Is it just me or am I the only one that after months of searching STILL can't find something to moisturize my hair? My hair is what you would call C-Napp (proudly). Are there any other 4b's or C-Napps that haven't found a moisturizer either? What have you been using so far that you are just "dealing with" until you find something better or something you used in the past the was completely awful?

(OR EVEN BETTER) What have you find that works wonders????

So far I have used:
all of "the juices" (my hair doesn't like glycerin apparently :nono:)
shea butter :nono:
Hairveda Moisture Milk :nono:
a lil conditioner to leave in :nono: (including anything HE, cholesterol, Suave, Vo5, alllllll the cheapies)

I HAVE to find something soon! The summer heat is KILLING (drying) my hair!!

Wow. I don't know what advice to offer.

What does your hair feel like after moisturizing? Is it hard, brittle, crunchy, etc?

Maybe you could up your DC regimen, or baggie to conpensate for not having a good enough moisturizer just yet. I felt the same until I found out that water based vs. oil based is what I needed.

Since nothing works for you, I really think that you have porosity issues that need to be checked.

i use Qhemet BRBC as my moisturizer. the moisture lasts up to a week on my hair, with me wearing twists the first half of the week, and a twistout the rest until wash day. ♥

I'm Newly natural; BC'd 4-04-2010; hair currently 3" and I'm 4Z, C-napp.

I've tried lots of products and have the following in rotation.

Leave in conditioners -
KBB Hair Milk
Jasmine's Bath and Beauty Shea butter conditioning rinse/leave-in.
Afroveda coconut moisture milk hair conditioner
(All three of these are great).

Moisturizers -
Qhemet's Amla and Olive Heavy Cream (stay moisturized for several days)
Shescentit Seyani butter (stay moisturized for several days)
Afroveda Cocolatte Moisture Mask (stay moisturized for several days)/

I DC once a week with either Hairveda's Sitrinillah, Shescent it Banana Brulee, Afroveda's Ashlii Amala Red Raspberry Intense Deep Conditioning Hair Mask or KBB's Luscious Locks Hair Mask. I add things to my conditioners to make them more moisturizing and nourishing (whatever I need at the moment) and steam.

Finally, I spray my hair everyday with either Komaza Califa Moisturing spray or Darcy's Botanicals' Herbal Tea Leave-In Conditioning Spritz or Qhemet's Karkady Tea Replenishing Mist. I spray my hair before braiding every night. The best of the three is the Komaza Califa Moisturing spray. This stuff melts any tangles. The other two are very good, also. But I like Komaza best.

Thank you soooo much! Do you have a fotki? I would love to look.

And I guess I've been trying to do 'cheap' with my hair by buying mainly commercial products. I'm going to take the plunge and buy me some QB this weekend.

Thanks again. :drunk:

After going natural, I experienced a lot of dryness and eventually realized part of the problem was my water. I live in an apartment and our water is the worst! (very hard)...which so drying and harsh on our hair.

To test the theory, I bought a bottle of distilled water, and a water spritzer, filled it w/my distilled water, and started using that on my hair. The difference was immediate! Then my products behaved better on my hair. I eventually invested in a filter for our shower head (to filter out the hard water). I get the aquasana kind. I can always tell when it's time to replace, as my hair starts to get dry, and my products don't work as well.

I hope this helps.

I've tried a lot and lately I've been reading about breast milk and KY Jelly. I kind of thought it was silly and I wouldn't do it, but I saw the results and it worked so I can't really say much.

My hair is so moisturized the curl pattern has loosened up a lot. It's my holy grail for sure.

I'm natural and just like you I had a hard time in the very beginning. My hair is what people may call "4b" and I have practically no curl pattern. However, my hair is very porous so my hair love water base products and it doesn't mind silicone, polypetides, wheat germ, vitamin E and A ingredients. I did use for a short while the Olive oil spray by Palmers but I only used it on my ends. Since my hair is very porous the shampoo and conditioner that I use also plays a vital role.

Currently I use a leave-in conditioner by Regis and it is the best thing that ever happen to me and I will not switch it. I urge you to look into white people products and see what they offer. I don't think your hair needs any deep conditioner or protein treatments, but you know more than I do. Try shampoos and conditioners such as Suave humectant, Aveeno Nourish and Moisturizer, or Motions lavish conditioning and moisture plus.

