My Yarn Braids/Genie Locs Pics!!!!

I did some yarn braids/genie locs in my hair. I started on them Thursday night and finished Monday night. It took forever and a day with breaks, but it was worth it. I really love them. I contemplated doing them for a while, and I am glad that I did. They are very soft and pliable which makes styling very easy. They also seem to hold on to moisture very well. I used 100% acrylic yarn in brown that I got from JoAnns fabric store for $5.49 plus tax for a lb of yarn

Here's my regimen while in braids:

  • Moisturize daily to twice a day. I have been using V05 moisture milks with water in a spray bottle. So far so good; I used this before when wearing half wigs.
  • Spray with Chi Keratin Mist twice a week
  • Spritz with Ayurveda tea daily to every other day.
  • Wash weekly to every 10 days and deep condition over night.
  • Redo the edges every 3 weeks to monthly.
  • Sleep in a satin cap.

The pics are in my fotki and my blog.

ETA: This the yarn I used. It was on sale for $5.49 I believe the regular price is $7.49

You must use 100% acrylic yarn for yarn braids. Please do not use cotton or wool. Cotton is drying and wool will lock your hair

You did a really great job!! I just did my own kinky twists, so I KNOW that was a lot of work. I love the updo.

Nice job that came out really nice, you couldnt tell it was a DIY job. If i did some it would NOT look like that. I really like that big chunky french braid!

OMG it is a lot of work. I don't think I will be braiding my hair up myself for a long time. I don't really trust others because they are too tough or braid too tight.

Thanks, believe me I mad the front part look a lot neater than back. I did the front with smaller parts than the back. By the time I got to the back; I was tired and just started parting any old kind of way, LOL. :lachen:

Gosh Girl! You definitely did a wonderful job on yr braids. I have some in but mine are a lot bigger. I just hate the thought of taking them out being so small. But I must commend you on yr dedication and determination to do them so well. And they are uniform too. Kudos to you they look gorgeous. When I first read yr post and saw how long it took you to do them I was like dang it took her forever. But seeing them I see why!:yep::cheers:

But I want to tell you at first when I did mine in Dec 09 I purchased my yarn at Hancocks fabrics and I think they were like 4.99 ea. But I went to Walmart the second go round and found the 100% acrylic in black and the extra thick yarn for 2.99. Needless to say I stocked up. Just thought I would share that with you to save some money.

Again, Beautiful job!

Thanks :). I can't lie I did think about giving up. The braiding all the way down past my hair is what took so long. It felt like I was never gonna finish. After a couple of days when I had the front done; I just threw on my satin cap and then put on a pretty scarf like a headband to rest. Life doesn't stop if your hair isn't done.

I did the front my smaller than the back. I used 2 strands of yarn for the front and 3 strands for the back. They actually aren't uniform in size, but you can't really tell. I figured it was worth all of the countless hours of braiding. The weather is cold and I am trying to really protect my hair.

Thanks, I was going to check out Walmart, but I went to JaAnns instead. They also had the $2.49 yarn, but I got that one for $5.49 for a pound of yarn. That was a good deal.

Nice! How do you get yours to look like braids?

I just redid mines over christmas break. It took me three days and they are SUPER tiny. I wonder if it's cause you used brown and the black is harder to see. Yarn braids are so hard to do based on time, but you did it! Your done and your hair is protected and hidden for the next month or two. Get ready for the growth!

Thanks, yours were nice as well. Idk, I just braided it normally. It may be because the brown yarn shows the braid pattern more. I picked up black, but I just don't look good with black hair. I was kind of scared that the brown would look funny, but not any more. I love it and the color looks really good next to my skin.

I absolutely L:love:VE it and I seriously *must* try this style sometime this year...its gorgeous....you did an amazing job....love the frechbraid.....its stunning:yep:

I LOVE the way it looks like dreads....sooooo cute.

I would want to do them really long like MBL length....do they sell that length? Or do you add hair to make it longer?...I have to try this.

Aw thanks BMP :) Yeah this style would look really good on you. Just be prepared to be braiding your hair forever.

That came out absolutely beautiful. My cousin just did hers from Sat to Mon...I may have to give her a shot after seeing your pics!

You can cut the yarn as long as you want your braids to be. You'll need more yarn, though, since more will be needed for each braid.

Beautiful job OP...how many strands did you use? I like the fact that it's full but not too full...they look smaller than mine did though...

I used two pieces of yarn for the front part of my head and I used 3 pieces for the rest of my head. It is really full to me. I don't like the way the look down. I made the front part of my head fuller than the back. I got tired when doing the back so the parting got bigger. I figured the front would cover as well. To me they are too full to wear down. I like out of my face. The next time I will do them a little bigger so I can wear them down some.

I ABSOLUTELY LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE YOUR YARN BRAIDS!!

Thanks :)
