I am only a few weeks post but I am quite encouraged by the fact that I can do a blowout and use a flat iron to give me the straight look . . . however, I don't want to damage my hair. So, I'm wondering how often you naturals use heat on your hair? In addition to the poll, please indicate the following:

1. How often you use heat? What tools do you use (blow dryer, flat iron, covered bonnet, etc.) and in what ways (deep conditioning, blow out, etc.)?

2. What type of hair protectant do you use?

3. What is your hair type?

4. Anything you'd like to add?

I use heat twice a year to flat iron for special occasions/length check/trim.

2. What type of hair protectant do you use?

I use CHI silk infusion which is not labeled as a heat protectant but some say it is some say it isn't but it works for my hair.
3. What is your hair type?
3b/c

4. Anything you'd like to add?
If I was to use heat regularly I would only use it once or twice a month and then I would def. use a labled heat protectant.

I didn't vote on the poll but here's my thoughts.

2. What type of hair protectant do you use?
chi silk infusion and silk elements heat protectant

3. What is your hair type?
4B with some 4A

4. Anything you'd like to add? With my hair, I find that it is best to leave a little moisture in the hair before using heat. I would say my hair is about 85% dry.

1. How often you use heat?I've used it 2-3x so far this year, I won't be using it too much during the summer months because of the humidity.

What tools do you use (blow dryer, flat iron, covered bonnet, etc.) and in what ways (deep conditioning, blow out, etc.)?I use a flat iron only -- I band my hair and dry it overnight to stretch it and to keep from using additional heat. My setting is no higher than 370 degrees and that seems to work and keep me from getting any damage. I pass the flat iron down my hair 2x to straighten on that setting.

2. What type of hair protectant do you use?I've only used crisco oil to flat iron my hair.

3. What is your hair type? 3c/4a

1. How often you use heat? What tools do you use (blow dryer, flat iron, covered bonnet, etc.) and in what ways (deep conditioning, blow out, etc.)? - So far in my journey three times to attempt a blow out but figured blow outs don't work for my hair so I won't use heat in the foreseeable future.

2. What type of hair protectant do you use? - I used Dove Intense Damage THerapy Heat Shield

3. What is your hair type? - 4a, b, some 4c and some 3c

4. Anything you'd like to add? - Straightening serums can really help straighten hair during heat styling.

Oops I forgot to answer the questions

1. How often you use heat? What tools do you use (blow dryer, flat iron, covered bonnet, etc.) and in what ways (deep conditioning, blow out, etc.)?
DC, then rollerset, flatiron the roots

2. What type of hair protectant do you use?
Chi hair protectant

3. What is your hair type?
Natural 3C

4. Anything you'd like to add?
Just wanted to mention again that I straighten more in the winter (1x a week) because I don't want to walk around with wet hair in the cold. In the fall I flatiron my hair 2x a month. In the summer I don't straighten my hair because it'll get puffy and frizzy quickly.

1. How often you use heat? What tools do you use (blow dryer, flat iron, covered bonnet, etc.) and in what ways (deep conditioning, blow out, etc.)?
Once every 6-14 days. I know that's a weird range--in general it's once a week, but sometimes I get lazy and end up waiting until week 2.
If I deep condition, I use a soft bonnet dryer most of the time, or just leave it in a long time. Blow dry with a hot air brush with a straightening attachment, then flat iron with a 1.5 inch Sedu.

2. What type of hair protectant do you use?
I have several products I rotate, but in general I use a serum for wet hair (Organix Coconut Milk Anti-Breakage serum), plus some sort of blowdrying product. Most recently I'm using Ojon Damage Reverse Restorative Smoothing Glaze (awesome!). I also like Organix Moroccan Oil (it's really a serum), or Organix Vanilla Silk Blow Dry Cream. I like Organix stuff :look:

After blowdrying I use a bit of Giovanni Frizz Be Gone Serum before flat ironing.

3. What is your hair type?
4a

4. Anything you'd like to add?
I pre-poo with protein or deep condition with something moisturizing every time--I alternate between the two. So I do some sort of "treatment" every time I wash. I have fine hair that needs protein a lot, so that's just how it works for me. Someone else may not need protein as much.

