Thank God I Gave Coconut Oil Another Chance

I can't believe it's taken me 4 years of being natural to find out what works for me and guess what it's water, coconut oil & leave in conditioner spritz something as simple as that.

After all the products I've tried & brought, jerri juicing, baggying, ghe, using less using more product, loc, lco, grease, aloe vera, silicones, shealoe you name it .

Also I love co washing and deep conditioning and will stick with it as it seems to give me moisturized hair. Everything else tho is out kaput lol. Now hopefully I'll see more retention in my hard to grow areas namely my crown & front. I have fine strands too and think coconut oil is just what fine strands need wouldn't you agree

Yay! Happy for you!

My new stylist -- who is amazing -- just told me to eliminate coconut oil from my regimen. I was like  but let me try it since I have a hard time trying new things.

Then I see the video below (a whipped coconut oil prepoo recipe that looks divine) and your post from a fellow fine-haired natural, and I'm so tempted!

Why did they tell you to do that?

She said it blocks water and will thus keep my hair dry, not moisturized.
And do you find this to be true? How do you use your coconut oil? I guess this is why a lot of people pre poo with it to prevent hydgral fatigue is it.

I used to find coconut oil very drying so stopped using it so many times lol & couldn't understand why people raved about it so, then I read that it is very good for trichorrhexis nodosa so gave it yet another chance for my crown breakage & stubborn areas but found making a all in one spritz with it worked way better than layering the products on namely (water leave-in than coconut oil...) dunno why it just does

I hadn't noticed. My favorite masks contain coconut oil and seem to work just fine. But I had the same thought as the bolded.

I guess I thought coconut oil should be great for holding water in, but I don't know.

I've heard it said that coconut oil penetrates the hair cuticle so it's better to seal in the coconut oil along with the water. I tell you it's all so confusing but I guess this is why each one of us has to find a way in how coconut oil works on our own individual hair and not to take on board all the confusing ways others use it or say about it lol... with mine being the all in one homemade spritz

I was using it to Pre-Poo with it, until I found mold in my Jar (wet hands), but found it to be an effective Pre-Poo.:yep:

I also use Fractionated CO in some of my SB-Blends.

I have no issues using CO or products that contain CO.

Glad you found something that works.

You make me wanna pick up another Jar of CO.:drunk:...:look:

Hmmm....that's interesting... I would think that would be more so the case with raw Shea butter...not coconut oil.

I thought coconut oil was one of the most penetrating oils and not really a "sealant"/moisture "blocker".

Hmmmm.....

Yeah. I feel like it can be seen two ways:

1. Way #1: Water is the ultimate moisturizer. If coconut is so penetrating, then how can water get in?

2. Way #2: Water is the only hydrator, but there are MANY substances that moisturize. Coconut oil is thus an EXCELLENT moisturizer, it being such a good penetrator of hair strands.

This, in my opinion, could be where the "big disagreement" lies. I could be wrong, though.

I'm going to test whipped coconut oil atop very wet hair . . . and also a whipped mixture of coconut oil and aloe vera juice to see if either is moisturizing or drying.

I feel I won't know unless I trial it. I never apply moisturizers to bone dry hair, so that's not an issue I need to assess.

Hmmm.... Yea maybe people view it in different ways.

I always say just go w/what works for you lol. I have long since learned to just do what works for me and not what stylists/friends/or even hair boards say.

If it works for me, great! If not, then no biggie, I'll just try something else.

The only thing I will say about coconut oil is that if you are "protein-sensitive", then maybe I would make sure not to use it TOO often. I noticed that when I was just slathering on coconut oil on my hair, I started getting more breakage and my hair felt harder than usual lol  Then again, my hair is fine and soft-textured.

So, sometimes knowing how much to put on your hair can be a good thing to know too.
