@Mapleoats

My focus for the year is to get in my groove and stop focusing so much on hair! I’ve been natural since 2010 and this is the first time I’ve been wearing my hair out/down not stretched.

I’ll be working from home at least until April, and I hope by then I have the confidence to wear my wash and go to work!

But also my other focus is length LOL
I really hope to find my groove too! I think I’m getting closer... once upon a time trying new products was exciting, now it’s anxiety provoking LOL

Still a long way to go though.

@apple_natural the air wrap is a blow dry tool by Dyson that comes with a variety of different attachments, but the most useful one for textured hair is the firm brush attachment. It’s dyson so of course it’s ridiculously expensive but for a natural interested in blow drying often it’s a great investment. It won’t fry your hair and it gives me the sleekest blow out ever. I love it! Just not the price lol. Wouldn’t recommend to someone who doesn’t like a stretched look

I bought a Kasho pair of shears. An investment, but worth it for the longterm.

The Airwrap will be a first purchase for me. Its gotten great reviews on this forum and has a smoothing brush I can use for easier blowdrying.
Woah they are expensive. You know what, I appreciate the seriousness you have in clipping your hair. I looked up the Airwrap just now too. Fancy! It looks cool. I hope you love it!

This is my first time hearing of this. I would probably invest this much into it if I made my waist length goal. I can see that.. Im looking for videos on it being used on my kind of 4 type hair. I hope it gets the roots good. I find that I dont always get my roots well when I blow dry. I dont know if its because I dont want the heat on my scalp or what, but I can't stand when I do that

You can see my review here https://longhaircareforum.com/threads/has-anyone-tried-the-dyson-airwrap.845151/post-25568201

I used the air wrap prior to straightening my hair, and that plus the flat iron I used enable me to get silk press results at home with one pass at 400! I almost feel like my hair is too straight and silky. My scarves keep falling off at night and I’ve never had this problem before

Hmm... I like it. I would do it if I didn't have someone else straighten my hair. If I decided to start straightening it myself, I would buy it... and if I earned it by making my length goals. I would gift it to myself.

I like that you keep up with your trim date in your signature. I'll have to borrow that idea if you do not mind ma'am.

How do you want use the fenugreek and neem?

I want to use it as a detangling pre-poo. I've used fenugreek as a pre-poo off and on but I keep on falling off with the DIY, but it makes my hair feel so good and it's cheaper to mix aloe vera and fenugreek up than buying conditioners and treatments. I also want to incorporate neem as well for the extra scalp benefits and hair growth stimulation. To help me stay consistent, I plan on making the mix in batches and freezing rather than trying to make a fresh batch weekly

I'm here for it!

* Tell us about your hair...

1. What length is your hair at?
BSL

2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural?
Natural

3. Would you consider your hair healthy?
Yes

4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey?
Inconsistency & not sticking to what I know has worked in the past for length retention, which is long term (3 months) protective styling.
My hair grows slow and I dont retain much if I'm protective styling short term, although topknot buns did work for me this summer.

5. What are you going to do differently this year?
Im going to do what I did when my hair retained the most; that involves wearing protective style without taking down the cornrows for 3 months at a time.
That looks like this:
1. Get cornrows for crochet hair style.
2. By the 6-week mark, I take off the style that is crochet'd on my cornrows. Wash, deep condition, and crochet a different style for another 6 weeks.
3. In the meantime, I'll be watering my cornrows (water with a drop of ACV), spraying on olive oil, and massaging the scalp daily!
4. When I hit 3 months: steam and take down style, pre poo (aloe+hot oil), shampoo, deep condition (+1 spoon of henna), detangle, blow dry, dust, braid up and, continue protective styling for another 3 months hopefully!

6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?
Once I reach MBL (2 inches away), I'll keep going for WL (another 2 inches away) so ongoing TLC! And then I'll look in to staple styles.

* Mapleoats asks; "What is your focus besides length this year?"
Consistency!

Been sick this week but I went ahead and washed my hair anyway last night. My hair has been at a high hydration level lately and I don't want to mess that up.

