**starting photo in my media

1. What length is your hair at?
I think the top/front is past collar bone and the rest is close to or at APL

2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural?
Natural

3. Would you consider your hair healthy?
I thought I had a lot of broken pieces, but I don't. It's pretty healthy

4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey?
I got it colored at a salon some years ago. My hair broke off.
Not moisturizing enough. It gets a ton of single strand knots and breaks
Not sealing or using oils. I know I had hygral fatigue
I skipped some trims during 2018/19 and so I had to do a major trim Dec 19

5. What are you going to do differently this year?
Moisturizing nearly everyday if I can. Using oil and butter to seal. Baggy more often. Sticking to my weekly regimen or use a leave in spray if I have braids or something

6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?
I'll get a silk press and trim with vintage pin curls with a cute pin and side part... even if I'm only going to the grocery store.
I'm going to stop using extensions in my protective styles too

I’m in!!! My hair is past waist length when straight, but I’m trying to get to APL/BSL in my wash and go. I have a ton of shrinkage, so BSL is aspirational.

1. What length is your hair at? Shoulder length wash and go
2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural? Natural!
3. Would you consider your hair healthy? I think so? I have a little spot at my crown that is occasionally sore. My dermatologist says I have no signs of thinning in the area. I think I’m recovering from 10 years of buns in that area of my scalp.
4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey? Styling my hair. My hair retains length well but it was always up in a bun and during quarantine I just decided I couldn’t do it I’ve worn my hair down in a wash and go since September 1, 2020.
5. What are you going to do differently this year? Keep wearing my hair down! No direct heat. Try to stick to twice a week washing and trims every 3 months.
6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL? Take lots of pictures!!!

I’m getting a trim next week, but for now here is my starting picture.

Are non-straightened starting pictures ok? I don't use heat on my hair any more and I usually just pull to check length :look:

1. What length is your hair at?
I think the front is APL based on how much longer it is than the back, which is a little past CBL.

2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural?
Natural

3. Would you consider your hair healthy?
Yes.

4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey?
I thought that I was protein sensitive when my hair actually needs and thrives off of protein. My hair was frizzy and would break like crazy. I also let my hair dry out because I would apply light products on wet hair when heavy products on dry or damp hair works best for me.

5. What are you going to do differently this year?
Using protein and a cassia gloss weekly, and henna monthly. Moisturizing with heavy products on damp/dry hair. Mid-week moisture refreshers.

6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?
Put it in one bun! I have a big head and the hair at my back is short, so I need to get to APL to be able to put all my hair in one bun instead of 2.

hey ladies, looking forward to this challenge! Great topics. Thanks for hosting @apple_natural

1. What length is your hair at?
Full APL and very close to BSL I think

My Goal Length is: Full MBL / Grazing WL

2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural?
Natural

3. Would you consider your hair healthy?
Yes, for the most part

4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey?
- My crown area has been a constant struggle, its more porous, and breaks easily compared to the rest of my hair.
- I struggle with SSKs and crunchy ends

5. What are you going to do differently this year?
A few things...
- I'm on a personal "no try" challenge. meaning for 2021 im not allowing myself to try any new products, and stick to what I know works well in my hair.
- I plan to microtrim/dust about 1/4inch to 1/8inch every 8 weeks. That works out to 6 trims a year. I know it sounds like a lot but the amount I will be taking off each time should add up to around an inch, maybe a little more. this would actually be less than i usually trim a year. But my hair is so prone to knots and tangles I think I'll benefit from frequent trims, and hopefully keep the knots away before they get a chance.
- Wearing my hair stretched (blow outs and rollersets) most of the time.
- I would like to continue doing my hair exclusively myself (except for braids/protective styles). Quarantine forced this on me this year, and Ive invested in all the tools to get salon quality hair at home, so at this point in my hair journey I see no reason to go to a salon. (But I retain my right to change my mind on this one :look: )

6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?
I will do a silk press (on myself lol)

Some other info you didnt ask for :drunk::drunk:(and mostly just adding as notes for myself)

Regimen
1. Prepoo with oil and detangle if necessary
2. Shampoo
3. Deep Condition
4. Rollerset OR blow out OR two strand twists

Staple Products:
Shampoos:

Clarifying: Joico Clarifying Shampoo

You got this, sis!

HA! Thank you lol

Cutting and deep trims out of boredom. Bleach/colouring my hair. Now only doing that once a year.

