Sister Locks

Ok so I'm leaning towards getting my daughter sister locks, but I'm hearing complaints about them being high maintence. Are they really worth the high cost?

I'm going to say yes and no. The start up was very expensive for me, but the quality was worth every penny. I learned to maintain them myself, so that saved me a ton. Otherwise going back to the salon or even to pay someone would've been comparable to relaxer upkeep. I had my sisterlocks for 5 years until I got bored and combed them out. I have a fotki album with a few pictures of those days if you'd like to see them. Knowing what I know now and having had my past experience I feel confident that I could start my own locks at a fraction of the cost.

It takes a long time to install 500+ starter locks so you can expect start up to be pricey - unless you do it yourself. As for maintenance you can learn to do that on your own and save money.

My mother had sisterlocks and like the other ladies she maintained them herself. After 10+ years she chopped them (waist length) and started over with some bigger sized locks. To answer your question, they seem to be worth the expense, they were gorgeous!

I'm late in responding but I wanted to chime in. I started my sisterlocks with relaxed ends and three inches of new growth. I didn't have many problems with them settling in but they were a little more prone to slippage than the first set that I had started from fully natural hair. I think it is worth the price. I learned to retighten my own and would alternate between retightening myself and going to a consultant. Both times I ruined them by coloring but even with the start up cost being so high, I would definitely get them in again. They are about equal to a relaxer in maintenance.

How old is your daughter? Is she of age where she can maintain them? Does she want locs? Are you ready for the committment of sister locs if you child is not of age to manage them?

IMHO, I would only get them if my child is willing and able to maintain them.

BTW, I believe that they are worth the cost for a grown woman paying for them, not for a child who doesn't work.

I maintain my own sisterlocks. I paid around $500 to have them done and have retightened them every 6-8 weeks since they turned 1 year old. so basically, they have been free ever since. The first year, I paid about $40 every 4-6 weeks to have a consultant tighten them. I didn't feel like this price was outrageous at all. In the beginning they require more love and care. these days I shampoo once a week and that's about it! I wouldn't call them high maintenance at all

I've been thinking about Sister Locks for about 6 months, but I have too much product to jsut throw away. Maybe in a few years I'll revisit Sister Locks. I'm sure that when I finish playing in my hair, I'll want them again.

I'm leary about getting another permanant hairstyle.