Do you moisturize your hair while its wet or dry and how often do you wash it. "4b" hair should be wash "frequently" because dirt actually dries it out and so can too much products.

I am a 4a/4b natural & here are my suggestions:

1. Jane Carter Solution Nourish & Shine
2. Hydratherma Naturals Daily Moisturizing Growth Lotion

Also:

I. DCing on dry hair

II. Steam treatments (you can use the home grown steam treatment method if you don't have a steamer)

III. Clarifying as needed so that your hair can absorb the goodness from your DCs

IV. Doing ACV rinses or using Roux Porosity Control to keep your cuticles flat & keep the moisture in your hair

I saw your post about trying to go the cheap route & use commercial products for your hair. That has never worked for me in terms of moisturizers; it's only made my hair drier.

HTH!

My natural hair didn't like much either. Water was by and large the best thing; just wetting it frequently. Try spritzing with rosewater 2x per day and sealing with a dab of avocado oil; this was the most effective for me when I was natural. Also using the Body Shop Honey Moisturizing Conditioner as a moisturizer was the best creamy moisturizer I found; those cheapies were ineffective for me also.

HEY SIS
looks like u have them all!!!!!
water=< nothing beats it, binds to the follicles....wet it, add your favorite oil....grab a curl bag....THE JHERI CURL BAG SHOULD BECOME UR BESTIE!!!
Qhemet's Amla and Olive Heavy Cream (stay moisturized for MONTHS!)

CLARIFY...CLARIFY...CLARIFY (this may be ur issue? product blocking your moisture??)

CONES??? most people's hair develops a build up very very fast.....<----clarify frequently or avoid them

did i say JHERI CURL BAG???? lmao....get it on now!

steamer!!! <---changes your hair life instantly

low sulfates....limit your use of any sulfates if ur have too much drying.....COWASH FREQUENTLY......low poo
BLEND SHEA BUTTER W/ YOUR FAVORITE NATURAL OIL....coconut oil?
acv rinses
if u clarify often....baggy frequently....any moisturizer will work.....none better than water tho

Hello is me your looking for?
I have been natural for awhile but i was weaving my hair. In feb i started doing wigs so i was more aware that my hair was really dry. I think what work was dc'ing my hair at least once a week, mosturizing and sealing. But what really works on my hair now is Qhemet's Amla and Olive Heavy Cream. A little goes a long way and it keeps the hair moisturized for several days. And i spray my hair every couple of days with Qhemet's Karkady Tea Replenishing Mist.

Curlee_Lurker, could I substitute some other kind of milk and get just as good results? I don't have access to breast milk.

I'm sure I have a tube of the jelly somewhere around here though.:look:

I wash my hair 2-4 times a week. I also moisturize wet and dry (I'll do wet one wash and dry the next). But thank you for the suggestions!!

Hey Tyra I suppose you could but my results have been better with human milk vs any other mammals. I tried cow, goat and dog but human milk has given the best results due to the enzymes in human breast milk.

You can coax yourself into lactating or use a donor bank. Here's some helpful links:

hey...
I happen to have a bottle of breast milk in my frezzer. It's been in there a year though. I just couldnt bring myself to toss it even though my kids have been done nursing for a while.

How did you use/apply it? like a rinse?

Glycerin doesn't work for my hair either. I live in a dry climate, so it has the opposite effect.

But I have found a moisture solution for my hair. To God be the glory!!! Because my hair was dryyyyyyy baaaaaaaaaby!!

Ok, I use a spritz of Taliah Waajid's Protective Mist Bodifier (1/2), mixed with aloe vera juice (1/4), and rose water (1/4). I twist my hair with Qhemet Biologics Amla and Olive Heavy Cream (though my strands are fine and I am discovering that my hair likes the Burdock Root Buttercream better) and a tiny bit if Oyin's Shine and Define.

Oh, and if you haven't tried Kimmaytube's Leave-In, it is SENSATIONAL!!! I use Shescentit's Coco Cream Leave-in as my base (2 tablespoons), with Aloe Vera juice (2 tablespoons), Castor Oil (2 teaspoons), and Jojoba Oil (2 teaspoons). It smoothes my hair and makes it super soft!!