1. What length is your hair at? Bottom of my neck almost to my shoulder in the back.
2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural? Natural
3. Would you consider your hair healthy? Yes my hair is healthy
4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey? Earlier this year I had some breakage in the middle front part of my hair. Not sure how that happen but it has almost caught up with the rest of my hair now. Also, in September I cut one side of my hair too short when taking out braids and ended up cutting my hair smh. I had to get a corrective cut which set me way back. I was shoulder length at the time.
5. What are you going to do differently this year? Incorporate Ayurvedic ingredients back into my regimen. Start doing more clay washes and cowashing. I will use my stylist salon products once a month or so. Also going to try out rice water and see about adding that to my regimen as a prepoo step twice a month. I plan to do just wash n go's for 2021.

6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL? No special plans. When I get to MBL I do want to straighten my hair for the first time.

M/S as I should, LOL! Deep conditioning weekly. Finally long enough to bun throughout the year. Taking vitamins, drinking more water
6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?
Keep bunning and minding my business.

1. What length is your hair at?

I would say that my hair is almost full CBL.

I have some front layers that are graduating from chin to neck to SL to CBL, but I’ll be judging my growth by my overall length.

Back in the day, I wouldn’t call a length goal until my shortest layer hit that mark, but now, F that. I’m calling APL as soon as those back layers get there.

2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural?

Natural

3. Would you consider your hair healthy?

Yes, I do. I just got a cut that took me from slightly below APL to my current length. This was a result of many, many mid-shaft splits.

Even after that, I still do have some split ends in the front that were once midshaft. My next trim in approx 8 weeks should resolve all of that. But I am slowly giving up the idea that every single strand of hair on my head has to be perfect.

4. What has been some of the hurdles you
have had in your hair growth journey?

I’ve had too many to count. I’ve big chopped several times. My overall takeaway is that my hair can’t really handle a lot. Something as simple as trying a new detangling brush can cause me a set back (looking at you tangle teezer).

I am also a perfectionist, something I battle daily. If my hair is not going in the direction I think it should go, I’ll either want to start over, or I disinvest my energy.

5. What are you going to do differently this year?

No more trying new hair fads & home remedies. I’m going to stick to what I know works for my hair, and leave the experiments alone. They are fun, but my hair can’t handle it.

I’m going to try to stay motivated about caring for my hair by not hiding it. I will try different short term protective & low manipulation styles, new cute hair accessories, etc.

I will keep my regimen simple, and workable for my schedule and energy level. I will do a weekly hot oil pre-poo, wash, DC, blowout & style. I will moisturize as needed. In the summer, I may replace the blowouts with braid outs.

I will do regular trims this year. Probably every 8 weeks for a couple of cycles, and then I’ll switch to 12 weeks.

6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?

Nothing. I will just continue on to my next milestone.

1. What length is your hair at?

After my trim, I'm back at full sl.

2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural?

Transitioning (currently working with 3 textures)

3. Would you consider your hair healthy?

Yes, its probably the healthiest it's ever been.

4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey?

I've cut my hair multiple times, (had a mohawk, a pixie, bc'd 2 times, ect.). I've also had issues being consistent with my hair care, leading to damage.

5. What are you going to do differently this year?

I've been constant with my regimen and leaving my hair alone for the last few months and she has thrived. I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing.

6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?

I'm getting us a standing hair steamer.

Ignore the rolls in the photo, im working on them in 2021 too lol.

So my photos aren't popping up, I'll fix them and try to post them again soon.

1. What length is your hair at?
Between apl and bsl

2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural? Natural

3. Would you consider your hair healthy? Yes

4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey?

-I did not know I had low porosity hair and I was using the wrong products (silicones, hair butters, and heavy oils)

-I did not moisturize enough.
-I did not moisturize enough.

-I did not treat my hair well when wearing protective styles. I would forget to moisturize when wearing weaves and wore them too long.

5. What are you going to do differently this years?

-Moisturize & seal. Use the right products (no silicones, more jojoba oil)
-Do more buns and protective styles without extensions
-trim more regularly

6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?

  • Do a happy dance!!
  • Blow out with rev air
  • Continue to bun
  • Focus is on getting hair fuller and trim while rest of hair catch up.
The pictures are flat ironed versus blow dryer with rev air.

Would love to join in on this challenge. Goal is unstretched natural mid-back hair.

1. What length is your hair at?
MBL stretched, shoulder length unstretched.

2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural?
Natural

3. Would you consider your hair healthy?
Yes.

4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey?
Retaining length. I was always manipulating my hair and when COVID hit resulting in my need to work from home, I now have the time to focus on leaving my hair alone. I realize it likes to be left alone, as long as my scalp is well-oiled. I also wish to minimize tangles and frizz of my strands between wash days.

5. What are you going to do differently this year?
Buy silk pillowcases and head wraps, more protective styling, leaving my hair alone for several days at a time and trimming my ends more regularly.

6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?
Maintain the length as best as I could and hopefully set up an appointment for a silk press to celebrate.

