...For maximum growth?
If other, what?
What was your starting length and your length now using these protective style methods?
What was your hair regimen when wearing these protective styles?

I voted weave. I've had bad experiences with braids. Weaves take less time and are also less expensive and last longer for me anyway. They work for me. I just recently BCed so I don't have much progress to report. They did help my hair grow when I was relaxed though. My weave regimen is basically to wash and dc the weave once a week. I let it airdry. I spray the cornrows with braid spray so they don't get dry. I leave it in about 8 weeks. That's about it.

I wear my hair in all sorts of briads. This is definatly a protective style for me I dont have to comb or mainpulate my hair in any way except to put it in a braid or pont tail.

I didn't vote because I would have chosen BOTH weaves and braids as protective styling, low manipulation and therefore, maximizing growth opportunities.

It makes sense to me to do braids in the warmer months (depending on the type of braids, your scalp is more exposed and can therefore, stay cooler) and then weaves in the cooler months (to protect the head from the cold).

I use weave AND braids to grow my hair
Starting lenght:shoulder; Now: almost Brastrap!
I moisturise almost every other day, low poo/cowash once every week, deep conditionning every 6 weeks (after removing braids/weave)!

I like box braids that are not too tight, medium-sized and I also never get too many because they can be heavy.

I wash my hair too often to wear braids - although I love the look!

I vote for WEAVES - I can have any look while still pampering my real hair.

I voted 'Other'...

No weaves! No braids!

Your hair will grow and retain length without weaves and braids! Save your money...

If you want to keep it in a style where you can leave alone or protect your hair per se, wear twists and braids using your own hair, or wear it in its shrunken state. ;)

i've never worn a weave, but i have worn braids with my own hair and with extensions. i get good growth from both. but really any style you find where you leave your hair alone for weeks will help your hair grow. it's all about retaining the length w/ low manipulation :)

co-sign... Braids only!
Weaves don't work for me. I spent $400 on one and it messed up my edges and everything else. It was cute but... Never again!

Ditto. I've worn braid extensions and also worn my hair in braids and twists without extensions. As long as you're leaving your hair alone you retain length.

Neither for me. I have noticed that protective styling (twists and braids w/ no extentions for either) washing weekly, and leaving them in for atleast a month. I make sure to use good leave-in's too. I have noticed that just leaving my hair alone, that I am retaining just as much if not more growth that I was getting from using extensions. Plus my own hair isn't heavy, and I can wash it every day if I want.

I love to have my own hair done up in cornrows, i find my hair is always in a better condition because of it. Right now im in extentions though.

Like others say, when the hair is in a protective style like extentions or weaves, the hair benefits from low manipulation plus it saves time in the morning getting ready for work :)

I would say neither. Micros are the reason I have no hairline and weaves whilst they are not so bad still aggravate the hairline situation.

My advice - get your self some high quality lace or lace half wigs and bobby pin them behind the hairline and cornrow your hair into a nice design for 2-3 weeks at a time an co-wash and DC in the cane rows and take them out every 2-3 weeks for a big DC.

This will allow for mininum manipulation and combing and also allow you to mimic the benefits of say a weave or braids without sacrificing your hairline for growth. You can also get to your scalp for massages, DCing, growth aids etc.

It depends on the kind of braids and how you care for them...if you care for your braids (and are you talking braids with OR WITHOUT extensions-cause thats weave too).....braids that are too small tend to cause breakage....but a weave can too if not cared for properly......

As far as retention of hair growth....cause to me hair growth is genetically determined....sew-ins are great because the hair is braided down and covered.....I don't like caps (aka quick weave?) because depending on who does it and if glue is involved you can get breakage....I am going for a full-head sew-in soon.....and I can't wait cause my hair will be tied down for 6 weeks.....

Weave AND braids,..braids in the front,.. curly weave in the back :yep: Braids also protect my front as compared to weave alone where i leave out maybe a 2x2 inch box and some edges... and these get heat damaged with flat ironing and such. With braids i can also go to the gym, swim, anything. If time is an issue or you want a fuller look,.. do the braids in the front,.. weave in the back... I posted pics of that somewhere on here :yep: This combo is soooo low maintenance.. i can wash as often as i like, etc.

Weave on the other hand... if you buy a certain type of hair its in no way cheaper than braids. It looks fly as hell though... and if you get a good stylist everyone thinks its your hair (although I could care less if they know or not). Its chic...I dont worry about scaring the eurofolks. But for me its more expensive and more maintenance. I do luv that I can flat iron the hell out of it and it not matter. I end up washing less though and leaving that job for the professionals. (180 hair, 150 dollar install, 50 dollar subsequent washes)
