Setting To Success 2019

I was in braids all summer and in a bun from September - December. My hair has suffered. It's not super terrible but definitely not in tip top shape. The only tried and true way I know for sure to have super healthy hair is through roller setting. So here I go...

Attached is a starting pic after doing my hair this past weekend. I washed, conditioned, clear cellophane, blow dried, pressed and trimmed. Yes my ends were worse than what you see. I am going to attempt to make this the last time I blow dry for at least 6 months. I need to smooth these cuticles out.

I've definitely fallen off, but I've been in protective styles mostly. When I take down these crochet braids I'll hopefully get a break before I put in something else.

^^Not a big fan of ponytail rollersets, not because they don't stretch but just because the roots take so long to dry for me and I'm too impatient to do smaller ponytails.

Helloooooo

Anyone home?

No?

Okay, well...

Yesterday was wash day for me and I started rollersetting but I got tired when I realized an hour into it that I was only 1/3 done. Rollersetting is my preferred drying method but it just takes me so much longer to do on my natural hair.

I'm here. I took my pics down because I thought there was no interest. I'm setting again this weekend so I'll be sure to post.

Do ponytail rollersets actually work on natural hair? If the roots can actually stretch, that would be great. I remember bookmarking these two videos. The second one would be perfect for styling, but her hair looks so silkier/looser textured than my hair when wet:
How long does it usually take you guys to install?
Not gonna lie, it takes me hours but I also do one roller and then browse the internet for 15 minutes then repeat.

Roller Setting is still my favorite method to dry and stretch my hair. I love that once I set, my hair is good for up to 3 weeks & all I have to do is apply Shea Butter every few days. I roller set every other wash.

I will link my favorite Roller Setting thread. It was very active and we all took great notes for every set we did. Probably because there were tons of setting newbies and lots of questions were answered. The first page also has good links to past setting threads.

Did my set this past weekend and I think this is the best one I've done on my own hair in a while. I am the zen master of roller setting on everyone except myself. Anyway, rather pleased with the results. Immediate difference in smoothness.

This is a day-old set, and I'm very happy that my ends are still tightly curled. I came straight out of the rollers, did a very light tap on my roots and stuffed my hair into a bonnet for the night. Pic is when I got up this morning.

Pretty!!! Your hair is so smooth. I'm always amazed at the results that roller setting gives. I love it!

Lovely set @Browndilocks :yep:

I fell off rollersetting majorly for 2018 but I have been setting every week in January with decent results. I am setting now as it happens.

I have only used:-

Ouai Leave In
Keracare Foam Wrap set lotion

I need to be very light on product now as the hair simply won't set otherwise.

If it looks decent I'll take pics in the AM.

Beautiful! What type of rollers used? Are you natural or relaxed?

I am a natural 4A. I used the traditional magnetic rollers that need clips and I used the gray ones. I have been stalking hourglass rollers for about 2 years now and still haven't caved in. Might purchase those soon but I wanted to make sure that I was actually going to stick to setting before I went out and started buying more stuff.

Gorgeous hair!! What is the ratio of lottabody to water that you used for the set?

Planned to do my first rollerset tomorrow after washing my hair. I'm now reconsidering it. I watched a few youtube videos and realized that rollersets on 4a/4b hair looks sleeker on stretched hair vs freshly washed hair. I'm thinking of holding out until I have stretched hair again. Perhaps I'm overthinking it. Do any 4a/4b naturals do their rollersets on freshly washed damp hair?

I do my rollersets on freshly washed hair. Your sets will come out better if you wet each section before rolling. It needs to be wet not damp. Make your sections small so you can pull your roots taut. Sit under the dryer so the heat can dry your hair while it is stretched. Air drying allows your hair to revert to much while your hair drys and it's too hard to get a straight set.

Let your hair cool before you take out the rollers. But you can definitely get a nice looking rollerset on freshly washed hair.

Ahh okay. So the key is to roll with really wet hair, dry with heat, then let it cool before taking the rollers out. Got it. Will try this out next time. Thanks!

It would be nice to see how we are styling our roller sets and how we maintain them.

This is how I'm wearing my hair today:

IMAG5238_1.jpg

I call it a twisted top knot. I'll see if it holds up for the next 3/4 days. My hair is sooooooo soft so it's not really staying in place like I want....but I'll take soft hair over hard/stuck in place hair anyday!