Cleansed w/ Naturalicious Moroccan Rhassoul Clay Treatment
Rinsed
Reapplied the Clay treatment and Naturalicious Divine Shine Moisture Lock Frizz Fighter Oil on top and deep conditioned w/ heat for 30 mins.
Applied Soultanicals Knot Sauce Detangler & Can't Believe it's Knot Butta on top.
Styled with Aunt Jackie's Ice Curls Curling Jelly for a wash and go.

I like that you call it "watering" your cornrows lol. That's cute! I feel like it makes sense to say it that way. I always want to. How do you steam your hair? Do you use a device or like how do you do that? Also, your schedule seems pretty solid. It seems like everyone in here trims at least 4 times a year in here. I'm feeling more confident about doing that.

Great questions!

All throughout this stay at home period, my husband and I cook dinner 6 nights a week and order in one night. On those 6 nights we have a green vegetable with dinner. Sometimes it’s a leafy green, other times it’s asparagus or snap peas or something like that.

I did start taking vitamins in November and I’m hoping 2021 is the year I’m consistent throughout the year.

I took nutrafol hair vitamins for 3 weeks and got severe acne from the biotin. Now I’m just taking a women’s daily vitamin that has much much less biotin.

1. 5x a week. I mix it up between a kale salad, Athletic Greens powder and Ujido Ceremonial Blend Matcha. Ceremonial blend matcha has more antioxidant benefits than many leafy greens, and its my quick go to in the mornings before running errands/working out.

2. We are what we eat! I believe taking care of our insides is just as important as taking care of our crown. I currently swear by sea moss for my daily nutrients, incorporate flaxseed and chia seeds in my daily intake, and currently follow a low-carb/no sugar diet. I have noticed my strands gained thickness and some length since changing my diet but I also think diet, combined with great hair products is moving my hair in the right direction.

In the coming months I plan to incorporate a colon/liver/worm cleanse and return to colon hydrotherapy to ensure my body flushes itself of all toxins. The colon is like the sewer for our body, and it needs a thorough scrub ever so often to ensure our body is running efficiently. I strongly believe health starts with the gut, and that includes the colon.

I don’t have the healthiest diet, but I still manage to grow hair. :look: I’ve actually never checked for a link between my diet and my hair growth... Although, the one time I really felt like my hair was growing particularly fast was when I was living on the eastern shore, and my diet was mostly just seafood— salmon and crab legs multiple times per week. At the time, I thought it was because the water was better, but now I think it may have been my diet and all the Omega 3 fatty acids I was intaking.

This year in addition to cleaning up my diet overall (I have some pounds to lose as well), I plan to:

1. Take a multi-vitamin consistently. I take Olly women’s multi.

2. Take a Flaxseed oil supplement, and increase my intake of Omega-3 rich seafood to at least 3x weekly.

3. Have a daily green smoothie with wheatgrass. I will post the recipe once I figure out the tastiest blend.

This is it for now. I’m still researching other dietary changes I can make that will directly effect my hair growth.

I already take vitamins I have been forgetting here and there so I plan to get back on it consistently. I also have been slacking on my water intake so I plan to make sure I up that for January as well.

I haven't really noticed a link between my nutrition and my hair growing. I've been taking vitamins but I haven't been consistent with them. Taking one daily is going to be my goal.

I do think I can attribute my hair growth and retention more towards hair care practices than nutrients. I started my hair journey in college and I wasn’t thinking about vegetables.

Over the past 10 years and during my grow outs (transition to natural, chopped my hip length hair to shoulder length out of boredom, this last horrible haircut I got two weeks ago) I have been consistently active. I workout 5-7 days a week and I think the increased blood flow is helpful.

Mapleoats

I’m not sure if I’ve made the link between nutrients and growth, but I’ve only started paying attention to that sort of thing in the last year.

i take a multivitamin and vitamin d daily. When I remember I take an omega too. I take iron on and off due to chronic mild anemia (due to a health condition I will always be slightly anemic)

i recently started taking MSM and will start drinking bamboo tea whenever it gets here lol.

i workout on and off, going through phases of being highly active and phases of being really sedentary. I’d like to work out consistently and stay active throughout all of 2021, and beyond Ofcourse.

