I get weary of some of the things i have to do to my hair to keep in shape sometimes, like not combing and not brushing and sometimes i think it's hurting my me more, b/c in the end i get more tangles and therefore more lost hair :(
for some reason, i've been wanting to brush my hair so bad lately, lol, especially when it's not laying down like it should, or after i'm done airdrying and even though it's pulled back in a ponytail, you can see the strands going in all directions and it REALLY does NOT look cute...

I use my satin scarf to lay the hairs down and it does a really good job, but there are times when I need a QUICK FIX and i can't use my satin scarf, you know?

I wanna re-incorporate the hairbrush into my regimen again. I don't plan to use it often but for the times when i REALLY need it. I want to get a really really soft brush. You know those shoe brushes *i think they're made for shoes... even though i saw one at Metrobeauty* that feel like baby brushes... or just a baby brush by itself, so that I can smooth my hair back when i'm in DIRE need of a brush, so that I won't have the damage that comes with regular hair brushing.

Anyone here brushes? If so, is it damaging for you? If so, what type of brush do you use and how often do you use it?

I brush 1-2 times a day usually.
I use a big paddle brush.
I don't know if it's damaging, because my hair is pretty damaged already.

I bought a brush on Hairsense.com because they said it was so safe and gentle you could use in the shower.

But I'm not THAT impressed with it. Seems ordinary to me. But yesterday I started using it to style my hair... just a few strokes in the morning to blend curls ...because combs leave spaces and just aren't good for styling to me.
I've always used a bone comb or hard rubber with no seams... and they never negatively affect my hair ..well I use ones with a good amount of space between the teeth.

I only comb or brush my hair in the morning though (I condition wash daily so my the tools just glide through my hair w/o snagging), and throughout the day just let it be. If I look in the mirror, and my hair needs some sprucing ...I just finger it a little.

I never brush or comb dry hair unless it's within an hour or two of washing (then it still is very detangled and moist). Otherwise, I'd hit a few snagged and damage my hair.

I brush my hair once a day, I've never experienced any damage just by brushing it.

I use boar brushes, a round brush and a wave brush.

I brush every single morning to detangle and distribute product.

I use the Denman D83 and I have absolutely not damage from it. My hair is very healthy so I don't see a problem with brushing.

For me, the benefits of brushing are distribution of natural oils, and it removes a lot of shed hair that my comb doesn't catch. It increases the shine in my hair, but I only brush about once a week.

I brush 2X a day. I have a regular ol' boar bristle brush. No name brand, nothing special. It's not damaging because I only brush when I have some kind of product in my hair. I've experienced no breakage or shedding.

Hey CarLita

I understand what you're saying as far as hesitancy. One of the first things I did early on with trying to have good styling/combing, etc. tools was to buy two boar's bristle brushes, one square & one rounded/oval.

Interestingly enough. . .those are the two things I very rarely reach for nowadays. Mainly due to how I wear my hair (I've practically given up ponytails which was one of the main reasons I felt I needed to "tame").

Here's a trick though that I held onto from way back in the day. Honestly, I don't even remember why I did this but moisten the brush bristles before you run it through your hair. I used to use some oilsheen spray but I've used water, oil or some light conditioning creme hairdress, too, depending upon what style I was wearing or more importantly what was ever within reaching distance on the countertop. :p

Hope you find something that works out for you!

I brush only when to get flyaways tolay str8, which is very rarely, more recently since needing a perm.... I also brush a little when do a wet pony to make it extra smooth, but it is one of those rounded brushes, so it rolls when I brush, as to not pull any hair out..

I brush everyday for touch ups during the day. I use a Conair boar's bristle brush (6.99@Target). It looks just like a Mason Pearson.

Well I haven't been wearing my hair straight that often since june, so when I'm not in braids or a weave, often times my hair is pulled back in a bun and I brush it every day to style it. Other than that I'm wearing my hair in a bantu knot out (is that a phrase?), anyways I don't believe that it damaging to my hair.

I use a soft boar bristle brush and a paddle brush and I use these mostly when I have a lot of new growth....when my hair has just been texturized I use a wide toothed comb mainly.

If you're using a boar bristle brush, it's better to get a really soft one....I used to have a hard one and I soaked it in hot water daily to get it soft but it's still quite hard so I gave it away as it's better for short hair/short waves.

So, a soft boar bristle brush for smoothing down your hair and a paddle brush for the ends if they are tangled up.

I brush my hair (edges only) when I wear a wet ponytail/bun. I put product on the edges, gather in a ponytail, brush edges and wrap a scarf on it. My brush is a really soft boar bristle brush and I honestly don't get any damage from it. Brush damage usually comes from using a brush that's too hard and yanking it all through your hair. You should be able to tell if you're damaging it or not though. HTH~

AT my house, all we have are those REALLY hard boar bristle brushes  i remember using them before I came to LHCF once in a while when my new growth was crazy... they DO damage the hair. A month or two after i joined, i used it again and the next morning, i saw shorter hairs in the front of my head and i was like oh hell to the naw... and haven't used a brush since April.

When I go to metrobeauty in the hairbrush section, i try to find one that's EXTREMELY soft (baby brushes) and I did find one but I didn't buy it. The other ones, I'd run them on the back of my hand, and if it made the back of my hand feel irritated and hurt, imagine what it could do to my hair, so i never purchased one.

I have been using wide combs for months now. hmm i dont know, if i find a baby brush (the bristle is so soft and you can hardly feel it running over your skin) then i will buy it, and keep it there for EMERGENCIES ONLY. If i dont' need it, i won't use it. I promise :)
