Are you prettier now with longer hair?

Beauty really lies in the face.

When I had long straight hair for the first 25 years of my life, I never lacked male (or female) attention.

When I cut my hair and wore it natural, I still received the same percentage of attention for my beauty.

The only exception was the type of attention. I know that it has been said a thousand times on this forum, but I don't get "hollared at" or pulled off the street (this actually happened) by a certain type of man or young man.

With short and medium length natural hair I've still received glances and approaches but they are not nearly as...hood (sorry)... as they were before.

This is all moot since I'm married, but I understand the plight of the single girl.

If you are concerned about the number of advances rather than the quality, then you should know that you can put yourself together and look as beautiful as some of the women posted earlier. A woman's true beauty is not only in her hair.

Can it help? Sometimes. Is it necessary? No.

interesting, I personally "feel" sexy and beautiful with longer hair...the way my bangs cover my eyes and the way my hair blows in the wind or bounces when I walk..it just feels good...i have seen women who jus look better with long hair instead of short including me, dunno what it is..

just my opinion lol.

I think long hair on a young black woman would make her more attractive (or attractive to more) to the opposite sex because its pretty rare for the most part. IMO

How is it rare given the number of women who have either grown it out and have it naturally (which is way more than I think a lot of people realize) or the number of women who have weaves? The women in media sport fake hair like their is no tomorrow, and a lot of regular women do too, although a lot of "regular" women wear weaves that aren't even long or mid length. I've seen plenty of short hairdos that are clearly sewn onto the wearer's head.

When I had really long hair (my own), I felt that the numbers of women with weaves made it a really common look. And boring.

For me, getting a good shape (in my case layers) means that I think I look really pretty with hair at a variety of lengths, but looking back at pictures, the really long hair was the least attractive, and the nicest pics from those days were when my hair was pulled back (and I'd say that while pretty is very much in the eyes of the beholder, I have great teeth and skin).

As many have said, hair doesn't make you pretty. It can make you look different, b/c a lot of people hide behind hair, and yes, if you have bad skin, teeth, etc., you don't have anything to hide behind.

But a pretty woman is pretty no matter what, and a lot of pretty women look better without hair in my opinion b/c you can see their nice features, skin, teeth etc. I think having no hair makes a lot of women pay attention the details that really make their features pop.

So if you are a buttaface, having hair down your back doesn't change it, and I'd also agree that I don't want to hear from men who are going to treat me like a different person based on how long my hair hangs...I think that is a very look for hood guys, and I would never respond to one of them anyway.

So maybe it makes average look "pretty" b/c it covers it up.

I think longer hair on Black people gets you more attention for it being perceived as an anomaly. That extra attention may cause a person to think that they look better. If you have an ugly inside, that will overpower the long hair. You become a witch with extra hair. The hair may draw people; however, it is your attitude that keeps them.

Exactly. Other nationalities have a thing for longer hair too, but blacks are more prone to get extra extra attention when its real hair.

Now that I've had both long and short...I'd have to say I got a lot more attention from men when it was short but more compliments from women when it was long. Personally, looking at old photos, I look better with shorter hair.

No. I actually think I look better with big curly shrunken hair (above shoulders) or a straight bob , than when it's straight and MBL. I'm always debating cutting it because of this. LHCF has turned me into a crazy hair grower.

NikStar, you have grown to tremendous lengths, but looking at your fotki and agree with you. I will not lie, I see your bobs in my dreams, lol. They are cute and you have a gorgeous face for them:yep:.

Not anywhere near my goal yet..but prettier NO..sexier.. hell yeah! Outside of this board people do not expect to see black girls with longer than shoulder length hair

Chronically at BSL -_-

I don't think hair length makes you look prettier, but I do want to know if anybody would have a good idea where I could find a human hair wig like Ciara's short cut above? IT IS FIERCE!!!!!!!!!!!!

For me on my journey, this has always concerned me. I am growing my hair longer and I wait for this 'attention', lol but I find many people look at your hair sideways. I think long hair is common, whether men love it or not, whether its real or not, long hair is a dime a dozen these days. Its either store bought or home grown. BUT, there are some women it looks pretty nice on.

As many of you have said that you think you look better with shorter hair, I wonder if at some point on this long hair journey, several us will cut our hair back to a shorter length.
I often contemplate this. I will wait to reach my goal which may be this summer, before I throw in the towel. I will be honest, the older I get the more long hair isn't the top of my beauty list. I'd rather have something low maintence, flattering and makes me feel darn fine without all the bells and whistles. But who knows, right now I am enjoying my hair:grin:.

