I'm just curious. I'm planning on getting a weave installed this week, but since I'm quite new to them, I'm not quite sure how long is best to leave it in for. My real hair is annoying me right now , so I would like to have the weave in for as long as possible to enjoy the lovely weave hair, but hopefully not too long to seriously matt or damage my hair. So yeah, I'm just like to know what you ladies do :look:

And just another question to add if you can answer: How safe is it to go swimming in a weave? Because if it's really not recommended then I just won't go swimming. Thanks.

You should go no more than 6 weeks. I really don't even know how people push it to 8. I personally can't go more than 2 weeks the install doesn't feel right, idk it just doesn't feel as tight it starts to feel like a weave! and I use a net so that the wefts feels sturdier and it keeps me from taking care of my hair underneath the way I want to so that's why they have to come down after 1-2 weeks... but then again I do my own installs so I can afford to take them down when I get the itches and just need to feel my scalp or take care of my hair (DC, clarify, etc.). People who invest in weaves as a PS though keep them in up to 8 weeks but make sure they take care of their hair underneath.

To answer your question, you can go swimming, just make sure you clarify your hair underneath with an applicator tipped bottle using diluted shampoo to get rid of the chlorine from the pool water, and proceed to condition and such. HTH!

Depending on the hair I use will determine how long I keep my weave. Cheap hair will get 4-6 weeks better quality hair will last longer 8 weeks but I have went 3 months before.

I keep my weaves anywhere from 8-12 weeks, never less than 8 weeks. My weave stays pretty tight all the way until the take down. I wash and condition once/week with no problems of matting at all. FYI I'm natural. HTH

I usually go 4-6 weeks and that's only because I'm bored or anxious to see my real hair. I know my sew-ins could stay in longer. With my current install, I'm really trying to push for 8 weeks. It will be the longest I've ever had a weave in.

I voted 8-10 weeks...February to April was the longest I kept an install in. It was Goddess Remi body wave in #1. It was really good and could have gone longer but I get full sew ins and as the hair gets older and my new growth comes in, you start to see my hair poppin up along my edges, my edges grow so fast its crazy....and its not all sheeny and silky like the Remi lol, so thats when I take my hair down! If I had some weave that blended really well with my natural hair I would keep it in 3 to 4 months but no longer!

You may want to consider wearing half wigs if you're not quite sure about weaves yet. That was the only way I can work up the nerve to wear a weave and not want it out of my head in merely a week.

I disagree with some of the advice given in this thread. I would check out this thread by Edinese:

There is a lot of information in this thread and there are responses from a lot of members on the forum. HTH.

I was thinking the same thing. That is a great thread!

I've left my weave in (cheap brands) for 4-5 weeks, and moderately priced weave up to 12 weeks. I have yet to spend more than $60/pack. I am also natural and have never worried bout matting or tangles. I co-wash/shampoo'd my scalp 1-2x a week, made sure I used a braid spray and used EVCO on my natural hair under the weave.

That's OK, I've already been wearing a half wig since February, and I'm all ready to try something new now :yep:. And I'm sure I won't get bored of it as it will be how I'd want my real hair to be anyway :)

I'm new to weaves this year. But I've had 3 installs with no problems of tangling/matting and I've retained alot of length. The first one I left in for 8 wks, the second - 10 wks, the third - 12 wks.

I used Halley's Curls Creole Curly on the last two installs, and that hair is quality so it held up. I can go another install for the winter actually.

I always leave mine in for at least 10wks. The goal is always 12+ wks though. Usually Im dying to take it out by the 12th week so I rarely get beyond this point. I never had any problems with matting or tangling. Leaving my installs in for a longer amount of time has helped me to retain nearly all of my growth over the last year. I grew from CBL to MBL+.

when i used to get sew ins i would wear them 6-8 weeks, but i have since stopped doing these because it was hard for me to moisturize my actual hair underneath like i wanted to. Also a tip i learned was to pour detangler on your braids 1-2 days before sew in removal for easier takedown to prevent tangles and make braid removal easier

I have been going for 4-5 weeks I would like to keep this one in longer but the hair is shedding. I figured I should just wash it and braid it and wear a braid out on the weave in order to hold me over for 2 more weeks. This install was done on8.31 so if I go to Oct 15 that would be 6 weeks.

it will be a month next week for my bobraz...i know im keeping it in atleast until october 30th...i won a $150 credit for halleys curls on twitter and if they come out with their 1/2 wigs before my credit expires im getting that, but if not then im getting some creole wavy wefts and i'll probably keep that in for 6-8 weeks before taking it out and reinstallinh...i can reuse this bobraz now that i know how to reduce shedding, and i have some left over, so idk i might save the HC hair till the new year if i get it

when i used to have my weaves done and paid for, i would wear them at least 6 wks. Now I do my own and change it every 2 weeks, with an Ayurvedic treatment and DC at each takedown. Before i put it in i liberally put Vatika oil on my scalp + hair. i find this has greatly reduced the dryness of my hair at takedown :yep:

I voted for 6-8 weeks. I usually take mine down right at 6 weeks, but the longest I have gone is 7 weeks. My hair grows very fast with weaves and they start looking a hot mess right around the 6 week mark.

I've had in this weave for 9 weeks now :). And judging by some of the answers in here, it's probably safe enough for me to keep on going for even longer. Maybe I'll do 12 weeks? The hair is holding up pretty well at the moment, that I don't feel like it needs removing right now :D.

Thank you all for your responses :yep:

i wash my hair underneath every 2 weeks. i also use wild growth light oil moisturizer. no it dosn't stink, it smells like citrus fruits, sort of. ")

Same here! I went up to 3 months recently. I was so scared, but I used a lot of conditioner/time to make sure I didn't lose a lot of hair. I was also careful to get rid of all the shed hair before washing it.

3-4 weeks. I always start itching to wash and condition my own hair. I enjoy the feel of my hair when I'm conditioning it.

I always shoot for 12.

If I get bored around 8 weeks then I take it out at 10
