So I Tried Kinky Curly Custard And Did Not Like It

I purchased the Curly Custard and the leave in to try. All the naturals I've seen pretty much love it. I have a lot of hair and couldnt justify the cost of that little jar.

Anyway I decided to try it and my hair absolutely hated it. The minute I put the custard on my hair felt dry and hard. My washngos usually last me a solid 5 to 6 days. On day two it was looking like hot garbage.

I never do my washngos on soaking wet hair. Its usually towel dried, but I did this one in the shower on soaking hair.

Does anyone else not like it?

I liked the results but did not care for the gunky feel it left on my hair.. It was very filmy and made me want to wash my hair the next day. I diluted it the next time I used it and it wasn't so bad...

I love the gel and leave in, but I dont use it for wash n gos. I use the kcnt leave in, shea butter, then the kccc gel for braidouts and slicking edges. It's my holy grail.

Sorry to hear it didn't work for you, every head of hair is different.

If you're up for trying to make it work, I would suggest using the gel as you normally would in your regimen. You mentioned you tried it on soaking wet hair, but you usually do wash n gos on towel dried hair. Also I would suggest layering it over something like the KCNT leave in or shea butter (or any oil your hair likes) to act as a buffer so your hair has less chance of drying out.

I loved both the leave-in and the custard. The custard gave me sooo much definition and my wng's would last for weeks. It works best when your hair is soaking wet, then apply the leave-in and then the custard. I would do my hair in sections. Your hair should be properly moisturized-so I would deep condition overnight with the diluted leave-in and then the next day, I would section my hair, drench each section w/ a spray bottle of water, apply alittle more leave-in and then alittle bit of the custard. Once dry I used their oil to soften up the curls. It's def a learning curve. Mahognany curls on utube has a video on how to use it. I wish I could use it on my locs. It's a little too gummy/sticky for my locs and I'm afraid it wont wash out well.

Here is an old pic of my wng using the leave-in and the custard. I have 3c/4a/4b-fine/coarse-high density hair. Shrinkage is crazy!!! I was almost at MBL in this pic

i'm like others hated the custard loved the leave in. It didn't make my hair dry but it made it gunky like someone up thread stated. It also took forever to dry. Eco is the way to go for long lasting and eden body work curling custard for soft fluffy and elongated. I also found that doing it in the shower for the eco is the way to go.

Heeey. KC custard and the leavein is a really nice combo product but there is a secret to it most people dont know.

The custard needs to be diluted, big time. Anywhere from a ratio of 1:3 or 1:6, so 1 oz. of custard to 3 parts water or 6 parts water. Mix in an applicator bottle like you use for coloring your hair, shake well then apply.

You may have to experiment with the concentrations but the results will be much better.

The custard is super concentrated and applying straight from jar to hair is almost always way too much product and unsatisfactory results.

The leave-in is the actual styler, the custard is the topper.
Tip #2. The Come Clean shampoo is a clarifier. The entire KC system (leave in + custard) tends to build up over time so the shampoo is needed to clarify all that off for a fresh start.

I will try this this weekend. Right now it's on the back of my product shelf.

You know what? @leona2025 ?
I've had the kccc since last year and hated it.
The stylist used it on me last year, and I felt pressured to buy it, and ended up hating it.

Since last year, I've used about half of it, and was meh.

Last week, I did a wash n go with it......layered it under my wetline xtreme gel...and it turned out BOMB!

This literally is one of the best wash n goes I've ever had, and I'm on day 7 now.... and my curls just seem to be getting better....(just shrinking more each day)
Because I layered it under the wetline xtreme gel which is moisturing for my hair, I haven't felt the drying effect. ( I also deep conditioned over night)
I love it! I'm actually going to look for more on sale, because this will now be in my weekly rotation...

Don't make me come out of these fresh braids. lol. Did you used the leave in, custard and then Wetline? Wetline have my washngos lasting 2 weeks already!.

I usually use mane choice leave in and wetline or if I feeling fancy I may layer it with texture id cream. lol.

KCKT is my holy grail ride or die ol faithful leave in!!! Only use on damp hair and with an extra spray of water. Conditioned easy to detangle hair every time.

I’m still working on my wash n go. But. In terms of the custard the first few times I used it either my hair became dry or took forever to dry. Both a result of too much product. It’s super concentrated so you don’t need nearly as much as you would w other gels. Literally a fingertip full for each section. I also find if I add a spritz of water when I apply (both the leave in and custard) I get much better results.

Can you elaborate about the tea splash? Do you make it yourself? Do you apply in the shower?

@SunkissedLife the splash of hibiscus tea works by bringing down the pH of the diluted Kinky Curly Custard. I steep a few (less than a handful) dried hibiscus flowers in a cup of hot boiled water and then use approximately 1-2 tsp to add to my KCCC, that I've already diluted about 50:50 with water. The hibiscus 'tea' is acidic (but less acidic than ACV or lemon juice) and I find it leaves my hair looking better and feeling smoother than using KCCC diluted with plain water. This is the only way I use this gel and for my hair, this mix works just right every time.

Definitely going to try diluting the custard because of the price but the combo (with the max hydration method) worked well for me when I was consistent. The Xtreme gel is my cheapo alternative but nothing beats the marshmallow (I think) in the custard for moisture.
