come to the consultation on Sunday. Thank goodness I was in town and available!

I have no dog in the fight since I live nowhere near her salon but $100 for a flat iron is quite shocking. My mind keep going back to the days where I would wash, deep condition and blow dry my hair and go to the salon down the street and get my hair pressed, flat iron and cured for $15 and eventually $20. :lachen:

Aww thanks!

In terms of pricing, I have been to a number of other stylists and end up paying close to that after tips and the like anyway. Reniece knows her ish and I truly trust her with my hair. It was honestly well worth the money and she gave me some really good tips on how to best use my rx shampoo & scalp treatments to avoid drying out my hair and stripping it of its natural oils.

Here are my before and after. The before is after she washed and conditioned it and then just blew it dry. The after is after she sprinkled crack on my hair, waved her magic wand & straight up fairy god mother'ed my ish.

I was on the wait list less than 3 months. I got the open house email and got a slot. Pure luck. I'm not surprised people waited a long time because those slots for open house are so competitive.

Lovely! Her blow dry is better than my flat iron fail. :ohwell:

Would you happen to remember which products she used to blow dry and flat iron your hair?

Okay, Jcoily  I mean, they both end in "edzi". I renamed myself after the baby and rose from the ashes like a phoenix, like a really tired one who no longer gets enough sleep, or maybe like one with a broken wing, or like a pigeon, a lame pigeon. :/ And I've been here ever since, watching LHCF do what it do, laughing at everyone's (and your) posts, like the one you just posted about how Denzel should have known that the internet was real and ready.

Yeah, our hair was similar, a least in it being type 4 and super prone to tangling and long detangling sessions. Mine isn't super wiry. If things are working out with your hair, I don't want to be responsible for causing damage! Finger detangling is great if you can manage it. I just can't because it takes soooooo long, unless I have kept my hair in braids without ever taking it out.

I only straighten my hair twice a year, and I've seen flat iron prices close to that in most cities I've lived in, so I'm not shocked. I'm moving to Md so I'm thinking of putting my name on her waiting list. I've encountered A LOT of stylists who say they use healthy hair care practices, but they don't. When I tell them how I take care of my hair, they start joking about those of us who use "kitchen products", and then they get frustrated with all my instructions, but after they are finished with my hair they admire how healthy it is....then ask me to post pics of my hair on IG so they can claim that they are responsible for it. Reneice is the only stylist I've heard consistent positive feedback about. That's a shame.

I can see both sides of the argument. That is a significant increase. The going rate here at most black owned salons charge similarly -- Roughly $110 for a wash/flat iron/trim.

Idk, for a natural with dense, long, thick hair ... I could see the price being about right. On Saturday I went for a wash, dc w/steam, and light trim... that cost me $100. I feel safe with this stylist and my little bit of hair is light work for her to deal with. I can see stylists charging differently on the amount of hair a client has. My stylist has said my hair is easy to deal with. It's not long, it's certainly not dense, it straightens with one swipe. The naturals with beautiful heads of luscious thick and dense hair -- I could see them getting charged more. Their hair will take more time to do. I was light weight disappointed when I realized how fine my hair is when it's straight lol.. ehh, at least it's healthy. My point is, I could see a stylist charging on the amount of hair a client has and how long it takes to do.

I'll pay it and fly from Atlanta to get it done. I go to her a few times a year. She's the only one that does my hair.
I rather do that then allow someone else to do it resulting in my name changing to edge-ah-dina. A chic with no edges..LOL! I pay for quality. Plus she's awesome. She's not only my stylist but a true friend! I love Niecey. She cares about you and the health of your hair. I can say I've ever met a stylist like her.

Ive worked in business 20 years.

A normal annual cost of living increase for most industries from construction to wall street is an annual increase of 2 - 5% (minus annual bonuses for performance to individual workers). That increase goes to workers' pay and ultimately is offset by an equal 2 -5% increase on the customer.

This 30 some% (?) (my math sucks) overnight is a bit much. Thats ridiculous.
@DarkJoy - it would be around 53.85% increase!!! :perplexed:

Yes, her salon's prices are expensive, but she's worth every penny, imo.

For $100, I get a shampoo, whatever type of DC treatments my hair needs at the time, a trim/dusting, a blow dry/flat iron, my own 2-3 hour time slot (she doesn't double-book), privacy while my hair is being styled (each stylist has their own little room), professional service, and great results. I don't think there's anything exploitative about that. If you let her know that you can't afford/don't want to come in regularly, she'll be more than happy to tell you how to achieve the same results at home (as she's done with me several times).

For me, I don't feel like I'm just paying for a nice hairstyle. I'm paying for the experience as a whole.

Getting your hair done at a salon is a luxury, and like most things in life (food, clothes, cars, etc.), you have to pay good money if you want good quality. :yep:

For the record, I only go to her about 5-6 times a year. Any other time I'll do my hair myself.

Pay for convenience. I'm a fan of that for lots of things. Sometimes you just don't want to do it yourself. And some of those times you'll pay for a cheap person lol or a top notch person depending on what it is.

My arms get tired doing my light blow out on my hair after washing. I never straighten it but I'd need to build up some stamina or do it another day lol. Or get with a friend and we'd do each other's hair.

Last night, I watched Reniece video showcasing her and Tamika Bell's (dontspeakdefeat) customers healthy hair. I'm like "yo...she's worth it". I wouldn't go bi-weekly but definitely bi-monthly.

I just looked at Tamika Bell's (dontspeakdefeat) website. Do you have to get a weave to have her as a stylist? I want to transition with the help of professional but looking more towards straightening my own hair, not adding extensions. However, her work is beautiful.
