I usually don't join challenges but I want to join this one. My hair got matted at the top this summer from a prepoo gone wrong. Now my hair is uneven, like I have a bad haircut. It is also breaking at the ends. It may take two years to correct this so I will be protective styling for most, if not all of 2019 and probably 2020 too.

My plan is have someone cornrow my hair every six weeks in a nice style and small in size so I can wear my hair out without a wig most of the time. I will wear a wig when I'm going somewhere nice. I plan to oil my scalp daily with probably a growth aid and spray my hair three times a week with African Royal braids spray to prevent dryness. It has glycerin so it moisturizing for my hair. I would appreciate a recommendation for another braid spray with glycerin as I don't like the smell of the African Royal spray much.

I’ll just be auditing this class, since I don’t think I’ll be able to post pictures.

Hair Profile: Type 4 (4a & b with “frizz”/breakage); normal-high porosity; natural

Starting Lengths:
Sides & Back (~50%) : 14 & 15 inches
Front/Canopy (~50%): 11 & 12 inches (breakage)

My Normal Routine: Wash Day/2 Weeks
(~1.5-2 Hr):

Gently Detangle (Fingers/Seamless Comb)
Shampoo & Condition in Twists
M&S (LCG/LCB ) -> Air Dry & Stretch
Protective Style for the Week (Next Day)
Aphogee 2 Step Treatments Every 8 Weeks
**Same old, same old**

My Normal Weekly Maintenance:
M&S 1x-2x per week; Spritz as Needed
Satin Bonnet/Scarf Nightly
Refresh PS - end of week
**Same old, same old**

Miscellaneous:
1. Continue to avoid heat, no kanekalon
2. Continue to avoid high manipulation/harsh protective styles like mini twists + braid extensions
3. Continue to limit manipulation (wash day every 2 Weeks, M&S 1-2x a week; refresh style 1x a week)

New Additions/Improvements:
1. Alternate Protective Styles to Avoid Constant Tension/Friction in one spot
2. Deep Condition: 20 min w/ Heat or Steam
(Usually just quickly condition with a rinse out, but want to jumpstart retention in the areas of breakage I have from wearing only low twist buns etc)
3. Satin Scrunchies vs Goodie Hair Ties (and other gentle tools)
4. Keep up Protein Rx Schedule (I slacked off)
5. Trim/Dust in June &/or Dec 2019
6. Seal with Shea Butter Mix
7. BE GENTLE: always spritz hair before
manipulating it; comb & finger detangle as
gently as possible

I'm in!!!

I want WL so bad!!!! It's so doable. I just have to be consistent. If I can retain 7in next year , my hair will be between 15 and 19 in long. My hair has never ever been that long before.

Regimen:
Wash 1x week with water, ACV, or homemade concoction
Condition 1x week with coconut milk, banana or honey DC for 30 min-1hr
Moisturize with AVJ and seal with CO or oil mix
Set hair with 8 twists with perm rods on the ends (I haven't found a better way to set my hair so far)
Wear out for 2 days max, then put into some simple protective style (bun, halo twists, 2 dutch braids)

I don't trim that often (2-3x a year) but when I do, I usually take off an inch or more each time. So for 2019, I will dust 0.25" every 3 months. That way I can keep up with my ends without really losing any length.
I also have to detangle my hair once a week with a comb or brush of some kind. I did a month of finger detangling and it was a mess for my hair :nono: . My hair sheds a lot and knots too much for that. I've been trying to find the right tool for this, so today I bought a Conair Wet brush. I hope that I love it LOL

Ok, I'm ready!

Current Length: CBL
Goal Length: APL

Regimen:
HOT every other week week Vatika coconut oil or Mustard oil
Currently testing shampoo once every other week and cowashing with a cleansing conditioner every in between week
DC every shampoo
RO with olive oil, then rinse the excess with any moisturizing conditioner

I use LCO to moisturize my hair one section at a time, adding shea butter to the ends as I'm braiding and let my hair air dry in 8-10 braids. Then I put hair in dutch braids.

Currently I re-do my dutch braids about every other day, but in a perfect world I'll only re-do them once during the week. I don't comb or wet my hair when rebraiding, just add cream or oil and more shea butter to the ends.

I'm in a couple other challenges but feel compelled to join this one, since I am guilty of leaving my hair in a bun too long, which is knotting my hair, promoting dryness, and thinning my edges (stress from being pulled back too much).

I'm grazing HL, but I want to be fully TBL or longer by June 2019.

I have detangling issues as well, and weekly sessions really help. I try to only finger detangle, but my favorite brush is linked below! I'm pretty sure it's a dog brush, but it really works so well! My sisters keep trying to steal it lol! Those wood pins are totally seamless.

Really sorry to hear about your setback, girl. Thankfully, this hair keeps growing! You'll have a whole new head of hair by 2020!

I have never used a braid spray, but I am purchasing a 16oz bottle of vegetable glycerin to add to my aloe vera leave in spray. Do you think you could DIY a braid spray?

