sylver2 Did you have to make me come back to tell you too to please answer the questions since you indeed fall under those who've waited longer than a year to trim?

Can you please answer the questions and post pics that show the change that occurred in the span of time you went a year w/o dusting.

TIA

sounds like my hubby. It makes it harder. At least we don't have to be all obsessed about it. We know they love us regardless. :)

@Nonie OK here are pictures of my first trim (BC 9/2007) and then 2 years later when I reached MBL (12/2009). As you can see my hair did grow, it was healthy, but it was uneven in Dec 2009 so that's why I cut it in Jan 2010. But for the most part I was able to retain lots of length for the 2 years and 3 months that I did not trim my hair.

First picture - Jan 2008 4 months after my BC
Sec picture - My curls 4 months after my BC
Third Picture - My hair a few minutes after I did the BC. I could not put it in a ponytail.
4th picture - My hair 2 years later

During my aggressive hair growing days, I dust and search&destroy for 3 years. I never took off more than 1 inch (if that) at a time. I would dust with every relaxer and search&destroy when I used heat.

1. Do you have coarse or fine strands? Medium - Coarse

2. When was the last time you trimmed? About 2 months ago

3. How long was your hair after that trim or if you have never trimmed, how long was your hair a year or two ago? Waistlength

4. How long is your hair now? Waistlength

5. Please post two or more photos of your hair
Tons of Pics Here

I love your post Boston' great progress & beautiful hair!!!

I like the topic OP!
I have coarse/thick hair. Natural 3b/c
This year I plan on NO trims.... I cut in November. I from hip to just at waist with layers & a v hemline. I love the cut, because it is very thick and falls in place effortlessly - but I miss having length in the front. So, I am protective styling this entire year and will not be cutting/trimming. I will search and destroy if I see knots...
So far 4 months later - hair is still thick, ends are still nice. But I have been tucked away in twists, and will be in a sew in until April (thus no pics of recent hair) I avg. 5." per month so this should put me right past hip by the end of the year.
Here is a before Cut in braid out waves, after cut (layers bun waves), recent...TBA ... because I am in a sew in.
To protect my ends, I deep condition when I switch styles. Glycerin spray 2 x's a day.

  1. Do you have coarse or fine strands? Fine strands
  2. When was the last time you trimmed? Maybe Dec 2009 or Jan 2010
  3. How long was your hair after that trim or if you have never trimmed, how long was your hair a year or two ago? Collar bone?
  4. How long is your hair now? inch and a half from APL
  5. Please post two or more photos of your hair (preferably stretched or straightened) showing your hair's progress while on this regimen (Please date the before and after) sorry no pix hair's in a weave till May
  6. What regimen do you use to protect your ends and keep them in good shape? (I just added this so folks who had to come back, you didn't omit any questions; I'm the one who's at fault for not putting it in in the first place. I beg your pardon.) My main reason for not trimming is that I don't seem to know the difference btw trim and cut and I don't trust anyone with scissors around my head.
I don't have a particular regimen just for my ends. I left my hair out all through 2010 so decided to protective style all this year so in a weave right now I'll alternate these with fusion extensions.

I wash and DC once a week. Attempt to put braid spray on my cornrows 2ce a week, Moisturise and seal left out hair with Giovanni Direct and olive oil , castor oil or morrocan oil. I BKT every 2-3 months and colour inbetween, also do APhogee 2 step whenever I take out my hair.

BTW the last inch or so of my hair is thinner than at the roots, but I won't cut till I'm an inch past apl the tapering helps my hair blend better.

Not to discount anyone's progress, I do have a question though. Can we hear from more 4a/b course but fine stranded participants? I think that the natural texture of 4a/b hair is more like velcro on fabrics (ie it sticks in and on) which, IMO, has an effect on retention in general.

Haven't seen any fine-stranded ladies yet...
*sigh*
Oh well...
Hopefully some will chime in! I have a sort of similar plan to Charz... I S&D 2-3 times a year when I straighten but don't plan to do a full out trim til I get to MBL in December to even out my bottom layer. My ends definitely aren't even, but they aren't split or knotted either, so I'll just hope for the best. :)

My nape is fine but most of my head is medium to coarse. :look:

I am APL now, I dont do length checks often enough to know what my length was last year. I do the occasional Search and Destroy. I just try to keep it moisturized, in a protective style, off of my shoulders and hope for the best.

This thread is great! Thank you Nonie and thank you to all the responders. I'm officially puting down the scissors. I find i'm only gaining like 3-4 inches a year because i'd trim/cut with nearly every relaxer. I relax every 2-3mos - the math isn't in my favor for serious retention.

