I'm about 70% ready to get a bob style. As I see it, my pros and cons are

Pros:
*less hair will take less time
*cute, contemporary style

Cons:
*no more self-trims
*will need more salon visits for maintenance
*more heat use
*no ponytail
*20 week stretches will have me looking like Tracey Chapman

I am most concerned about maintaining the style and having to visit the salon more than I do now.

Please tell me about your experience with your bob.

First I want to say that I am jealous that you are going to do this. I am so ready to give myself a cute style, too.lol!

Anyway, before trying to grow my hair out I had short cuts a bobs for years. I did go to the salon more than I do now, but once I knew how to take care of my hair, I was good to go and became a self-styler. The only time I would go was for a touch up and a good cut. For me, it was low maintenance because of this. I loved my bob and would go back in a heartbeat. The stretches will have your hair looking crazy, than your long hair. For me, there wasn't alot of heat use because I would wrap my hair around my head and use large rollers on the top for the bump, and in the morning I would take it down.
Is there a way to try a bob sew in, just to get an idea of how you could take care of a it, just to be sure you really want it? Or maybe cut in stages, so that you can go back to wearing long hair if you change your mind?

I loved my bob! Yes it was a lot of heat involved. I wrapped it nightly and visited the salon weekly by choice. It rocked it for a year. It grew fast. My goal was to transition by cutting off my relaxed ends and it worked.

Didn't like it as it grew out

Bobs are very high maintenance. If you aren't willing to visit the salon every week then I wouldn't do it. I wore a bob for several years, but then I was at the salon every Friday religiously.

I wore my hair like this from 2005-2006

Once when I was anti-pony tail I always had a bob.

I did not use heat frequently. I had a bob the length of Lunda's. I went for TU at 8 weeks. I only got trims then.

I did not wrap my hair becauase I was always left with that one crazy side. I just threw on my bonnet and finger combed in the morning, I also just put on a little perfect for perm. I never had mine with bangs though. I like it like that because I could change the look as I pleased, part on either side or comb it all back. BAM my style was done

Wore One for Years....IMO: It's all in the Cut! It should be able to Fall Into Shape with minimal effort.

It's a Classic. It never goes out of Style. A good Cut (Shape) makes it very versatile and timeless.

I went to the Salon Weekly. Probably coulda' done bi-weekly tho'.

I have a bob right now. Don't use direct heat often. I used to use carusos in the morning and it took about 10 minutes-ish to create the bob for a bump that lasted for the day. I would use the carusos now except I'm out of town and I left a lot of my hair tools at home.

So now I'm using satin rollers at night with a satin bonnet on top. Me likey :D I use the jumbo size at the crown and the medium size in the back. To prevent the dents caused by rollers I take the clip that it comes with out and use roller pins instead at the crown. The rest of my head I just use the roller with the clip in it coz the hair at the crown will cover the dents on my hair in the back. In the morning after I take down the rollers I wrap my hair before I get in the shower and it loosens the curl a little.

I don't go to a salon every week. As far as stretching relaxers I'm in the braid challenge so in about 2 weeks I'll be getting my hair rebraided.

When I was relaxed the bob was a very low maintenance style for me(trust me I'm very style challenged). My stylist would give me a precision cut bob with soft layers. I would wrap my hair nightly and only needed to use heat maybe once a week. I unwrapped every morning and headed out the door. The soft layers just fell into place.

If I wanted extra lift , I would place a large roller at the crown area of my head and wrap the rest of my hair.

Hi Supergirl,

I love the Bob. Its a classic cut and is very stylish. Check out Asian Stylist, they're the professionals. It can be as long or short. Probably nl would be the longest or asymmetrical for a dramatic look.

Supergirl your hair looks great in the sig pic! Don't do it! Curl it tighter or something to get through this feeling :) If you must cut, do a very long bob keeping the longest length in the front and the back no shorter than between shoulder and apl.

I have worn so many bobs in my day lol..my last time wearing a bob was about 2years ago..i grew it out on my own to the length next to my username. I washed, dc'd &flat ironed weekly or bi weekly and i wrapped everyday. I or my Mom relaxed my hair once every 8 weeks and i trimmed myself. I kept it one length until the back caught up with the rest of my hair and then i began growing it out.

I had a bob and loved the style mine was not all one length I had long side swept bangs. I only went to the salon once a month but I would wash wrap and flatiron my own hair at home every week this was before my HHJ and I wouldn't use that much heat now.

If you can roller set your hair and wrap it yourself, there'll be no need to go to the salon weekly. However, you will have to go for a trim every 4-8 weeks for a trim to maintain the style.

Or wear a faux bob or wig.

:thud: This fits your face so well!!

Very sexy!!

I had one a while back as well. I got it cut y one lady, and the next lady closer to home couldn't trim the cut right. So I went through the awkward grow out stage :ohwell:

I had one in '09 when i was transitioning and decided to cut some of my relaxed ends off. It was a lot of heat. I went to the salon every two weeks for a blow out. In between I would use curlformers after about a week of it being straight. I liked it, but then I got bored. I bc after about 3 months of the bob.

I agree with Shelew--get a long bob. To the other ladies--great bobs! It's making me mine. I had a bob a long, long time ago. I got mine done at a Vidal Sasson--with a trainee, later went back when she was a regular stylist.

Wow you're going to cut your beautiful, long hair?! I have to stage an intervention here LOL j/k

I have a cute bob wig that I wear sometimes.

I had a bob when i was transitioning(we wont go into how many times i transition). But i did not worry about maintenance because i grew it out.
I really miss my short hair, it was soooo easy.

^^Thats when i first got it cut, unfourtantly the lady did not know what she was doing so it was basically a short hair style, no bob-ness:)look:)

Wet and "curly". After the second cut. I regret not taking better pictures, i wasnt too much into tracking my hair progress when i first started.

After it started to grow out a bit. The best thing about having a bob was that it was easy to style, for me atleast.

When my bob started to grow out, it grew out pretty evenly. I did not go and get trims. I only trimmed maybe once or twice. Dont mind the dye stains..:lachen:

The cons for me..

-Could not wear it "curly" until my hair grew out a bit
- Usually had to straighten. I used heat once a week. Although.. My hair did not suffer from it.
-Could not get a ponytail, which killed me because i live in buns & ponytails.
- My hair grew out evenly so i did not have a bob style for too long, so i guess that means frequent trims(to keep the bob style).
- It was short:ohwell:

My BFF has worn a bob for many years after cutting off her BSL hair. She is at the salon about every 2 weeks (if she goes at all) and she gets touch ups at 12 weeks.

She maintains it on her own, sometimes straight and sometimes curly (rollers or curling iron). It's cut to frame her face and it falls into place easily when straight.

When I wore my bob it was mostly fresh from a relaxer b/c I wore buns so much that I just wanted a break. I never cut my hair that way it just grew that way. I've always had the same regimen so the maintenance of it was just putting it behind my ears and sleeping in a satin bonnet.

Well, thank you guys for being honest about the maintenance. Sounds like maybe I'd do better to just cut my hair to BSL or something.

Getting a bob sew in is a genius idea! Great way to test it out and all, can see what the maintenance is like too.

Well, you have more cons than pros. Are you really 70% ready to do this?

I think Bob styles are cute. It's been a while since I had one, but I loved it back then when I had it.

I highly doubt that 20 week stretches will have you looking like Tracey Chapman. Or is it her hair you're referring to? :look:

Girl, I say keep on wearing that wig.

Now that you have cut your hair, what advice would you give me?
I am going through one of my "tempted to cut my hair again" phases.