I battle frizz in the humid months. Sometimes I just won't bother straightening and will wash and go and keep it moving. Otherwise, I just embrace my big hair :)

I didn't vote because my option was not listed.

1. How often you use heat? What tools do you use (blow dryer, flat iron, covered bonnet, etc.) and in what ways (deep conditioning, blow out, etc.)?
I straighten once every two or three months. I always deep condition my hair before and either blow dry or roller-set. I always put some leave in conditioner in my hair prior to straightening as well. Right now I'm using Kimmyatube's leave in using Cantu Shea Butter but I want to try a lighter leave in next time I straighten. Then I flat iron. (I haven't gotten good enough with roller-sets yet) I usually go over my hair only 1x with the flat iron. I use the comb chase method or a soft bristle brush.

2. What type of hair protectant do you use?
I use IC Fantasia Heat Protector and Coconut Oil to straighten. But I am going to be trying some different heat protectors the next time I straighten.

3. What is your hair type?
I consider myself 4a crown and 3c everything else.

4. Anything you'd like to add?[/QUOTE]
I don't straighten in the summer because the roots start to kink back up.

I chose once a month because my option was there. I actually use heat maybe 5-6 times a year now.

1. How often you use heat? What tools do you use (blow dryer, flat iron, covered bonnet, etc.) and in what ways (deep conditioning, blow out, etc.)?

So far this year, I've used the blow dryer twice (for blowouts), and I've used the flat iron on a tiny section on the back of my hair for length checks twice. I don't plan to use heat of any kind again until Nov or Dec.

2. What type of hair protectant do you use?
I use the IC fantasia serum (red top)

3. What is your hair type?
4b

4. Anything you'd like to add?
I have a small patch of 3b hair at my nape, that, just to be safe, I don't think I'm going to apply heat to anymore. It literally straightens under running water :perplexed , so honestly I've been lucky it hasn't been damaged so far. I'll probably just rollerset that little section when I flat iron at the end of the year.

2. What type of hair protectant do you use?

3. What is your hair type?

4a

4. Anything you'd like to add?
Technique, product and the weather are the main things that affect your results on natural hair.

If you want to healthy straightened hair that retains length do not use direct heat more often than 2 times a month

treat heat like a relaxer and "stretch" it as long as possible before washing

upping the heat does not mean you will get straighter results

when taking advice about straightening look to see what the end result looks like on that person and how long it lasts and compare it to what you want.. The technique and products of a person who wears their hair down and bone straight for weeks are not the same as one who wears a textured press for 3 days

Hope this helps you out

I use heat about 1-2 times a year. I go to the salon for a super straight look and a trim, and the other time(s) I flat iron at home which results in a much less sleek look. Both me and my stylist use a blow-dryer and flat iron each time. I deep condition with coconut oil before I flat iron, even before my salon visit.

For the blowdry, my stylist uses a comb attachment, but I use the tension method. My stylist also uses the comb-chase method to flat iron, while I just kind of grab and go.

2. What type of hair protectant do you use?

Me: S-Factor Seriously Straight or Chi Silk Infusion
Stylist: Varies, but always TIGI products

3. What is your hair type?

I couldn't vote because my option is not there. The last time I used heat was last summer. I will be flat ironing at the end of this month to do a length check.

The tools I will use are a moisturizer, rollers for rollerset but I will airdry, then I'll use a flat iron, heat protectant with anti-frizz and a cutting comb for the comb chase method.

My hair type is 4.

I'm terrified to use heat. I've had so much heat damage previously and i really don't want to do any more unnecessary trims.. Someone was just telling me not to be afraid of straightening.. but i think I'll wait a few more months before i even think about it.

I been using a lot of heat lately, but that cause I'm doing braid style. (cornrows and sew-ins) I'm not the one doing my hair, so I have to blow dry it for them to comb through it. I use cool setting though. I say I use heat every 2 weeks between every 2 months. It depends on when I take my hair down and rewash it.

I don't. It's been about a year simce I bc'd after several months of transitioning and I haven't felt an urge to straighten yet. For my fine strands.I think it causes more harm than good.