Im in I'm going to try to wear my hair in a protective style the whole year, i wanna grow my hair out so by the end of the year i can do a major chop to cut my hair even all the way around.

Thanks for joining!

One of my major goals is to be able to shape my hair in a way where wearing it out doesn't feel so awkward. These lengths are all over the place lol. So I feel you!

I must say -- I am so glad that you use Belle Bar products. I've been browsing their site a lot lately but those prices are a little intimidating lol! What would you say is a must-have product from them?

Try GIVEME50 (for 50% off) if that doesn’t work, I’ll message you my 30% off code.

I have a top 3 must have:

  1. Hibiscus Mask
  2. Argan Oil Shine Butter
  3. Aloe Vera Leave In
One 5oz bag is good for 30 uses. That last me about 8 months cause I alternate weekly w/ masks. Though on the more pricey side, I do make sure to measure out my usage.

Ex: Aloe Leave In ($95 - 18 uses). 1 tsp (1 use) yields 3/4 cup of spray. That lasts me about 2 weeks. Ideally, one pack should last me 8-9 months. With 50% off. I definitely stocked up on my faves.

Alright, so here’s what I’m starting with:

Current length: 34 inches (a bit Passed TBL)
2019 Goal length: Classic
Ultimate goal length: Thigh Length, blunt even hemline.
via Imgflip Meme Generator

*************
As far as my regimen goes, it kind of morphs to whatever my hair needs at the time. I have been drifting off into LCO/LOC territory.

Shampoo: as needed, just the roots. I don’t particularly have a need to pre-poo.

Condition: I Co-Wash as needed. Usually 2-3 times a week.

Deep Condition: I do after a wash or co-wash. So 2-3 times as a week as well.

*************
Main thing to look out for is manipulation. As my hair gets longer, and with it being extremely fine, sometimes there’s no avoiding snapping a hair or two even with the gentlest touch. Best thing I’ve been doing is going hair tool free and finger detangling. I detangle once with a wide tooth comb in the shower and after that only my fingers touch my hair.

*************
Most styles I do are buns and two Dutch braids. They cause the least amount of breakage, and I can do them quickly.
*************

Current products:
*Shea Moisture Manuka Honey Line. Shampoo, conditioner, DC, and leave in
*Renpure Conditioners x 2
* Elizavecca Collagen Protein Treatment
* Aunt Jackie’s, sulfate free shampoo in applicator bottle
* IC Fantasia Serum
* IC Fantasia JBCO
* a few cheapie brands for when I install twists or braids which I probably won’t be doing much next year.

In the process of growing my hair back to classic length..I had to cut my hair couple of months ago,I had an accident, was in the hospital 2months had to learn how to walk again, the front of my hair was cut to my chin & the back was cut into a pixie so to sum it up,my hair was cut into a very short bob....Fast forward,my hair in the back is touching my shoulders and the front is touching my chest area,so I’m greatful that it’s starting to grow.

•I will pro poo different methods
•Dc weekly
•Rice Water after Dc
•During the week spray rice water on my scalp only 2xs..
•Finger detangle
•Keep my hair moisturized
•Henna every couple of weeks
•Use Ayurvedic Creams & Leave in’s
•Keep Shea butter mix on ends

Happy Hair Growing!

I am joining. This is exactly what I need, a low manipulation challenge that is mindful of not turning protective styles into neglective styles. I'm so guilty of that.

My chosen protective styles:
Mainly a twisted low tension bun (weekend) or a twistout low tension bun (weekdays). As long as I don't separate my twistout, my twistout serves as a great protective style that retains moisture.

Regimen:
Clarify and chelate (monthly)
Shampoo (weekly)
Protein treatment (biweekly)
Deep Condition (weekly)
Apply leave-ins (weekly)
Seal with butter (weekly)
Twist (weekly)

Products on hand I'll use:
Nexxus Keraphix Shampoo
Nexxus Keraphix conditioner
Nexxus Keraphix reconstructor
Redken All Soft Shampoo
APB UCS
APB NEB
APB rice water shampoo
APB rice water conditioner
APB keratin treatment
Oyin Hair Dew leave in
Redken Anti-snap leave in
My DIY whipped shea butter mix

I'll post again on Jan 1 to show my starting point and goals. I need to first trim/cut my hair to give my ends a fighting chance. My hair length is all over the place right now.

Do you have any tips for keeping them neat? Mine always get frizzy after day one, even if I wrap them in a scarf. :/ 2 days is the longest I can go.

To be honest I Get braid shred and frizz as well. Moisturizing them helps tame it. I usually wrap them around themselves to make braided buns. I’m not sure if you have enough length for that, but maybe Bobby pinning them like so might help preserve the style? My hair isn’t one length, so that’s another factor as to why my braids tend to frizz. Making them into buns, tends to be the only way I can mitigate frizz. Otherwise I just accept it.
