I'm giving them a try for 6 months ( unless my hair tells me otherwise) to see what it does.

I've ordered some oil, a leave in and a DC from Lakshmi's Cupboard and now I'm eying some things from Afroveda ( not directly from her though...thanks for the warnings ladies), and from
AshaAndMielBodyCare : https://www.etsy.com/shop/AshaAndMielBodyCare

What's been your experience?

Thanks!

I got carts full of stuff Ayurvedic stuff on etsy. Im going to get it all probably tomorrow. Here goes nothing! It will all be on the swap boards if it don't work :)

This is my regimen and recommendations in a nutshell. Overall Ayurvedic products are inexpensive and easy to incorporate in my regimen.
I get my supplies from my local Indian store, myhenna.us, amazon.com, vitacost.com or iherb.com,

1. PREPOO/DETANGLE - Add oil to dry hair or mix with slippery rinse-out conditioner. Leave on overnight (preferred) but 30 minute using heat also works.
All of these oils are petroleum and mineral oil free.
SoulTanicals Power to the PrePoo (expensive but smells like honey)
Neem oil (leave in for 10 minutes; Best oil for scalp irritation and flakes)
Sesa Hair Oil
Auromere Pre-Shampoo Treatment
Dabur Vatika Naturals Enriched Coconut or Enriched Coconut with Hibiscus oils
Dabur Shankhapushpi Tail
Ramtirth Brahmi Oil
Baidyanath Mahabhringraj Tel Hair Oil
Baba Ramdev’s Divya Kesh Taila
Godrej Anoop hair oil
Ramkrishna Vidyut Pure Maka Mahabhringaraj Hair Oil (Best value; comes in a 16.9 oz bottle)

Heads Up - Traditional Ayurvedic oils typically have an earthy, grassy or smoky (like JBCO) scent due to the herbs.
Neem oil is not for the faint of heart. It smells like garlic and rotten onions.
SoulTanicals Power to the PrePoo smells the best; like honey.
Vatika Enriched Coconut smells like lemon and hay. The Hibiscus version smells like Starbucks Passion Tea, lemon and hay.
Sesa Hair oil smells like clover.
Auromere Pre-Shampoo Treatment smells like roasted walnuts.
Dabur Shankhapushpi Tail, Ramtirth Brahmi and Ramkrishna Vidyut Pure Maka Mahabhringaraj Hair Oil have the lightest scents.
The rest smell like raw shea butter or black castor oil.

2. CLEANSE- Use an Ayurvedic shampoo bar or add tea to clay or conditioner. I alternate cleansing methods to avoid build-up. Always prepoo before cleansing.
Auromere soap bars
Bobeam Naturals Products Cheris Hibiscus Moisturizing Shampoo Bar, Coco Honey & Amla Conditioning Shampoo Bar or Vashti Ayurvedic Shampoo Bar
SoulTanicals SoulVedic Shampoo Bar
Organics South TheraNeem bars and liquid soap

(If you're not about that DIY/Mixtress life skip this step)
Make a tea with the following and add to clay or lightweight rinse-out conditioner to cleanse
Meera Herbal Hairwash Powder
Powders, usually Hesh or Banyan Botanicals (gulab/rose, sandalwood, shikaikai, soapnut/aritha. amla, brahmi/gotu kola, mahabringaraj, neem, Tulsi/Holy Basil, kapoor kachli/spiked ginger lily, TriPhala)

3. CONDITION add 1-2 TBS of oil to conditioner or hair masque (preferably protein-free) of your choice and condition for 30 minutes using heat
Heads Up - avoid the use of heavy protein conditioners, treatments and acids (Lemon, ACV, Citric Acid, Aloe) when using Ayurvedic products.
Dabur Vatika Naturals Deep Conditioning Hair Masks or Hot Oil Treatment

4. MOISTURIZE & STYLE
AfroVeda Buttercreams (Please only purchase from Hattache or Pampered & Twisted)

5. SCALP CARE & SEALING - These oils can be left on the hair & scalp. The herbal scents are easily covered up by my leave-ins and stylers.
Dabur Shankhapushpi Tail
Baidyanath Mahabhringraj Tel Hair Oil
Baba Ramdev’s Divya Kesh Taila
Godrej Anoop hair oil
Ramkrishna Vidyut Pure Maka Mahabhringaraj Hair Oil

So very informative and thorough :)

What does all of this do for your hair? Obviously something or you wouldn't do it ;)

My hair is low porosity, coarse, kinky (4B, like Marley hair); with high shrinkage and prone to forming locs. Both hair and scalp are dry. I always had to use a harsh shampoo or soap first, then heat all my conditioners and stylers to get them to penetrate. My scalp was always itchy and dry. Now with Ayurvedic products and clay, my hair still shrinks, but rarely tangles. It is also darker and has sheen. Shed hairs slide out. I no longer have to do 50-leven things to moisturize my hair. My scalp is always clear. I can moisturize/seal once and leave it alone until next wash.
A few years ago I had to stop using Ayurvedic products for a year for medical treatment. i lost some hair and my tangling and scalp issues slowly returned during that time.

