The longer my hair gets, the thinner it gets

tiffers

Whisper "bleep boop" to yourself when you're sad.
WTH is up with THAT??? I've read about people saying this happened to them and I always thought, "I'll cross that bridge when the time comes"

Well my friends, the time is here  The longer my hair gets, it seems like it gets thinner and thinner. I see ladies with SL and APL hair and it looks so thick. Their hair has so much volume, and mine just sits there :perplexed I flat ironed my hair not too long ago and did the same technique I did when I was almost APL. Back then, the my hair looked soooo full. This time, it was just "there" :ohwell: It's not like I have split ends or my hair is damaged. It just keeps getting thinner and thinner for no freakin reason!

Le sigh.

Anyone else going through this? I'm seriously contemplating cutting to APL :look:

I don't know girl. Besides any visible breaking or damage IDK.

I will say though that I fear this since my hair is fine. I have found that using more protein more frequently helps with that but I still wonder how it will look at BSL.

my hair is fine too...i am wondering if my hair will look like a wet noodle when BSL...maybe layers can help..

Me too. I dont understand it. I thought it was breakage. I thought air drying would help, but idk.

I've actually noticed that women (generally of other races) with long hair (BSL or longer) tend to have what would be considered thin hair. I actually haven't seen many women (of any race) with thick hair below BSL. Maybe that's just the way it is... :ohwell:

if it's not breakage/damage, then maybe the actual STRANDS themselves could be thinner, like coming to a point, if that makes sense. thick when the first come out the scalp, but as then get older, they get thinner. . . maybe you can try castor oil. I've heard ladies talkin about how that 'thickens' their hair.

Does it feel thin from the roots? Are you having some excess shedding? There is a possibility that as your hair grows out the ends feel thinner because it's not all growing at the same rate...:perplexed I have heard that increasing the amount of protein you put on your hair might help as mentioned by gymfreak, but I think that consuming more protein in your diet might help as well...

Good luck!

Hmmm..Maybe:
you're overlapping when you relax
your ends are getting thinner through daily wear and tear

that's all i can think of right now..maybe u shouldn't flatiron it but rollerset it or something to increase volume

yep and increasing protein increases thickness

You have a point. The only women I see with very long hair that is also thick are Indian women and curly haired women.

Of course there are exceptions. Quite a few examples on this board.:yep:

Mine too...but, I have fine strands. My mom's hair is the same way. It's long (past bsl) and just real fine...almost looking thin.

When my hair is curly, its big...I cut a long layer into mine for more movement. It poofs up some when its rollerset.

I thought about this as well.. My hair is naturally thick from the root and has been thick at the ends before so IDK... I believe mine comes from excessive shedding & breakage so I cut 3 inches b/c I don't like the thin ends. I don't know what really could be causing it to be thin as it grows longer. I just say continue to baby your ends and keep them protected.

I'm experiencing this now..... I cut some layers into the top and sides while leaving some length in the back. It's fuller, but I still have baby fine hair that gets weighed down hella easy.

I have the same problem and this is why I never grow past shoulder length. Every time I try to grow as long as I can (and I've seriously tried 3 times) it ends up looking see through and stringy. My hair is fine and perhaps really fragile. I think I was growing out layers each time too so this could be the reason.

Well, I'm growing out layers once again and going for the "long"haul. I told my stylist to grow out the layers and give me a blunt cut as it grows. If it still comes out scraggly-looking when it gets to the shoulders, I'm giving up all together and just start rocking fly cuts permanently.... like Malinda Williams.

It doesn't feel thin at the roots, it gets thinner and thinners as I move my hands down the length of my hair :perplexed I don't overlap relaxers cause I always stretch at least 12 weeks, I'm up to 16 weeks now. I only use heat about 4 times a year. 99% of the time, my hair is in a bun.

I swear I'm not trippin, ya'll!

This is the style that I did when I was between SL and APL

This is recently when I did the same style

This is after the curls fell :perplexed See how thin it looks?

Hmmm....I don't know about anyone else but I honestly don't see the difference. :perplexed Your hair is beautiful girl:yep:

i honestly think its from the added weight. the longer ur hair gets the more weight is put on each strand and it just appears thinner when in fact its just being weighed down. that's just a guess, tho. i know that as my hair gets longer it's flatter for that very reason.

It may be that your hair is growing at different rates. Try and wait it out and let the rest catch up, maybe trimming along the way. It should thicken up over time. Good luck! :D

Whoops, I have the pictures backwards :drunk:

Oohh, ok that explains why I couldn't see the hair getting thinner. Well I'm actually experiencing this myself, but I'm growing out layers and I just attributed it to that. Do you think that the color along with the relaxer could be the culprit?

Whatever you do, DON'T CUT IT. Try following your hair's growth pattern for a cycle or two. For most, the nape drops in length first (then goes into resting phase), which can make the hair appear very thin. Eventually the crown and sides begin to catch up as well as they enter the growth phase as well. The only reason I cut is when my ends are damaged or split.

That's just how it goes, the longer something is the thinner it will appear, especially if your hair is naturally thin. Oh, and layers just makes it look thinner, having all the strands one length helps with looking thicker when u have fine strands.

Yeah, I thought about this...

I think my layers contribute to the thin look. The hair is not all even in the back so the bottom layer looks thin.

I think layers make it look thinner at the bottom.

ETA: my hair is fine btw...

Yup, I have been to wsl I don't know how many times, but I have to trim b/c my ends look too thin for my liking. It doesn't help that I have layers, and fine strands either. I still haven't quite figured out what to do, I believe Megatek is helping.:ohwell:

I know co washing works for some people but for months I was doing it and I thought it was great.....

BUT then my ends were see through. I have stopped for at least 3 mos and my hair has thickenend up like before.
I didn't cut it out completely but I do it just when I need a moisture boost or if I just want my hair to smell extra good.

ETA: It was growing, but you could see through my ends

Yup, I cut off 5 1/2 inches when I hit WSL then another 2 after that. It doesn't matter since my hair is naturally thin the longer it gets it will look that way, but to me it looks worst in pics than in real life. So I decided to only trim no more cuts for me. Oh and search and destroy is the worst for fine haired ladies over time it makes the ends looks jacked from snipping spits here and there, I like to just do my all around duster 1/4 of an inch.
