2020 Twist, Braid, Bun Challenge - No Hiding Your Hair

That's pretty much what I am going to do since I don't leave the house except to walk the neighborhood. My plan is to wash, condition, and steam today and dry overnight. Tomorrow I will put my hair in about 20 twists and repeat in 2 weeks. I also probably will not be dyeing my roots with henna. I will get creative with my headwraps...I don't know what I am going to look like coming out of this quarantine.

With staying at home, I've been maintaining my hair in about 8 juicy twists. Pulled back into a low and loose ponytail just to keep it off i=my shoulders.

My mini twists were too small and I hated the take down process. Never again.

I washed my hair today, but didn't have time to detangle and style it, so I've just two strand twisted the chunky twists that I washed in.

For the past two weeks I was in "twaids" (braided roots with twisted length) which I three strand twisted along the length. Yesterday, I washed and installed two strand twists.

I'm still trying to maintain the same twisting grid.

My hair has been twisted in large twists. I then braided my twists into two big braids. I have been keeping them moisturized and pinned up and that is it.

Last week I got into a heavy finger detangling/mini twist session that took couple of days. My shrinkage seems to be becoming greater as time goes on.

I also tried something a bit different: I was working in sections taking down some loose braids, I'd detangle, twist, and then I'd trim the hair in that section. Normally, I'd trim all of my twists at the same time. After trimming each section, I threaded them (African threading), but I left "some gaps" so that I can moisturize without taking the threads out. I'm not sure if moisturizing this way will work but the sections are small enough, so we'll see.

I'm back to wearing large twists, this time three strands.

I think that at this time, larger twists are much more convenient for me than mini twists.

When the school year starts up, I will go back to mini-twists. I have been wearing larger twists or braids, that's all I can muster up now. I am steaming now with some old Jane Carter leave in for 30 minutes.

Is it too late for me to join this challenge? I am currently in mini braids with no extensions that I did this weekend. I am feeling like I am going to be in twists or braids for the rest of the year as I focus on growing out my last cut.

I added medium sized parts to my hair, but I twisted them tightly so that my hair would be stretched.

I've found that ever since I've started ayurveda, my shrinkage is on another level and looser twists no longer work that well for me.

I redid most of my hair this weekend. I have one section in the back left to go. I did not have a lot of shed hair but did notice some growth. So far it seems like I can go 2 weeks max before I feel the need to redo the front. It really bothers me when the front gets really frizzy and I am not really sure how to combat that. Any suggestions? I planning on sticking with the braids over the summer.

I would like to join! I have been wearing my hair in twists since the lockdown as my style while growing out my damaged hair.

1. What is your primary style (twists, braids, bunning, etc.)?
I keep my hair in about 95-100 twists which I either put in two braids or buns. I treat the twists same as I would if my hair was loose.

2. What is your style maintenance regimen?
I have a very simple routine.
  • Wash day is on the weekends with some shampoo and conditioner. Followed up with a moisturized with an oil mix + shea butter.
  • About every 2-3 days during the week I will re-moisturize my hair by misting it with plain water and sealing with the oil mix + shea butter.
  • I re-twist any twists that are starting to tangle because I don't want my hair to lock. Once a month I re-twist all my hair.
  • I only wash my hair in the twists, never loose.
3. Are you natural, relaxed, transitioning?
Transitioning from texlaxed to natural

4. What do you hope to achieve from the challenge?
Hope to achieve consistency with my regime.

5. How often will you restyle your hair?
I re-twist my whole head about once a month. Every week on wash day I re-twist any twists that are starting to look weird or tangle up on themselves.

6. Include Starting Pic.
I may share a photo later but I'm too embarrassed to share right now since my hair is really damaged.

Welcome! I'd love to see your hair if/ when you become comfortable. I'm intrigued by the number of twists that you are maintaining.

Welp Ladies,

I have decided to loc! I have been a loose natural now for 11 years and I have loved every bit of it. I am excited about this new chapter. It was weird only using rosewater/vitamin e spray to twist my hair. I am mentally preparing for the frizz and have gotten use to the shrinkage. From BSL to NL...gotta love it.

Your starter locs are so pretty! I'm sure they will blossom into beautiful locs when they mature.
How did the rosewater with vitamin E make your hair feel?

I had to trim my ends over the weekend. I was surprised that they were so dry and crunchy considering I mist and seal daily. I switched to water and aloe vera with Vitamin E to see if that will help. 7 weeks and counting!

I'm back in mini twists and I love the results. I haven't worn mini twists in so long, but with this install, I'm finally seeing that my hair has been turning around. :yay:

This means that wearing medium and jumbo twists is ok for my hair.

Took out my hair and did a good wash while my hair was loose. Over an hair for the whole process... so, yeah I'm back in mini-twists. lol I think I have a 100 twists, and have 2 braids in the nape area. Not planning to completely take my hair out again until the end of the year.
I am looking for some silk and satin scarves but have not been able to find any that are solid colors.

I'm itching to change my hair style. I have had it in mini braids all summer. I did a full rebraid once and kept my hair braided for a total of 12 weeks. That's longer than I would have kept braids in with extensions. I plan on taking them out today and tomorrow. Saturday I will do some twists and wear them for a week maybe two and then go back to mini braid mode.

I finally took some pictures of my hair today. There are more but I have the shrink them because they are too big to upload. :( I have a little over 100 twists that are freshly done as of last Friday. Most of the photos are showing the damaged hair that is growing out. I'm happy with the amount of new growth I have gotten in 10 months. My hair has never grown this fast before!
I am working on myself and accepting the fact that my hair can't handle most things - heat, color, relaxer. It just wants to be left alone. I did that all in 2019 and the difference is clear. I've been wearing twists consistently since April 2020.
