BEWARE OF COCONUT OIL...I think it broke my hair!

I've been thinking about my recent big trim and why. I really don't think it was the color now. What I've been doing differently is EVCO on the ends. I just really got into the whole EVCO thing. The warm EVCO massaged into my scalp increased my growth....but I think it made my ends hard.

EVCO is a "miracle" oil in that it has moisturizing AND protein properties. I get protein loaded, AND I live in a cold climate and we all know what happens to EVCO when it gets cold.

Just be careful of bandwagons. I'm back to my staple oil Sof N Beautiful Botanicals.

I use Vatika coconut oil and I have not had any problems. But I normally apply it at night. Did you put permanent color in your hair?

Chevelure618 Sorry about your set-back...Coconut oil works best on my scalp/Not my length (tangles for me)..Now if its a coconut nut oil based product with a lot of moisturizing ingredients in it/Works wonders on my hair/by itself NOT!

After you colored your hair did you balance out your moisture/protein levels?

Happy Hair Growing!

I live in NJ and yes, due to the cold, only use Fractionated coconut oil during the winter since regular coconut oil freezes. I normally use Vatika during the other three seasons with no issues.

I haven't had any problems with Vatika in the 2 years or so that I have been using it. Just won't use it during the extreme cold part of the yeary.

It will in the long run. It is excellent for shine but it has a drying effect and that is for skin as well.

when i use EVCO on my length it made my hair bone straight so i mixed it now whith other stuff if its to be used on my length and by itself on my scalp only

Interesting responses, I didn't realize that it's more for the scalp and should be used with other oils - I used it overnight in a DC and it left my hair hard. I'm not a fan!

In the beginning of my HHJ I used to use coconut oil on my hair and scalp several times a week to moisturize and seal and after a while my hair started to get really dry and hard so I stopped using it like that. I use it now as a prepoo, leaving it on for a few hours or overnight and rinsing it out.

I use coconut oil religiously on the length of my hair - and I've never had a problem with it. But I am natural, and I only have a small amount of color remaining on the ends of my hair (slowly cutting it out).

I also do regular moisturizing deep conditioning.

I personally think coconut oil is perfect...for me.

But like EVERYTHING, research what you are putting in your hair, how it might or might not work for you, and don't go hard on a bandwagon before you know how it will work for you.

OP: Were you doing regular moisturizing treatments as well? Did it break off at the color line? Perhaps more went into the breakage than just the CO factor.

I'm one of the ones who tried the miracle CO and absolutely HATED it on my relaxed hair. I used it to seal my moisturizer and my hair always felt super dry and tangled like crazy . I tried using it several ways but it was still a :nono: As soon as I switched over to EVOO my hair finally said :yay:. So I know now that CO was not for me. :ohwell:

Maybe that's the key- I'm natural and I love it. It may be moisture/protein overload for relaxed ladies- beware:ohwell:.

I like coconut oil, but like most oils it should be used to seal and/or lubricate, not for moisture. I get great shine from coconut oil, it doesn't weigh my hair down, and I it works well for sealing my ends when I braid my hair for a braid-out.

Transition Over
I use Vatika Oil on my head year round, and I don't think it has done anything. Yeah, my bun gets hard as a rock, but as soon as I get inside, it softens back up. I feel like as long as you're not playing in your hair when it's hard, it won't break off from that. And coconut oil doesn't actually have protein in it, it just prevents loss of protein from your hair, so unless you regularly use protein products in conjunction with the coconut oil, it's unlikely that it would give you protein overload.

Really, color is far more likely to cause breakage than coconut oil.
Although maybe if your hair just doesn't like coconut oil, that could have exacerbated the issue. How long were you using it? Usually, if your hair doesn't like something, you'll know almost right away and can stop before something bad happens.

Also, why did you start using the coconut oil on your ends? Was it just because, or was something wrong with them that you wanted to fix? If it was because you were having problems with them to begin with, it doesn't seem fair to blame coconut oil for the breakage.

I'm relaxed and I like evco. I use to seal with it daily but since have stopped sealing daily because I feel that daily sealing is no longer necessary for me. I use evco to get a nice gloss finish to my hair when it needs a little gloss pick me up and to seal my ends since I bun a lot.

My natural and relaxed hair does not like EVO. I've stop using other oils just to make sure and my hair would still feel dry and break. I mix it with other oils and still the same problem. I been giving vatika oil a try and my hair would be nice and soft and the next day when I wash hard and breakage.

I'll try again in the summer.

I hear you Chaos,
Even if the CO made the hair hard, if you're not messing with your hair it can't break it off. But that might be easier for us to say, meaning people who either bun or do low mani/protective styles like we do.

Honestly, I'm always interested in hearing stories about products causing setbacks because, I can't say I've experienced setbacks because of products, technique, yes. I try to use up everything I have no matter whether I like it or not. If I don't like it, I mixed it with something I do like until it's gone (I'm cheap, I know this.) However, I won't buy it again. Maybe if I was relaxed it would be more obvious to me....

No. It was simply Beautiful Browns in Jet Black. That is supposed to be No Ammonia No Peroxide and wash out in 6 weeks. I've done it before with no problem....I've tried to think what else I might have been doing differently and EVCO I was doing strong and hard.

I've learned my lesson. I think I will continue the warm EVCO scalp massages, but maybe only a day or two before wash day so it doesn't get on my ends. Thanks

Wow. You all confirmed this for me. My regimen was down pat and I was 2 inches from a gorgeous BSL (on me it will look like MBL because I am almost 6'0") and then to lose 4 inches to a bandwagon just makes me so mad. I look at myself in the mirror now and hate it. I hope I can stretch until June so I will have 2 inches. My brithday would've been my short-term goal of BSL....oh well.

I only flat-ironed once in that previous stretch of 10 weeks

I only used Beautiful Browns in January

I stopped that UBH Deep Conditioner and used Aphogee 2 min/Green Tea/Leave-in 2 or 3 times in a row

It broke off 2 inches. The previous stretch I trimmed it about 1.5 inches cause it seemed a little "breaky" and I wanted to nip it in the bud.

I can't seem to pinpoint what it was. It seems to be either too much protein build-up on my ends, the color, or the EVCO

When I clarify my hair completely (squeaky clean) it feels so much better and then if I use a ORS Replenishing or Silk Elements Megasilk type conditioner (both have SILK protein I think). And Lacio Lacio (silk protein) works . Maybe silk is for me.

If I use coconut oil for too long, it starts to behave like protein to my strands and it dries them out. I have to switch between coconut oil and jojoba or olive regularly.

Have you considered that it could be the actual conditioners that you're using and not the leave ins? Because the ORS and Silk Elements that you mentioned are both products that I used to use and thought they were moisturing my hair when they really weren't. They made my hair look and feel great for a couple of days, then it was dry, crunchy city.

I've learned that my hair does better when I use good conditioners that do what their supposed to do, that way I don't have to depend so heavily on leave ins to make up for what the conditioner didn't do.

By the way I love coconut oil, but I find that I rarely need to use it or any other oil now.

My hair doesn't like coconut oil. It gives me hard, crunchy, shiny hair. I can use products that contain coconut oil but I cannot use the oil by itself.

Listen to your hair. Don't try to force coconut oil to work for you when you hair is having adverse reactions to it.
