What's So Special About Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is often touted as being a wonderful oil with tons of skin/ hair nourishing properties.

However, when I looked up coconut oil on NutritionData, I found that it barely has any vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids or minerals. It does, however, have a lot of phytosterols. (Please see the link below)

Hence, I wonder what is in coconut oil that would make it so special, and how would it be able to nourish the skin/hair as many claim that it does? There are some who consider it to be some sort of miracle oil.

i have asked myself this same question. And found that it is the oil that penetrates the hair shaft and not like others that just cover the shaft.

In this way thay say it helps keep moisture....and i tested it on my skin this week for the first time : face is soft and not oily like with other oils. i do this only at night (and cause its winter). Ive starte dit on my hair since...1 week.

after reading all this good stuff i said let me try it out.

One thing: i forgot its cold winter time so maybe hair wont be as soft as you expect. coconut is hard and melts when in heat (when you put in your hands it melts)

It keeps my hair from loosing as much protein. I can feel it strengthening my hair and I read it in another article. It can make hair hard or crunchy in cold weather or without a moisturizer used irst but I believe all oils can do that.

It also assists my scalp in relieving symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis.

It gives me a banging braid out

It's good for oil pulling

I like it on my food :)

It has anti-microbial properties that work well on the scalp. As for the hair, it leaves your hair soft and absorbs really well.

it makes my hair feel soft as heck.

i said this once, ill say it again, worry about the vitamins that you eat, not the ones you put on your hair.

Very true. I need to be more concerned about what I put in my mouth because it will benefit my hair and nails. I need to eat better.

I like coconut oil because it's a very light oil, but it still moisturizes my skin, scalp and hair really well. When used on my face, it evens the tone out really well. It's also very affordable.

Country gal : you must eat well. i have started eating well 3 years ago (first pregnancy), and just after giving birth a big chop and i statred my hair journey. your hair is what you eat as everyone says. Today i went to a market and bought loooooots of vegetables & fruits! i stopped buying fizzy drinks for home (ill lose my tummy too hopefully :) )
its now, water, lots of water, veggies and fruits, olive oil to cook, butter with omega 3-6 , scalp massaging daily, trying to keep it cool (too much stress at work)... all this should help

I love coconut oil. I use it in my cocoshealoe blend. DC's, & deep oilings. I sautee veggies with it and fry fish with it. I also use it on mine and DD's skin to lock in moisture after a shower, & use it to moisturize my two youngest kids faces & lips before they go outside in this freezing weather!

It makes my hair soft. But, I have to use it lightly or else my hair acts like a potato chip (crunchy). Olive oil does the same, but is more pocket-friendly for me.

I buy it off Amazon, but I would like to find some locally. I use it for my hair and food, it goes great on kettle popcorn:) I just recently started using it on my face and I love it! It keeps my skin soft with just a little dab and it lasts forever. I'd love to find new uses for it.

it leaves my hair soft but not greasy, but I can't use alot. I use it on my skin....it sinks in without leaving you feeling greasy & extra oily. especially if I use it on slightly damp skin. my daughter has started using it & hasn't had an eczema outbreak since & that's the only change she's made. after bathing, smells fabulous! not overpowering, just slightly tropical.
I cook with it, like scrambled eggs, or sauteed veggies. I put it in smoothies. I give a lil to my dog, especially since she won't stop licking my leg after I put it on....lol

I don't know and it leaves my hair crunchy as ****

Same here. It only works for me when I mix it with other oils or butters. Using it solo dries out my hair.

I just get mine from Whole Foods, or any natural/health food store. Lately I've in love with Dr. Bronners Fresh-Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil. I only buy food grade because I also cook with it and sometimes use it as a dietary supplement.

I have to be honest, whenever a product is promising hundreds of vitamins in it as a special formula... I walk on by! Hair is dead once it leaves your scalp! If it wasn't, hairdressers would be locked up everytime another client went for a trim/cut (screams all round!).

It prevents protein loss, sinks into your hair 90% and helps keep moisture in!
Now don't bathe your hair in it... a little each time will do!

I tried it for the first time last week and I must say that I've been missing out all this time. My hair was really soft and smelled pleasant. Now, if I can just find a good leave in I'll be good to go.

I love coconut oil mixed with castor oil or EVOO, it gives my hair the most shine out of any other oil I've used. And the scent of unrefined coconut oil is
