Can anyone recommend a shampoo and conditioner that contains DHT blocker. I live in the Atlanta area. So if anyone knows a store in Atlanta please forward this information to me.

DHT is supposed to be something produced in the body that causes hair loss. I read that on a hair loss site before.

ATLbeauty, I'm not sure of shampoos/conditioners, but I am aware of pills that are exclusively made to block DHT within the body...which is probably your best bet.

Arbonne International Shampoo and Conditioner contain herbal DHT blockers. Check out the Arbonne website for more info.

Definitely Nioxin products. Last year I was wearing my hair in box braids (no extensions) for about 3 months at a time (sometimes more). Well when I took my hair out of the braids I barely had any shedding. I used the Nioxin Scalp Cleanser everyday along with a regular conditioner so I know that using the Nioxin was the reason for the low amount of shedding that I experienced.

also, saw palmetto (eo or caps i think)is a natural dht blocker so you could add that to your own hair products (oils, conditioners etc.) Good Luck!

I have had HUGE success using a DHT blocker. I was not so sure it would work, but it has. I really was on my way to losing my hair....the dht blocker combined with healthy hair practices has turned my hair around for the better. I am so happy I took action and did something before it was too late.

Have you had any sucess pretty fine?

was this prescribed by a doctor? do u remember the brand? i'm about to go to the derm sometime next week because my edges are almost completely bald and i have no idea what's causing it. tia

Hey CS- yes it was prescribed by my Dermatologist. I was diagnosed with female pattern hair loss and she prescribed Spironolactone(DHT blocker). It took about 6 months before I noticed any change at all, but I stayed prayed up and just committed myself to turning this around.

I swear my hair density has increased! I have never had thick hair by any stretch of the imagination, but slowly I feel my hair getting thicker.

Unfortunately, the only thing that hasn't turned around for me are my edges. It's like a see saw, they grow, and then shed it's weird. I also think it is because I am hypothyroid as well that I have difficulty maintaining a healthy hairline.

Make sure that your derm does a full blood analysis also have her check your thyroid levels as well. HTH.

I am wishing you the best and hope that you get this figured out.

Oral spirnonolactone was the first thing my derm prescribed for my hairloss and I cosign SelfStyled--IT WORKS! You might also ask your derm about writing a prescription for topical spiro--it is mega expensive and is rarely covered by insurance but IMO, it works much faster than oral spiro.

I just purchased VitaTress Biotin Scalp Creme by Nexxus which has DHT Inhibitors. I didn't know it had DHT Inhibitors as I was purchasing it for the Biotin.

Hi lady! Unfortun. no. One thing that has helped some is Nizoral 2%. I was skeptical about it but with so many being helped by it I tried. It helps to slow it down some. It's the only thing thats helped any.

I'm one of those who had "thick hair to the ends" as my stylist used to say. But over the years the thinning has increased to where I"m always CUTTING my hair just to keep the ends from looking stringy. And then a few mos later they are yet stringy again! its hard.

I guess I'll have to get something Rx strength also.

Has anyone used a brand of Saw Palmetto that's worked? I used the walmart brand and it didn't.

Anyone used a brand of garlic that's worked? I used the "nature made" cvs brand and they didnt work. I'm wondering do the gel caps work best.

Is there anything else that's helped anyone?

I'm tired of washing my hair every 4 days with the Nizoral. It gets tangled and its just an inconvenience.

Apparently ketoconazole and other 'azoles (like that is found in MN) are DHT Blockers.

Yes the only thing that's maybe reduced the shedding about 30% is the Nizoral which is the prof name of ketoconazole. Here in the US it's sould OTC with only 1% concentration. You can buy online from Canada with 2% concentration without a Rx. Thats what I have. So ladys, try this it really helps. Just use a conditioner on the hair and apply the shampoo with a nozzle directly to the scalp to combact the dryness it causes. Now if i can only try something that helps the other 70% of this shedding! Jesus man it's sooooo frustrating seeing ends and strings on your head when you try sooooo hard. Glad i found this site though. You all are helping me vent lol.

HoneyDew, do you really think the MN ( i researched it here on this site and boy is this a shock!!!) helps with blocking dht? If so, I may can use it also to stop the shedding...

Anyone used the MN stuff with success to stop thinning?

Anyone?

Hello can you please use a few days and let us know if it works?

I test by counting hairs from combing with fingers or comb by section without the testing agent. Therefore I know my baseline number of shedded hairs daily. Sounds tedious I thought so to until I read on boards that is what others are doing to determine whats working. Do note this is for the serious thinners. Thinning hairs are the long ones with the bulb on the ends. Thats why I do a finger comb working my way from the ends to the scalp. Anywho....

I then use the testing agent in this case the biotin cream and finger comb daily, counting the next day to see if the number of shedded hairs decreased. Thats a quick way of knowing if a topical agent is working.