It Always Been About Hair!
HI NONIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next month will be one year since my trim in April 2011. Check siggy for pic comparison. I should have an update by this weekend but I'm holding out until June because of the HYH 2012 challenge. Don't know how long I can hold out for though. :nono:

Do you have coarse or fine strands? COARSE
When was the last time you trimmed? APRIL 2011
How long was your hair after that trim or if you have never trimmed, how long was your hair a year or two ago? IT WAS DAMAGED APL FOR MANY MANY YEARS.
How long is your hair now? 2 INCHES PASS MY DEC SIGGY PIC
Please post two or more photos of your hair (preferably stretched or straightened) showing your hair's progress while on this regimen (Please date the before and after) I'M IN THE HYH CHALLENGE BUT THE SIGGY SHOULD BE A GOOD COMPARISON. IT IS IN FACT 8 MONTHS OF GROWTH. :look:

What regimen do you use to protect your ends and keep them in good shape? PROTECTIVE STYLE IN WIGS AND OR BUNS ON OCCASIONS. THAT'S IT.

How long was your hair after that trim or if you have never trimmed, how long was your hair a year or two ago? APL

How long is your hair now? WL

What regimen do you use to protect your ends and keep them in good shape? I wear buns on weekdays. I wear it down just shake and go style once or twice a week... and I use low manipulation, straighten only once or twice a year, finger detangling... lots of moisture.

@classychic1908 can you please answer the questions in the OP?

@natural87, S&D is trimming of sorts. I was more interested in people who don't use scissors or any cutting tool on their hair for a year or more (See the OP).

ETA: Of course if you only cut like 5-10 hairs a year, then you may qualify in which case, can you please answer the questions in the first post of this thread?

I wear protective styles 85-90% of the time. I also keep my hair coated in sebum and S&D regularly.

Today I saw a beautiful head of hair belonging to @Charz which I think she said is recent, showing full ends on a head that hasn't been trimmed for over a year. I was impressed but it got me wondering how many others are like that.

It would be inspiring for those who don't want to drink the Kool Aid I've been selling--imploring folks to trim/dust regularly for better retention--if folks who haven't trimmed in over a year answered these questions:

  1. Do you have coarse or fine strands?
  2. When was the last time you trimmed?
  3. How long was your hair after that trim or if you have never trimmed, how long was your hair a year or two ago?
  4. How long is your hair now?

I know some folks do S&D and while I don't believe in it, I really just want those who haven't used scissors on their hair for over a year to take part. Even if your ends are a little thin, perhaps it's not as bad as I think, which will be very enlightening.

My hair thins so much if I go just 4 months w/o dusting so I think I'd look like I had a rat's tail if I went a year. I'm curious to see how others do.

Thanks in advance for your participation.

kinkycurlygurl, nice progress. But I hafta say if you S&D at all--and you say you do it regularly--then you do trim and are not in the category of the folks I was asking for. In the OP I wrote in bold font that I was looking for people who don't even S&D. In other words, this thread is for people who haven't cut their hair at all in over a year.

Love this thread! Nonie

Although I know you're an advocate of trimming often, your thread has inspired me to trim LESS often! :lachen:
I've been trimming every 5-6 months, with my last trim in Dec. 2011, IIRC. Now I'm gonna wait until Nov/Dec to use scissors again. That will make a full year without trimming and also be my BC day!

Sorry, I think of a trim as something way more drastic than an S&D, but I see your point.

I don't blame you. I think many of us think the same as you. That's why I made this point (about not wanting S&D folks) in bold font in the OP so people would be clear on what I was looking for. No problem though. Nice progress you have there.

Hey, @kinkycurlygurl maybe you can start a thread for "S&D only" folks. I always poop on S&D so that'd be a good way to show me whatchyall are made of and show others I don't know what I'm talmbout. Your hair clearly puts my theory to shame. So how about it eh? :poke:

I haven't trimmed/cut my hair since doing the BC 11.5 months ago. I don't plan on trimming for a long time. My ends look thick and healthy just as my roots. I will be flat ironing it in June for my 2 year post relaxer length reveal/celebration. I'll be sure to post some pics here. Only 3 more months to go.

Thanks Ms. Martina When you post in 3 months, please answer the questions in the OP, OK?

Sorry @Martina for mentioning you by accident. (The day I get that right the first time, it will be a great day! :wallbash:)

Pic in post #4

Hey Nonie,

Here's my info:

# Do you have coarse or fine strands?
Coarse

# When was the last time you trimmed?
Completely trimmed every inch of my hair in 2007. I've done search and destroys since then. I did cut my ends last year (about 3 inches) but I didn't do a complete hair cut, just snipped the ends of my hair to achieve a blunt cut.

# How long was your hair after that trim or if you have never trimmed, how long was your hair a year or two ago?
In 2007 I did the BC and my transitioning hair was almost APL. I cut it down to neck length. 12 months later I was APL again.

# How long is your hair now?
Waist length

# Please post two or more photos of your hair (preferably stretched or straightened) showing your hair's progress while on this regimen (Please date the before and after)

First picture was taken 3 days ago (excuse the no make-up LOL) I rollerset with no heat. Second picture was taken in Dec. Third picture Jan 15th when I had my hair professionally blow dried.

I take care of my ends by keeping my hair in a bun at night. Any time I got tons of split ends was when I fell asleep with my hair loose.

ETA: When my hair was relaxed I hadto cut my hair every 6 months due to split ends. I think it was due to too much heat and no protective styling.
