Hey LHCF Family! :love3:

Regardless if you've strolled down the LHCF virtual halls monthly, weekly, or even daily, at some point or another, this forum has been heaven-sent. For me, in the last couple of months, I've learned so much this community. There's so much more for us all to learn and continue to pay forward.

The beautiful @beverly and I are happy to introduce the "Question of the Month". Every month, there will be a question surveyed to the forum. This will be an entertaining way of centralizing information for the present and future LHCF family members (and lurkers, alike).

There's such a need for OUR community to continue to produce relevant and updated information so that the next generation of kinkies, curlies, and coilies won't have to trailblaze in the same way most of us have.

This is our LEGACY. :crowned:

To get this thang poppin, this month's question is...

... If you HAD to choice one oil (carrier, pre-mix purchased, essential, etc.) for the rest of your life what would it be and why (even if it's none)?

I'll go first.

My oil of choice would be RICE BRAN OIL.

Idk where it's been my entire life but I love it! It's a little on the thicker side but it is extremely moisturizing. I use it on my skin by itself, in my DIY Ayurvedic oils, and my new Shea Butter mix. It's an oil that I feel truly penetrates and coats my hair that may be due to its high omega 3 content. I'm also considering using it as a pre-poo, I just feel some kind of way of washing out all this goodness.

There is an oil for every occasion!

If I could only use one for the rest of my life, it would be jojoba because of it's versatility and neutral-ness. It's non greasy and works great on skin.

Hemp seed oil is my real, #1 favorite of all time. BUT

Grapeseed, sweet almond, coconut, avocado, shea, tea tree, emu, Sunflower and sesame are all beautiful oils.

I'm also experimenting with DIY aloe vera oil.

I've tried a bunch of the exotic oils.... I need to go ahead and whip up into some shea butter before they get rancid..... If they do, I'll use on my feet.

I've literally tried them all over the last 20 years

ETA-- Castor and good quality ayurvedic oils are great, too!

I can't believe castor oil didn't make it into the poll. o_O

I can't choose one, but maybe I could choose 2. Coconut oil is one because of how it strengthens and lessens breakage. If I don't use it, I eventually start to notice more breakage. However, it can't be the only oil I use because if I use it all the time, often, my hair will eventually start to get hard. So I'd have to use another, and I guess that could be olive oil. In reality I almost always mix my olive and castor oil now, but I think olive is a little more versatile if I have to choose only 1 of them. That combination is great for softening and lasts longer on the hair than coconut. Coconut, olive, and castor are my golden trio

On the store bought side, i like the OGX Miracle Coconut Oil. That is a good product! It penetrates better than any natural oil I've tried; I'm sure they've done some kind of something to alter the structure. It's like it almost disappears into the hair. I don't think it will make my hair hard like pure coconut, but I've never tried using it a whole lot the way I once used coconut oil, so not sure. But this product penetrates so well, it's not heavy enough to do as good a job preventing tangling as the pure olive and castor mix is. Bonus, it smells great. Downside, it's not just oil, it's got weird things in there. Which I'm not opposed to on principle, but if you add too much like I did trying to achieve the weight and tangling prevention of something like pure olive oil, you'll end up with that plastic-y feeling that you get from a lot of the commercial products with -cones.

I've never tried babassu, but want to. I was unimpressed with jojoba and grapeseed, but it was a long time ago that I tried them.

You are so right, @nyeredzi :wallbash: I was trying to rearrange the combinations and left out Castor Oil. I should be disbarred from the board, (hair board, of course hehe.)

Castor oil!! It leaves my hair soft, adds definition to every style and gives my hair actual shine. I usually do end up mixing with olive oil to thin it, but I do use it pure occasionally during cooler months. I use oils on “out” styles, twist-outs and braid-outs. I don’t use oils on wash n gos as it interferes with the gel cast and hold.

I chose avocado since it’s the most unproblematic oil. It can be used year round no freezing (coconut oil), it doesn’t have a heavy smell (olive oil), it isn’t too thick, (castor oil) and it feels really good on my strands.
I still use the other oils in their respective seasons. I also have a few oil blends (homemade and store bought.) I used my chebe oil on my scalp yesterday for some growth. I can’t remember all ingredients from the top of my head, but coconut, castor, chebe and peppermint oil are in there for sure. The smell isn’t too offensive and it fades after the first day. I use chebe twice a week max.

Babassu oil,is my all time favorite,I can use it year round without issues..My hair/scalp is left hydrated, soft & smooth..

Another favorite,Sesame seed oil,yes it has a strong nutty scent, but it really helps to retain length & mixes well with my Ayurvedic powders.

Happy Hair Growing!