I started a gallon a day challenge for 7 days. I started yesterday. It seems like a bit too much water, but I'm going to keep trying to do it unless I get a headache. I just bought gallons of water to make measuring easier

The perks of being at home. I love when people cook at home every night.... Try to be consistent at least through January. That's your challenge I guess lol and yes there is a way to over do the biotin for sure. I don't believe many people need 10,000mcg of biotin. Biotin is clearing my old hypertrophic scars though

@toaster
ETA! I didn't even put in how adorable I thought it is that you and hubby cook every night. I was looking to make sure I got all the responses and I saw your post. I was like awww! how cute. Then i looked at my response and I was like "really?? why didn't I say how cute and inspiring this was??" My written response didn't match my feeling lol I'm going to try to be like you guys with the day to day cooking. We currently batch cook and I'm so over it. Plus, I think day to day cooking is less stressful since I can just change the meal tomorrow if I dont like it. This should be my one thing I do for January... I'm pretty sure it will be

Healthy! I love all of this. Interesting that you've gained strand thickness. It makes sense

Hello everyone! I lurked this forum since late 2010–I was 19, now I’m 30 and getting serious about my hair after falling through the weave rabbit hole.
1. What length is your hair at?
2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural?
3. Would you consider your hair healthy?
4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey?
5. What are you going to do differently this year?
6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?
* Mapleoats asks; "What is your focus besides length this year?"

1. My hair length is 14.5 inches all over. It might be APL but I claim full SL because I’m too scared to get it fully straight. I’m hopeful that if I continue with my new found habits I will not plateau. My hair is 4A/4B, Fine, Medium Density.

2. My hair is natural for the most part but I bleached my ends in February and then dyed my hair black in September.

3. I’ve been nursing my hair since April so it’s well on its way to looking and feeling healthy. I’m not seeing any breakage and my curl pattern is intact so I’m not fussing about anything.

4. The first few years of my natural Journey were great (2010-2012), I followed all the rules and grew my hair to about 12 inches—the longest it had ever been in my life. Before that I had mostly known relaxers, braids and ‘pick and drop’.

When I started to gain some length (and a bit of money) I got into flatirons and weaves and tried to be a straight haired natural even though my texture is fine. I got addicted to this look and suffered many setbacks (2012-2016). My hair didn’t budge past 13 inches and I gave up on my growth journey.

Around 2016 I put away the flat irons and went on a heartless journey but alternated between single twists and curly weaves. This also failed because I wasn’t adequately moisturizing my hair and my take down technique was atrocious. I thought that maybe I wasn’t meant to have long hair. I stayed stuck at 13 inches!

In 2019, I went to Asia and stayed in braids and let it all out when I ran out of braiding hair...I also kinda rediscovered the beauty of my hair and got many compliments. This year, I started dating a guy who truly encouraged me to wear it naturally. I’ve been extensionless for about 9 months STRAIGHT now, which is huge for me. My hair has been getting the TLC it craved and received in the beginning of my hair journey thus far and it’s been a complete turn around. My hair is growing like a weed.

5. This year was about giving my hair a fighting chance and I will be continuing that in 2021. No more using fake ‘protective’ styles as a crutch to never deal with my hair. If I want a little extra I will be using better length clip-ins that won’t stay for more that 24hrs. My hair will not go more than 72hrs without receiving moisture.

6. When I reach full APL I will carry on as usual. When I reach BSL I will treat myself to a trim at Curl Embassadors.

I will pre-poo overnight with Vatika Oil.
I will be using old school cholesterol treatments every other week along with a DC to strengthen my hair.
I will be consistent with washing, conditioning and moisturizing. I put my hair buns or just twist it up.
Styling with be tertiary in this journey—especially since I won’t be going anywhere any time soon.

Focus besides natural hair:
Diet overhaul—one small change I’ve made is having one salad a day. Focusing on nutrition before taste.
Exercise for at least 20 mins a day
And reading one book a week.

