Washing once a week and heat, is that damaging?

I just got back from the hair salon where I recieved a relaxer and a flat iron. I self-relaxed my hair on June 3, and ofcourse I under processed in the middle. Unprocessing my hair caused even more damage because.... I already had some breakage in the middle of my head. So, I've been really good about not using too much heat and trying to strecth out my relaxers. But I couldn't stop the breakage. I went to the salon this morning and I had previously dicussed the breakage with my new stylist, so we both agreed to cut the hair to remove damage ends.. I've never consistantly gone to a hair stylist, never ever. So, now I'm at the point where I have the new shorter hairstyle and I can't really do a braid out or twists out, those were my hairstlyes of choice before. I kinda feel like I should keep going to her until my hair grows out some.

Okay, now I'll get to the real deal... I was told by my stylist that she would wash my hair and flat iron each week for $25.00, and she would use my own products. I was thinking of going to her every week until december. I hoping to retain atleast 3-4 by then if not more.

Do you think that washing once a week and using heat will cause way too much damage?

Washing itself is not damaging depending how gentle you are when combing and how harsh your products are. Heat itself can be damaging if done to often. If your hair is already damage, I would put a hold on the heat. :)

I actually think you would be okay as long as you were dried under a dryer. I think blowing and flat ironing would lead to damage if done weekly.

I don't think it will be too damaging IF the stylist is also giving you good treatments to combat the damaged hair and not scorching the hair with the heat. When I found a great stylist who was into healthy hair she cut my hair, probably not as short as yours because she could still rollerset, but I was going to her every week and my hair thrived. I think it depends on the products you use as well. I don't want to recommend any because I know all is different for each head. Is there any way your stylist could rollerset your hair instead of flat ironing it every week? OR Is it possible that you can go every other week, so the heat is not as frequent?

Before my next appointment,I plan on letting her know that I don't want to use that much heat on my hair. I was skeptical about using heat once a week, I don't know if that's the best thing for my hair. However she did sit me under the dryer for 30 mins today, using the blow dryer for about a minute to comb out my hair.

I think I'm gonna to call her on Tuesday and let her know that I feel more comfortable doing a roller set each week opposed to flat ironing. I don't want the risk of too much damage on the ends.

I do look forward to bringing in my own hair products. I already mentioned some of the products I like to use. I also stressed the fact that I pre-poo my hair with EVOO before each wash so don't be surprise if I roll up in a shower cap.

Here are some of the products I like to use for washing and conditioning my hair.

-Kera Care Hydrating Detangling Shampoo
-Kera Care Humecto Creme Conditioner
- Sedal Milk and Honey Shampoo
- Aubrey'sOrganics GPB Conditioner
- Kukui Conditoning Shampoo
- Tropical Avocado Conditioner
-Miss Keyes 10 en 1
- EMERGENCEE- 1Xmonth
- Tropical Coconut Treatment

I don't know--those salon flat irons get pretty darn hot. I DO think that having one used on your hair weekly would be too much and would cause damage. Is there any way that she could roller set it for you? Maybe try getting it rollerset two weeks in a row and then every 3rd week, go with a flat ironed style.

I used to wash once a week and hot curl my hair on Sunday morning for church and never saw my hair grow. I started getting growth when I got rid of the heat except for drying under a hood dryer. Maybe once every other week with a roller set under the dryer or once a month for direct heat would be better for you since you already have some damage. Good Luck!

Supergirl-
Doing a rollerser two weeks in a row and then every 3rd week a flat ironded style is the best advice. Flat ironing once a week isn't gonna give me prevent growth and I'm afraid it's gonna mess up my ends. I plan on calling her on tuesday and letting her know that I really liked her service but I can't allow any one to use that much heat on my hair. Once a month with the flat iron is okay, but anything more than that might prevent me from coming back.

Don't doooo itttt!!! :ohwell: Sorry, I am allergic to hair stylists. Just don't trust them any farther than I can throw one. How short is your hair now? I think less heat you can use , and the more you can wet your hair (through washing c-washing), the better. She should deep, deep condition your hair each week if you are going to go to her. Or, you could even deep condition your hair the night before and have her use something mild like pine tar shampoo instead of a harsh shampoo. I am a firm believer that I had fried my hair to death blowdrying and curling each week. Now, I do it twice a month and the rest of the month, I do a bun. I wash and/or co-wash DAILY. My hair is so happy and at peace! And, when I am ready to blow dry and flat iron for a special occassion.....WATCH OUT DERE NOW! :) I just like my hair so much better when I started paying more attention to what it really needed and stopped worrying bout what everyone else thought it needed and what people THOUGHT I should do with it. "Wear your hair down more often!" You always got that BUN! But, they will not be there to help me when my hair starts thinning and breaking from being overworked and dry. Best of luck to you.