Starting pic in its natural style state:

NYE side boob.
Thank you for starting this thread, @apple_natural!

1. What length is your hair at?
I would say just about full SL. It was blowdried and freshly trimmed in my pic.

2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural?
natural, 4a/b

3. Would you consider your hair healthy?
yes, I would say so.

4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey?
Trying to avoid trims causes more harm than good on my fine strands. Hormonal BC had my hair a wreck for about two years, but I think it is back on track.

5. What are you going to do differently this year?
I will be trimming on a regular basis, weekly or biweekly DC with heat, oiling my scalp with JBCO, keeping a healthy diet and water intake, exercise, keep a rotation of protective styles. I do these things, but this year is all about CONSISTENCY.

6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?
If I get to the number 4 on my shirt by the end of the year, I will be happy because that’s around blowdried APL, give or take. I’ll pull back on the hardcore protective styling in 2022 and do low manipulation instead. It’s easier with longer hair.

I was looking at my starting pic posted and realized that if I maximize my growth this coming year I could potentially push for WL. (Where my hand is touching my mid back is 4 inches, so 6 inches would put me at waist). Since my regimen is pretty solid, I want to try a supplement this year. Think I will try MSM, people seem to have good results with it.

Honestly, I went back and forth on my own goal based off of yours because I think we are about the same place and it looks like we have similar hair, so when you said BSL, I was thinking "wow, that is a modest goal, maybe I need to come back a little." I had MBL as my goal. I think you added MBL to your goal now, but I think we could both make it before the end of the year. I was considering WL too. If you go for it, I will lol.. I think I will know in about 6 months. I may be shooting for WL in the latter half of the year. My waist may be higher than yours though

Sis let’s go for it!! I removed the BSL from my original post. I didn’t want to overshoot my goal because I’m afraid if I put too much focus on length then I might let the health of my hair suffer. But that’s what this challenge is for right, keeping us accountable for health as well as length.

I’m going to set my goal as full MBL and grazing WL. You’re right, we got this!!

Gunning for MBL next year

4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey?
Cutting and deep trims out of boredom.....
I also do this. It was a real struggle for me this year to try to break the habit. I did end up trimming 4 times, but one of those times I think I did really good. Some parts didn't look like they needed to be trimmed, so I actually left them alone! That was a first.

1. What length is your hair at?
I am growing out an undercut, so part of my hair is at BSL and the other part is a full collar bone.

2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural?
I am natural.

3. Would you consider your hair healthy?
Yes, I consider my hair healthy.

4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey?
My disease causes hair loss.

5. What are you going to do differently this year?
Less manipulation.

6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?
Nothing special but continue to take care of my hair.

I will post pictures at another time.

keranikki

Natural, 3abc/4a, Fine, medium density
Saving my spot.
1. What length is your hair at?
My hair is currently between SL & APL. I will have my stylist trim it back to SL on 30 DEC. I will post my starting picture then. I may change my mind about trimming my hair back to SL. My short term goal is to get rid of the last 4" of ginger hair color. Since the bulk of my hair is currently between 10-12", cutting 4" off right now will limit my style options. Yet, cutting my hair back to shoulder length doesn't get rid of all the ginger color. Le sigh.....
2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural?
My hair is natural and colored. I'm growing out my professionally done ginger color, but I will continue to henna my hair.
3. Would you consider your hair healthy?
My hair is the healthiest it has ever been! I'm really enjoying my hair. I just want to increase my length. This past wash day, I realized that the ginger colored portion of my hair is not retaining moisture as well as the non- colored portion of my hair. It dries very quickly, like too fast. Ugh...
4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey?
My biggest hurdles were: consistency in the care for my hair, PJism, and stopping what was working for me due to time consumption.
5. What are you going to do differently this year?
I'm making time for myself. Period. For the winter months, I will be a straight- haired natural. During the late spring through summer, I will wet bun. My ends will stay tucked for 95% of the year. I may have to wear a wig as a protective style for half the year, instead of being a straight-haired natural. I don't want to put stress on my hair trying to tie my straightened hair into a bun, if I decide to cut 4" off.
I'm adding henna back into my regimen. Though it can be time consuming to use, my hair benefits from the protection henna gives, especially my ends. I will massage my scalp daily to ease tension.
I will exercise more regularly, drink 1 gallon of water daily, and take my vitamins. I will also ensure to meditate and be at peace with myself daily.
6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?
My goal is MBL by DEC 21. I don't know what I will do when I reach my goal. I will probably just keep growing my hair. My long term goal is hip length hair. I have changed my goal to APL. If I cut 4" off my hair, it will take me the whole year to get back to APL. My long term goal is still the same. Maybe I can reach my goal of HL by the time I retire in 3 years.

Below is the state of my hair right now