Current products:
Oils: vatika Oil, Ogx extra penetrating oil, tea tree oil, black seed oil, wild growth oil
Deep Conditioners: Manuka Honey, Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor oil DC, ORS hair mayonnaise, Lekair cholesterol
Treatments: Olaplex
Conditioners: Shea Moisture Manuka Honey, Aussie Moist, Shea moisture leave in milk
Shampoo: Shea Red Palm Oil detangling shampoo, Giovanni 50:50

(I’ll put these in my siggie once I complete my profile—I just want to mark my spot.)

This is right on time! I typically have leafy greens at dinner time. I eat more salads during warm weather months than cold weather months.
I'm currently undergoing a lifestyle change due to chronic high blood pressure, being 40lbs overweight, and to better treat symptoms of adenomyosis (similar to endometriosis).
I noticed my greatest growth time is between January- April due to annual New Year's resolutions (exercise, better eating habits, vitamin regimen). I'm over the yo-yo lifestyle.
What I have already started:
- Eat a large portion of veggies for at least one meal

What I will add:
- Drink a leafy green based smoothie daily

Welcome o! Your hair is beautiful! I love #5 the most and of course the man who loves your hair deserves an extra year of your life lol. Lets hear about your book reading too with your updates! Also, there are a few of here who have mentioned exercise. I'm going to post more about that for next month's topic. I'll be asking what we're doing for workout and hopefully helping us stick to it with some kind of mini challenge

This month's "Let's Talk" discussion is about nutrition. You're already eating a salad a day. What do you like on your salad?

I’m Nigerians so we rarely ever do salads, and when we do, it’s clearly a salad for folks who hate salads . I load mine up with avocado, feta cheese, tomatoes, and sometimes (gasp) bacon. I keep the dressing minimal, just olive oil. I top it off with pepper and salt.

My strategy is to add healthy food options that are fun to make—I love experimenting with smoothie bowls. So I won’t mind making a green smoothie bowl with spinach.

As for books, I’m reading a bunch. One book on healing relationship traumas called: Getting the love you want. Another called Invested—a book on investing. And I have to finish off Sapiens.

I know what you mean about salads during the warmer months. I don't actually care for cold salads either time. I have to put in steamed vegetables to get myself to eat it if I'm not feeling like it. Try to add your greens to your veggies maybe because another thing possible, but a little difficult, to do in the winter is to drink green smoothies. They're so good though, especially with red cabbage.

I wish I had the cure to inconsistency. I definitely need it. I have some ideas, but I have not actually seen benefits yet lol We'll keep uur group on track as much as we can this year. Feel free to encourage us with whatever ideas you have that is helping you overcome the yo-yo life!

I knew you were Nigerian when you said "pick and drop" :D your salad sounds really nice actually not just "for folks who hate salads lolol I love when people only have a light dressing. They seem so grown and healthy.... I guess I'm getting there. I put coconut aminos, sriracha, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds with steamed vegetables in a bowl of mixed greens for a salad... I know this concoction sounds awful but it's good lol Plus I'm trying to get in certain foods so I had to make it work

All types! I usually go through phases. Right before lockdown I was going to soulcycle three times a week and working out with a trainer in a gym twice a week.

Now that we’re at home I do FaceTime workouts with my trainer twice a week and ride my peloton 4-5 days.

I also love Pilates classes and videos.
SoulCycle! I have always wanted to go there, but never got around to it. I feel like they should start some video program like Peloton.... I wish there was an OrangeTheory closer to me because I really liked the class I trialed. Which do you like better - SoulCycle or Peloton?

I don’t have the healthiest diet, but I still manage to grow hair. :look: I’ve actually never checked for a link between my diet and my hair growth... Awesome plans!! What flaxseed oil supplement do you take?? I learned that it was really good for b12. I finished one bottle like 2 years ago and completely forgot what it was and why I chose that one. I don't know if it was a particular type I was supposed to get or what.

@keranikki you and Theresamonet are both doing green smoothies. By the way, what blender do you use? I feel like I've gone through a million blenders trying to get one that does not leave my leafy greens chunky. My grandmother's Nutribullet doesn't do that, but I have two blenders already so I didn't buy it yet. Also, try red cabbage. It is actually good lol or else tell me its gross and I will stop recommending it. I loved it. I love beets in my smoothies too, though, so... there may be something off with my taste buds