These are some benefits of the most commonly used Ayurvedic herbs
  • Amla fruit/Indian Gooseberry - high levels of Vitamin C and anti-oxidants, penetrates hair and scalp (conditions), stimulates collagen production, prevents gray hair, darkens existing hair color, removes iron & copper deposits from hard water; treats scalp conditions (dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis)
  • Brahmi/Gotu Kola - Strengthens follicles, reduces shedding, promotes sound sleep and reduces stress; coats hair preventing split ends
  • Lemon - astringent, clarifying on scalp & hair and balances pH of scalp and hair
  • Hibiscus/Jaswand - Stops dandruff and premature graying; antioxidants preserve natural hair color and increases growth; reduces frizz and increases shine
  • Neem oil - antimicrobial, anti-parasitic; anti-inflammatory; keeps scalp clear; treats scalp conditions (dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis)
  • Tulsi/Holy Basil - improves scalp circulation, protects against breakage; stops scalp itching and irritation; treats scalp conditions (dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis)
  • Neelibringahdi/Indigo - Stops hair loss and excessive shedding; prevents split ends; treats itching, and dandruff
  • Henna/Mehendi - penetrates and strengthens the hair, balances scalp pH; treats scalp conditions (dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis); deposits color; acts similar to a protein treatment
  • Chameli/Jasmine - moisturizes hair, provides softness and shine
  • Methi/Fenugreek - stimulates circulation to scalp, stimulates hair growth, softens and detangles hair, stops scalp itch
  • Mahabringaraj/Maka/False Daisy - anti-inflammatory, promotes sound sleep, darkens hair, stimulates growth in balding areas (similar to minoxidil/Rogaine), stops gray hair; anti-parasitic
  • Jatamansi/Spikenard - calming effect; reduces stress; heals damaged follicles; promotes hair growth; coats and lubricates hair
  • Gulab/Rose - anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, mild astringent and toner for scalp and hair; heals skin condtitions (acne, boils, cuts , scrapes, dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis)
  • Khus Khus/Vetiver - moisturizes hair and scalp
  • Shikaikai/Acacia & Aritha/Soapnut - These herbs produce saponins (substances that lather like soap). Both are natural cleansers that also condition. Shikaikai is milder than Aritha.

Thank you for this post! What is your regimen? I'm low porosity 4a/4b, and my hair frequently tries to lock in the back middle.

The night before wash day (Thursday or Friday) I apply Ayurvedic oil to my scalp and hair (prepoo)*. Then I prepare my Ayurvedic rinse and steep overnight. The ratio is 2:1 conditioning/strengthening blend in a moisturizing tea base.
For example this is Nupur 9 Henna + Majabringraj powders in Hibiscus & Rose petal tea base:
View attachment 409159
I also reserve some of the tea base for a leave in.

The following morning I rinse with very warm water and massage my scalp to remove most of the oil. Then cleanse, towel blot, & apply Ayurvedic tea. Next with the tea still in my hair, apply conditioner (usually a mix of different ones + 1- 2Tbs of oil). DC with heat for 20-30 minutes, rinse then towel blot. Finally I apply the reserved tea base and style.

*Forgot to add this step.

Many thanks dear!

Now I'm more tempted to try this but I'm also still my lazy self lol. Do you know if anybody is using the Nupur 9 henna which is supposed to be already premixed with 9 ayurvedic herbs? I mean I could just buy this and add it to the oil and allow it to infuse ;)

YW! That is what I do! A few other ladies at the thread do, too.

Got my Mahabringraj, amla, and aloe powder. I also have my napur.
Ready to start using them in glosses. I think I'll start doing glosses bimonthly, then a full henna when I see how my hair adjusts after maybe 3 gloss treatments.

I'll continue reading the threads about them until then.

I picked up x2 more Ayurvedic Oils to do Winter HOTS. Decided the only "powder" I'll use right now will be Cassia.

I need to do more research on the powders.:bookworm2:

I'll definitely purchase any Pre-Mix. I have Bask & Bloom Brahmi, Hairveda and some Ayurvedic DC'er from APB.

I bought some Kalpi Tone and some other powders yesterday. I can't wait to really get to my ayurveda hair care like I need to just to see how well it works on my hair. looks like I won't be really starting it until all the powders that I ordered, arrive. I ordered quite a few.
