Fall/winter, Braid-out/ Twist-out Routines

Up late/early packing for our trip.

Took down my twists with the results pictured below.

Products:
First use of 22nd Century Natural Woman bar soap and "deep conditioner" (see dedicated thread for reason for the quotation marks).

Method: Cleanse and detangle with poo bar. Rinse out. Twist in and steam in "DC." Let dry overnight. Rinse out whatever percentage of the "DC" you like, leaving some in the hair. Wear twists under SLAP all day the next day, then take them down.

Take down: Unravel by holding one half of the twist at its end, gently pulling down, and letting the twist unravel itself. Pull one unraveled half of the twist apart by splitting the half down the middle. Do the same with the other half. Pick at roots as desired.

Please excuse the tired/serious face. Long day and night.
Very pretty!

Flat twist out...I'm getting "better" at it but it's still not where I want it to be. It's only my third or fourth try though. Still experimenting with products and techniques. I want it more full and fluffy! I pick it out, but then I lose some definition...
I also HATE the shape of my hair. It's growing out from a bob and it's just weird looking. I like the way her hair looks...maybe I can achieve that with more fluffing? I won't be able to get into a salon until Feb.

I think I'm going to try and do one using setting foam because I think using a creamy leave in, plus a curl butter may be too heavy on my hair. I don't really know though. I just want to figure my hair out :(

Also, I think I need to do less hair for each twist when I'm doing flat twists. My parts need to be a bit smaller, and I think I need to grab smaller pieces of hair during the flat twist if that makes sense. Would that help?

How do you section/position your flat twists? Do you do two to the side and two going back or what? I feel like placement if half the battle when it comes to twist/braid outs and I sometimes struggle with that.
This was my first time and I sectioned my hair ear to ear and did 1 twist on each side. With the back half I split it down the middle and did one on each side. I hope that made sense. I would like to try doing one down the middle in the back to avoid the middle part but I need to get better at flat twisting.

I had retwisted my bang in that pic because that section acts a fool. Originally that section had more of a wave to it.

I just retwisted thinking I would freshen things up mid week and omg I will never do this again. First of all it's too much manipulation for me to keep flat twisting and especially on tangled hair. Secondly my hair came out a mess. It's flat and weighed down. I feel bald headed. The initial set was fluffy and full of body. Next time when I refresh I will do single twists. Now I gotta wash my hair later ugh. Fine hair struggles.

Thanks, that makes sense. Yeah I don't know how these girls can do a beautiful flat twist going straight back...I can't even do a braid going straight back. Didn't realize how style challenged I was until I started my HJ lmao

I think it depends. My parts were huge. I think my hair does better in big sections.....I get more body. If I do more sections my hair flattens out and gets stringy. I need to experiment more though. I guess it depends on your hair and what look your going for. I've seen some ladies do a lot of twists and have great results.

My hair is so much like this lady's so I pretty much followed what she did except I didn't pre stretch.

You should've seen me try to do one straight back when I retwisted. It was a mess and took about 5 tries lol. I was so confident going in but man my fingers were all over the place grabbing hair from other twists and everything :lachen:

Oooh...yes ma'am her hair looks :love4::yep::lick: I haven't watched the video yet, but from the thumbnail her hair looks a bit like mine (a longer, healthier version lol). I think you're right about the sections being smaller too. Come to think of it, I did a braid out with smaller braids and it just looked like ramen noodles with no volume. And when I fluffed I all it did was frizz up. I'll try it though and see what happens.
Definitely watching that video when I get off work.

All loced up...
I loved how this braid out turned out! Definitely sticking with this technique. I think I finally found what works for me! And it's holding up well. Much better than the two braid braidout I was doing before with the big waves.
Yes, I love it too! Did you share your new technique somewhere?

Thank you! Yes I followed Brandi's technique....I had posted her video on the first page (post #5). The first time didn't work well for me but I kept trying. I'm really excited that I got it. I'm not sure what I did differently but I sure hope I can keep replicating it.

Here's an updated one she did

I've been doing braid outs a few months now. It's been a lot of trial and error. I still get inconsistent results sometimes. I'm much better at them but I still haven't found my perfect routine. I will say that I'm really impressed with my growth. I leave my braids in for days sometimes do I know that's helping grow my hair a lot. I really miss my wng's though. They hold up longer than my braid outs. Debating on going back to them for awhile and hoping I still get good growth with them. I can usually get a week out of a wng so it's a good low manipulation style for me. I just hate the ssk's.

My twist outs never seem to look right the first day after a fresh wash. They always come out stringy looking so I put it up in a bun then at night I'll finger detangle then do about 6 or so chunky flat twists and it comes out softer, fluffier, and the curl is more a spiral rather than just crinkly looking. I don't do flat twists on wash day because I never get a good flat twist on wet hair. My hair is just cottony and hard for me to manipulate so I do regular two strand twists. And when I twist on dry stretched hair my twists just unravel.

Intersting thread! So guys would a braid out look exactly the same as a twist out? And if not, which method mimics best the natural curl pattern of curly hair? Of course the diameter of the curl should depend on the size of the individual twists/braids.
