Just a few questions
- Did you use the end of the rat-tail comb like the lady in the Breslin video
- Would you suggest using the synthetic kinky hair (as you did) or the kanakelon kinky hair
- Did you attached the hair the was she did in the video (they slip when I try it that way)
- Any tips for others who would like to do their own kinky twists?

Please reply. I refuse to go back to another braid salon and this weekend I want to do something to my hair (I was thinking twists) because I'm at week 9 and have enough growth for it to be giving me hell, but not enought to warrant a touch up.

Don't mean to talk too long, but your albums are the best! I've been practicing (using mayonnaise) applying relaxer the way you do in your album.

It's natural, not forced, just doing their thing and chillin.

I'm assuming you're talking about partings. Yes I did. I have 2 bone combs www.hairsense.com which I got from ebay I used the tail of my large bone comb to part initially and then used my small fine tooth bone comb to perfect the partings.

I had a TOUGH time in getting the right hair. I have at least 4 black hair shops right on my doorstep and not one of the stocked this hair. I had to get it in Brixton (SW London) The hair in my album is the hair I used by Sensationnel. I'm assuming this is similar to what I've heard on here known as Marley type hair. I first attempted to use Kinky kanekalon hair but it wasn't coarse enough and didn't 'hold'. A lady came up to me in the train station wanting to know where I got the hair from and she used Kanekalon by the looks of it and said it unravelled in the water when she sealed it and had to secure the ends with rubber bands. The hair I used stays put just like natural hair when twisted you don't even need to really seal this hair with the water. Even when you trim it it doesn't unravel. Just twist it and leave it.

I had to watch this time and time again, and do 'sample' twists as practice. But yes I got it, they way she did it on the DVD.The trick I found was when seperating the hair in 3, attach your own hair to the middle pieceand twist that under first, pulling it slighty taut so you have a firm base for the braid/stroke twist. They won't be as tight as when you usually braid your hair because you only braid down once and then start twisting. But they will hold. I find they do stay as you're twisting each strand of the twists before crossing over and completing each twist (sounds complicated but she explains this on the DVD). If like me you're relaxed don't straighten your hair or apply any product on each hair strand before braiding, this may result in more slippage. Saturate your hair with braid spray after the style is complete, I also scrunch S-Curl into the twists. I've taken some down to re-do and even after a hair wash the hair is very moisturised, even with this coarse type of hair I'm using.

- Any tips for others who would like to do their own kinky twists?
YES! Start as early as you can, over a weekend. If you have kids send them overseas, put them in the army, navy, marines or something just have no one around to mess with you. You'll get tired, frustrated and really want to give up. Stock up on food, beverages, DVD's (you'll need tons of these) Go for something long like Lord of the Rings, The Godfather Trilogy or a TV DVD box set. Something looooooooooong. I'd suggest you taking a day off whether it be the friday to start, or the monday to finish, cause I had to take the monday off work. What took so long were the partings, because I had no one to help me and they needed to be straight so I had to keep going upstairs to check them in the mirror. Very time consuming. When you part off a row, section what will be your parts twirl them in a single twist as to not get mixed up in hair from the next section. Do that across that entire row and clip them up. As you are braiding/twisting your hair, just release the next section from the clip, unravel, add hair and begin braiding/twisting. this saves time having to keep checking them in the mirror to make sure the parting are straight. If you have someone on hand to part for you, you'll be done a lot quicker that I was. Don't make the parts too small. Check my first attempt compared to the second completed in my album. Make them 1.5cm in width, don't worry if some in the back are sectioned off larger cause when you part doing the brick effect they will stagger and fall down so you don't see the partings. See pic of bricks. You will part like this. Where the bricks are see this as sections of hair, where the line underneath and above that section of hair is where the braid will fall, giving you a full look, hiding all the parts.

Yes, but you don't really need to. You can just braid it up, spray with a lil braid spray, H2O (elasta qp), surge, whatever's waterbased leave it to dry over night and you'll get fabulous waves. The next time I won't bother with the not water, I didn't really need to do it.

May add some more...gotta run out for an hour!!!

I'm recovering from foot surgery and will be on medical leave from work for a few weeks, so this is a great time for me to learn and perfect my kinky twist technique. Thank you for sharing!!! LOL, yes it's me. I'm so happy you braided your own hair so beautiful. To me, I think the best benefit of the DVDs are people being able to do your own hair because it's just so expensive these days. If you just take the time to learn you can save thousands over a lifetime. I still to this day do my own Micro Braids. If you have any questions feel free to PM me!

When you get the hair PLEASE get the right type. I bought the wrong type 3 times They type you want feels very rough, don't let this put you off It holds moisture well. People on here have called it Marley type hair I used the Senationnel brand. I found it very hard to find.

Thanks LondonDiva!!!! This is great, especially the info on the synthetic vs. kanakelon hair. I'm going to postpone doing the kinky twist until next weekend. Gotta find the hair and I bought a few of the bone combs, so hopefully they'll get here by then (no I'm not a pj, I have been looking for good combs, see my k-cutter thread ). I'm also going to print this, memorize it, watch the kinky twist dvd a few more times, and get some dvds and stuff for next weekend. You started this thread just when I need info! Thanks again.