Didn't vote because I don't have a schedule. I would have said every 2 years but April 2011 would have been two years since my last flat-iron and I didn't straighten my hair. No reason really; just couldn't be bothered.

I use CHI Infra Thermal Protection condish after my shampoo. Then I Curlformers on damp hair (or braids in the past) instead of blowdryer to stretch. Once my hair is dry, I use the wet-to-dry straightening method for the first pass. I used to let water be the "wetness" but now I use a spray heat protectant (John Frieda Heat Defeat) for the WTD pass. (Caution: Applying heat to wet hair could cause bubble hair which can lead to midshaft splits and breakage so do it at your own risk.) I then pass the iron one more time over narrow sections of my hair after applying John Frieda Thermal Protection Serum. The end.

2. What type of hair protectant do you use?
John Frieda line (both spray and serum--see previous paragraph) during the flatironing. CHI Infra Thermal Protective Treatment for conditioning.

3. What is your hair type?
4B

4. Anything you'd like to add?
Can't think of anything else to add.

I use heat 1-2 times per year.
I blowdry and flat iron.
DC the night before, wash, apply leave-in, apply heat protectant (hasn't mattered which kind as long as it has cones, but last time I used Organix Flat Iron Spray & I liked it), blowdry, apply sabino, flatiron (last time it got straight w/ one pass @ 375 (1-2 extra passes at the root), which I've never been able to do!))
I'm a 4a/b.
I've always used the comb attachment before, but having discovered that my attachment lost many teeth while in storage, I had to use a paddle brush last time and I got it straighter & smoother.
HHG!

1. How often you use heat? What tools do you use (blow dryer, flat iron, covered bonnet, etc.) and in what ways (deep conditioning, blow out, etc.)?
Maybe 4 or 5x a year, mostly in the winter. I use my Hot n' Silky blow dryer and a Tool Science flatiron. I used to use heat to deep condition but I got lazy and now I just overnight dc. No more blow outs for me unless I'm trying to make a statement. Dries my hur out.

2. What type of hair protectant do you use? I use Blow Dry Addict in sections with my blow dryer, and any serum protectant before I flat iron. Currently i'm using Beyond the Zone Straight shot. I get all my products from Sallys.

3. What is your hair type? 4a

4. Anything you'd like to add? The more I straighten my hair, the less I like it. I guess I'm just not used to it anymore and I find myself really struggling to keep it up. Maintenace is crazy especially in Georgia.

1. How often you use heat? What tools do you use (blow dryer, flat iron, covered bonnet, etc.) and in what ways (deep conditioning, blow out, etc.)? When I was first transitioning I got my hair flat ironed at the salon weekly. My hair was slowy getting dry and limp tho. So now I get my hair flat ironed about 4 or 5 times a year. I may increase it once I reach my length goals. I wear half wigs. I do a very light blow dry and flat iron every other wk usually on my leave out hair for a kinky straight look. And then maybe once a month or every other month I flat iron the leave out hair to wear a bone straight look

The technique they use at the salon and what I try to duplicate at home is
Deep cleansing poo
Moisturizing poo
Deep conditon under steamer
Blow dry w fhi dryer and denman brush
Flat iron w fhi platform or runway using chase method, one pass

Right now I'm really feeling the joico moisture recovery line. I also use some design essentials products

2. What type of hair protectant do you use? I don't use a heat protectant persay. I use a spray leave in usually that indicates it acts as a heat protectant

3. What is your hair type? I am mostly 4b, a little 4a. My hair is porous and fine so it straightens easier than u would think given the way it looks in its natual state.

4. Anything you'd like to add?
Determining ur heat threshold is really something u r going to have to figure out on ur own thru trial and error bc everyones hair is so different. I think mine is about once a month or every other month. Also as others have mentioned u might wanna just avoid heat in the summer esp if u live somewhere really humid. Take those months to give ur hair a break from heat.

My natura hair is flat ironed in my siggy pic using the methods mentioned

I have not used heat since my BC 2 years ago

leiah

Wow! That's amazing. I haven't "technically" used heat since last December...so 6 months. That was when I flat ironed.

I have used a blow dryer though (twice) to stretch my hair out prior to cornrowing though, but I held the cool shot button the whole time :look:
