Breakage...How much is too much?

How much breakage is considered 'abnormal'?

When I style my hair when it's straight, I lose anywhere from 2-4 hairs (no bulbs, only small pieces) by lightly combing or finger combing to 9-15 hairs (usually this occurs when I have to wash my hair soon or if I'm not super gentle).

When should I be concerned or should I be concerned now? I feel like when I read posts on here some women report no breakage ever, esp. when dealing with wet hair (I don't even count the amount I experience rollersetting b/c I'm sure it's more than 20 hairs).

Thanks in advance!

I get combfulls and I never try to figure out if they all have a bulb or not. The reason I get so much is I dont do complete comb throughs daily. But this amount is so minimal, I dont think you have to worry about it! now when you start seeing all over the floor, sink and your clothes! thats another story

Thanks. I'm trying not to be 'too extra' with the breakage thing, counting and whatnot all the time, but I feel like at times when I try to comb, I just start hearing 'pop and crackle' and sometimes I don't "see" any breakage, but I assume there must have been some to hear the pop, ya know? Sorry if that made no sense, lol.

on the hair journey we have all had or moment of 'too extra' on one thing or another

but yeah I have been where I was losing clump fulls of hair due to an oncoming illness, and even at that rate I still only lost half the thickness. look at me saying ONLY! HA! I was in tears daily! but you know I just mean that even with that I didnt go bald and I thought I was, so after something like that, I only take notice when its that bad , otherwise everything else is normal

I feel ya. When I hear stories about illness and the effects on our body (hair and skin), it really stops me from stressing about my own situation. I even feel kinda silly starting this thread after your experience and even thinking about my own grandma who recently lost all her hair due to chemo. Thanks for replying to me Irresistible :)

dont feel silly cause I needed a wake up call too and it happened when I was sitting next to chemo patients in the docs office, I left there real thankful for my now (I mean 'then') half thinned out head of hair :yep:

bumping.. i'm wondering if a little breakage is inevitable...

I know if I press I see hair all over the place, long and short with that i just expect it. I think as long as its minimal it can be normal, how could one know if they ever get breakage unless they litterally iinspected every hair coming out their head? you know?

so yeah I would say to a degree it probably is

For me, my breakage makes itself known. I see like 1cm hair coils on my fingers, carpet, and shirts. I recently realized that those little hairs add up to ~3.5 inches of breakage a year. Since that's more than half my growth rate, it's far too much for me to consider it normal...

yeah i was saying that I think that excessive breakage is gonna be showing up places like you said , like on the floor, sink, shirt etc. thats when I would think its beyond normal

I wouldn't call this breakage .. sounds more like shedding which is totally normal.

If you are only experiencing the loss through combing (and you are not finding hair all over the place) and it is minimal I wouldn't worry about it.

If I were you I would just check all my head to see if there are any shorter spot(s)..... If not then this is not real breakage.....