All of you MBL+s who are talking about how you'd look better with short hair and how you love it please cut your hair and send it to me

Errrm....I'm pretty regardless....

But uh, even though my hair is longer, I think I look better with collarbone length hair. When I wear weaves I always cut it to that length.
It makes my face stand out more in my opinion.

I meant REAL hair grown out of the scalp. Sorry for not clarifying that. But yes, there are many naturals with long hair, even without hard core research, I think its apparent that the ratio of long haired naturals/relaxed is a lot smaller than short haired/weaved-up naturals/relaxed.

Also I agree with you on that long hair does NOT make anyone more/less prettier, but I do stand by my opinion that it may make a young black woman more attractive due to the rareness.

:lachen::lachen: At the last part about "hood" guys. All I meant was that the level of attractiveness may be higher because of long real hair on a young black woman. I don't know if people treat others different because of the length of hair, and if they do, then thats pretty sad.

Lemme tell ya'll sum...........i just cut off 23 inches of hair 2 months ago....and i never realized how pretty my face was until i BC'd.....HOWEVER......i miss my long hair. But im glad i can play with shrinkage as it grows back...so i can kinda have the best of both worlds. Long hair makes me feel MORE exotic.....im already whimsical in my own way.....the hair is just the exclamation point......!

i'm gonna have to agree with those who said that there are some people who look better with either long or short hair, and then there are others who look good with either or. i happen to fall under the category of either or! sike, i wish! i would love to rock a short pixie cut and all these cute mommy wigs yall be killin but my head is too big and the shape of my head is not cute!! That also applies to certain hairstyles, not just length. For instance, i would love to rock a bun with my hair pulled straight back. Um...my fivehead would never allow that look!:nono: so i have to part my hair in the center and style it that way.

oh and ot but Fine 4s your siggy was calling out to me so i had to search out your fotki and you and your hair are very pretty!:yep:

I stay pretty.

Love it!!

Yeah, no one really cares beyond a certain group of black people and I've gotten more compliments when my hair is nicely styled and cut and not anywhere close to the longest it's been.

I think that even if you do want long hair and grow it, I'd recommend you get it cut into a shape. Long hair that can't be curled and just hangs there isn't a good look on a lot of people, and even if it looks pretty good on you, it gets boring really fast. I think that's what I noticed as I got more and more hair cuts. I just loved the way it framed my face and the way that it was so much easier to style. So I have no intention of going for "as long at it can grow" ever again.

I just think that out of all of the things that impress me on other people, hair is way down there on the list. Why, out of all of the things to admire, do black women place so much importance on that?

I know women of all races who have a thing for long hair(esp. women who consider it to be their beauty or their trademark) but since in my experience they are pretty ignorant about what is or isn't common for black women (and I think that your experience with that varies-a lot of women in my family have long hair so I never thought it was a big deal, and in my opinion, a lot of them should cut it b/c of their age. It doesn't do a lot for older women, even for black women who don't have as much sagging and wrinkling in the face), they don't pay any mind to whether your hair is long or short, and it always cracks me up that they don't notice when the weave wearers go from short to long overnight (I was once asked how I knew someone's hair was a weave; it had been recommended that the person in question might have a hairdresser I could use since I'd mentioned that I was looking for one, and I pointed out that I wasn't looking for a weave specialist).

Its going to vary by person, no you cannot change ur face/features w/o surgery, but a hairstyle can definitely add or take away from your overall attractiveness. Even in those side by side pics upthread some looked better w/short and others better w/long. And even with length, the style and layering of it can make a big difference as well.

I've had really short hair before and its not very cute on me at all. I look better with hair at least SL and also I have to have body and some layering.

See, I think this is me. I look great with really short hair, but I will grow my hair to APL with layers and body and be very happy. Its long by RL standards and short by LHCF standards. But it suits me fine.

I dont know about prettier but longer hair suits my face better. To me hair length cant change if you have a pretty face or not but I do feel a certain sex appeal with longer hair though.

I agree with you 100%. I wouldn't say that long hair makes me any more attractive, but I sure do attract way more attention from men and females, young and old (and not always good attention either).

But it does make me feel extra sexy and confident!

I'm not gone lie, a hair style can dramatically change a persons look. I won't say it makes them prettier or not but it does change their appeal. Prime example: Emma Watson (the girl from the Harry Potter series).

You can't tell me this girl isn't sexier with that short cut than she is with the longer one.