I band my 4b hair with this leave-in and when it dries, I put it in medium sized twists with the spritz, Qhemet, and Shine & Define.

I use S-Curl, Carefree Curl Gold, or Silk Elements Mega Silk Hair Moisturizing Leave In.

All of these things work on my hair.

The best leave-in for me is just vegetable glycerin mixed with water and then sealed with coconut oil. Commercial conditioners just don't do the trick for me.
Care Free Curl :nono:
S Curl :nono:
Hawaiin Silky :nono:
Garnier Fructis :ohwell: wasn't bad
HE Long Term Relationship :ohwell: I would have to say this would be the best commercial conditioner I used.

If your hair doesn't like glycerin, then maybe you should try HE leave-ins.

Make sure you seal with an oil or a butter. That really helps to keep natural hair moisturized all day, just moisturize and seal every night.

If your hair hates shea butter like mine, you might want to try a sulfate shampoo and then a good DC. Shea dries my hair out like crazy, it creates a film that doesn't allow moisture to penetrate my hair and my non sulfate shampoo doesn't remove it, so I get single strand knots and dry hair. For this reason I use oils instead of butters. I even avoid deep conditioners with butters listed in the ingredient list for this reason.

I also find that a light protein treatment every so often allows me to retain much more moisture.

Sometimes I use a pea size amount of my moisturizing deep conditioners on my ends instead of leave-ins.

Hope it helps.

At the bold, can you explain how you came to that conclusion? I ask coz seeing your list of no-nos echo my own, I'm tempted to bet my bottom dollar that either you haven't tried S Curl or you gave up too quickly.

Can you explain which juice you tried and how you used the juice? I feel I can change your mind about it. :poke:

Also, what's the weather like where you are or at the time you tried the juice?

Hey nonie. Thanks for chiming in.
I have tried S-Curl, Hawaiian Silky, CFC, glycerin and water mix.... and I think that's it... I think..
And maybe I didn't explain well but "juices" work well for my hair... well for the first few minutes, then it seems to "disappear". It's like my hair can only hold moisture for a few minutes and BAM it's gone like I never put anything in it. Or sometimes it'll be moisturized and then feel "crispy" at the ends.

Since my original post I have come to a conclusion that it is the water. I live in metro Atlanta and I'm almost positive the water here sucks. I think it's the water because for the first time two days ago I chelated with the ORS shampoo (it's the mustard colored one) and my hair felt AMAZING until I spritzed my hair with a scurl/water/glycerin mix which I added sink water to.

Does anyone know how much a water filter would be? Ugh... I'm already a broke college student... any way of getting around a water filter?

I just figure this out my after i dc with Beemine Beeutiful dc why my hair feels dry after i rinse it out. It have shea butter in it... I wonder if that could be the reason why... My hair also hate aloe vera gel Hawii Silky 24-1, He leave in, Care Free Curl ,Garnier Fructis, and it hate shea butter. I like to use Taliah Waajid's Protective Mist Bodifier and Qhemet Biologic Burdock Root Butter Cream.

I was hoping you'd say that coz that's what I suspected. I assume you apply it to damp hair right? When that water dries up, your hair seems to have soaked up the juice and feels dry and hard, right? That's the norm with S Curl. The ticket is to reapply to your now dry hair, plait it and baggy for the night. In the AM, your hair will be so soft and so moisturized, there'll be no need to apply anymore. In fact, as long as you plait your hair and baggy every night, you hair will continue to thank you...and you will be able to go for days w/o a need to re-moisturize.

Since my original post I have come to a conclusion that it is the water. I live in metro Atlanta and I'm almost positive the water here sucks. First and foremost, can you stop creating your own concoction and use the S Curl unadulterated? You're making my insides churn talking about spritzing your hair with some polluted S Curl. No wonder it's not working. :whyme:

Second, filters aren't that expensive. And you can get them at Home Depot. Finding one only get tricky if you have a weird shower head like mine which has the hose that hangs on a bracket. I had to get a special filter that goes into the handle. I see Lowes does have a shower handle filter: http://www.lowes.com/pd_169727-51915-HM5-CM-R_4294935907+4294837333_4294937087?productId=1217989

This website does brag about their filters but they're a bit more pricey: http://www.aquasanastore.com/aq-shower-filter.html
