Is There Anyone That Did Not Have Long Hair As A Child But Now You Do?

How can you tell the effect sun had on your hair growth?

Just curious. I've never heard this before.
I know it sounds really odd but I noticed it during a period when I traveled to island beach locations for several months. The growth was crazy and my hair was such a pretty color I kept getting asked if I dyed it. I've heard before which is the case for me that ppl have more growth in the summer months. For me it's only if I'm outside a lot during the summer. I I noticed in the summers where I was inside a lot there was very little growth.

Could the increased moisture and humidity in the air during the summer and at the beach also be a factor?

Could be. I've just always equated it to being out in the sun. I noticed it even when not at the beach. Could be a combo of all of it. I know I've read numerous articles on protecting your hair from the sun because it's damaging but I've never had that issue

Cool beans. Whatever the cause, it appears to be working to your benefit.

I find being on the islands to be different than being in North America in the summer. The sun feels less damaging even in your skin, probably because of the humidity and breeze.

I learned pretty early on this journey to keep in mind the location of some of my hair idols. Even within the same province, the weather can vary enough to provide a bit more of an advantage in the hair retention game.

I'm easy going.
Me!! I was bald headed. My mom could hardly put a barrett in. I had very short hair until three years after I graduated high school. Then I started researching "what makes black hair grow. " not knowing that it was growing the whole time and that I wasn't retaining.

If I only had KNOWN I could have had long hair all that time! I could have had butt length hair in junior high along with the spanish, white,Asian and Indian girls! If I had only known that all it took was moisture and protein and protective styling. *Palm to forehead * "could have had a V8"

This is great. I started this thread 9months ago and I was very skeptical then but am slowly coming around that this may be possible for me. The key for me is no relaxer and lots of protein. Fine hair and relaxers I think are a death sentence for hair. Protein is a must for fine hair. My hair has taken off with my transition. Its getting healthier and healthier. I did reach APL for the first time in my entire life but my ends were thin and see through so I cut them off. I havent yet chopped all the relaxed ends but I think that is key. After I do Im becoming more confident my hair will flourish and I can reach a healthy APL

You're on your way to long hair.
Your will achieve it, no doubt.

My niece had only an inch of hair when I took over her hair care away from my sister. Before I took over my niece's hair never seen a conditioner lol. Now she has 7 inches of hair. She is six years old and I started doing her hair in August 2016. I didn't want her to be like how I was at that age. She's gonna have long hair like all the rest of the chicas Lord willing. I use the same exact regimen for both our heads.

ETA: she has 4c fine strands. Very tiny in diameter. And thick hair. I do it in several sections when combing.

You are spot on, fine hair and relaxers ARE a death sentence to the hair.

Thats great!. Your niece is lucky to have you. We have so much more knowledge at our fingertips and better products than our parents had when we were young.

My niece has my same exact 4C fine cotton texture hair and her hair is so short. She is a teen so I give hair tips and try to advise but she like a lot of the teens like weaves and dont take care of whats underneath. She will have to eventually figure things out as she gets older. Its pure laziness right now.

I'm glad that I have my niece while she's too young to mess with her hair! And my sister doesn't want to be bothered, but that's another story. She's the daughter I never had. When it's time to wash her hair she says to me with her little voice "you gonna put conditioner in it?" Awww. She knows the procedure.

I hope your niece starts to really take all of the knowledge that you're giving her! It is tough to be so passionate about hair when no one takes your advice to heart right?

So true about our parents not knowing what most of us now know about black hair care. If they had only known , we would have never coveted other people's hair all these years! Our hair is so gorgeous!

:DBut a lot of our parents did have curl activator. Jheri Curl moisturizers are the truth! Minus the chemical.:gorgeous:

I was a bald headed scally wag all of my life lol. Even years into my natural hair journey, I thought my hair was just trash. It wasn't until I discovered the power of moisturizing, keeping hair stretched, sealing and proper detangling that I began to see my hair thrive. The longest it ever got was APL but it was breaking off from heat damage so I cut the straight ends off and did an undercut in the back. It's growing back nicely

Always had short hair as a kid. Never went past Neck/tip of shoulder (was natural back then). Had my mom stop doing my hair around 12-13, saw my hair grow to MBL natural. Chopped it all off to a pink pixie, and relaxed, four years later I’m a few inches from Classic length. Fully relaxed.

This is a great story. I would habe cried too if someone cut from WSL to APL. Why would someone do that?? My hair is also fine. And I find that the older I'm getting the thinner it's getting. It just really made sense for me to try to go natural. Keeping my fingers crossed that I have great results like some of the women here.

I would have been arrested for assault and battery!