For internal stuff, i'll try anywhere from 1 wk to a month to test if it works. After a month if it doesn't work trust me it aint gonna do anything for ya.

what topical are you using a shampoo or a cream?

Even though this web-site is selling hair loss products, I really like how they present information: http://www.add-hair.com/dht-blockers.htm?cat=127.

DHT is produced when testosterone attaches itself to a hair follicle and the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme at the hair follicle turns the testosterone into DHT. DHT is 30 times stronger than testosterone. DHT is necessary especially in growing boys. It's what turns boys into men. It causes their prostate to grow, facial hair to grow and deepens their voice. However, too much DHT, can "suffocate" the hair follicle on the head.

Again, DHT causes facial hair to grow. Due to my age and thus my increasing facial hair, I take 160mg of Saw Palmetto along with 250mg Magnesium (PMS prevention) at night. I once added Saw Palmetto to my face toner and applied it all over my face with out concern. My eyebrows got thinner. So now I only put Saw Palmetto on my upper lip and chin 2x's a day to keep the facial hair at bay. In order for it to work best, I wax and pluck the stray hair and while the hair follicle is exposed I apply the SP directly to it. It works. Each growth cycle, my facial hair is a lot thinner and finer. I haven't gotten a chin hair in almost 2 months. Saw Palmetto is contraindicated in women who plan on bearing children. Of course, children should not ingest DHT blockers.

I bought the Groganics shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in products (not the salve) for my SO. He likes them. I purchase them from www.ebonyline.com.

However, it's possible to purchase natural DHT blockers herbal extracts and oils (Emu) and add them to your hair products.

I add Saw Palmetto, Fenugreek and Nettle Root extract along with Emu oil to my MegaTek. I primarily did this for my SO. He likes MT. After researching more on these extracts I concluded that if they don't help me the definitely will not hurt me. So I've been using them as well with no adverse effects.

Has anyone used a brand of Saw Palmetto that's worked? I purchased the liquid extract from www.herbalremedies.com to apply to my face and scalp. It works to keep the facial hair away. My SO takes the Sundown Naturals brand and he likes it. I take a local store brand (160mg) and it seems to be working for me. Some people have to take more. Every one is different. How much are you taking?

Anyone used a brand of garlic that's worked? I started using the Kyolic Aged Odorless Liquid Garlic Extract. It doesn't taste good but it doesn't give me headaches either.

Is there anything else that's helped anyone? Emu oil has shown positive effects in activating dormant hair follicles. http://www.emuoilnaturally.com/research.html

This company offers samples for sale: http://www.proanagen.com/productbycategory.asp

I am skeptical about it though. I guess when I see the price on the 3 month kit I raise an eyebrow. LOL

But for the sample price (1 cent), it is worth a try if someone wants to investigate.

You know i did some research look at what i found

http://www.hairloss-reversible.com/discus/messages/5/2677.html?1132275674

Finally, androgen binding studies performed with other imidazoles, such as clotrimazole, miconazole, and fluconozole, revealed that in this class of compounds only ketoconazole appears to interact with the androgen receptor.

Yes, my SO has typical male pattern baldness where the hair at his crown is very thin and baby fine and his temples recede. My SO is using different products to combat his hair loss. He started off using the Groganics line, then added MegaTek and now he's incorporating Emu oil. He started using Groganics Summer 2008 and MegaTek Nov 2008.

The Groganics slowed down/stopped the excessive shedding and thinning but we didn't see where new hair was growing in. When I noticed my edges recovering after using MegaTek he started using it too. So he continued using the Groganics shampoo and leave-in products along with applying MegaTek at night. At first he was skeptical about the products - he didn't want to get his hopes up. So he wasn't using the products every day. However, once we noticed little fine hairs popping up in his crown he started using the products every day and night as appropriate.

Two nights ago he and I both noticed he has more hair in the crown - it's starting to get thicker but the progress is very very very slow. One thing we both learned through out this ordeal is patience is key.

Even though his receding temples has stopped or slowed down a lot (we can't tell) the lost hair has not grown back. The research I've seen has shown that the follicles at the temples will not recover. After reading about Emu oil we're hoping applying Emu oil to his temples will "wake up" his follicles. Hopefully, they're not dead. It will be a while before we know if the Emu oil works or not.

For me the garlic taken internally and applied topically stopped the excessive shedding I experienced due to using MegaTek.

For my SO the Saw Palmetto helped stopped the excessive shedding and thinning he's experiencing. He applies it topically and takes it internally.

Sorry about not clarifying myself in my earlier post.

I agree with SS, I take Sprio also and I have grown a new head of hair just about. Megatek and other supplements has even grown my edges back!! Right now I am just leaving my hair alone and letting it grow! :yep:
