Think I'm having 'cone withdrawal!

My hair feels rough. At first I thought it was dry, but it's not dry, it's rough. I've tried sealing with oil, but my hair laughs in the face of oils. Don't get me started about the animosity between my hair and shea butter. The 'cones...they be callin' me man! I swear, if I had an inch of hair growth for every time I had to re-shelve a product due to 'cones I'd be butt crack length by now! I'm trying to stay on the CG path, but I'm getting weak! Any suggestions, empathy, sympathy?

Not to be devils advocate.. but if cones work for your hair.. why r u following the CG method again? Cones are not toxic... the claim is the cause more harm than good to your hair.... if u r sure they cause good... why stop? Forgive me if i made the situation worse...lol

I got my BC at Devachan, so you know that is CG Central. They got me all spooked about the 'cones, plus they tell you your hair has to adjust to the no cone life. But I think I am out of the adjustment phase. Honestly, I do not think I could pin down any ingredient that is making my hair rough. Typically I go by process of elimination: when I find something that works I go through and see what it doesn't have. Then I see if all the things that didn't work have something in common that it doesn't. I use 0 sulfates, and my hair is not actually "dry," as I thought it was before. I also have some color damage. This could be the real issue...but I want my cones to fool me into thinking I have healthy hair!!!!

I tried going cone free and it caused my hair to break off. I've learnt cones have their place in my hair care regieme. I avoid cones in my leave in products but definitely need it in my deep conditioners (helps with detangling and makes my hair feel soft). I clarify every two weeks to ensure I don't get build up which can lead to the cones suffocating the hair thus making it dry.

LOL DrC!!!

How long have you been on the CG method tho? Your hair will feel weird and then after awhile it will get better:yep: It is like a cone withdrawal:lol:

ETA: But if the cones were working just fine for you...by all means do what works!:yep:

I tried to go back to using Herbal Essence Totally Twisted conditioner...which has cones and...my hair felt SO weird! Even tho i loved it months ago..i got used to using my conefree stuff and could literally feel the difference...it felt like wax was all over my hair!:barf: The only thing i use now the cones is my Dominican conditioners and i really really rinse those out well...i'm even getting away from those tho.

I tried the CG method for January and I felt just like you OP. My hair felt really dry and rough at first, but I was using V05 Moisture Milks Conditioners. Last week, I bought a bottle of Tresemme Naturals Organic Conditioner and have been using that to co-wash ever since. It is really helping me a lot. My hair feels softer and not as dry. I have even been using it as a leave in to replace my beloved HE LTR Leave-in. So far so good, but I will know better at the end of February if I am going to stick to this routine.
Give it another month, and then decide what you are going to do.

My hair loves cones. I didn't get much retention with curly girl. I clarify every so often to remove cone build up and enjoy them. There's nothing wrong with cones really, they are in so many products because they work.

How long have you been doing the CG method?

Most say it takes almost a few months (6-8 weeks) for the hair to adjust. If after that time, you don't notice any difference and your hair loves cones, then do what works for you

About 5 weeks, a month or so. I finally decided DevaCurl was not the product line for me, so I've been co-washing with Suave Naturals and experimenting with different leave-ins. I haven't tried Tresemme (How do you spell that?) Naturals but I have some sitting in my closet. I'll commit to cone-free for another month, then. I'm not really having major breakage, but I just wish my hair felt a little "smoother." It's always good on wash day 1. It's Day 2 that it becomes a haystack!

Are you using any oil? The first couple of days my hair felt a little dry but the curls were fierce hahahaha...I retwisted last night with just olive oil and my hair feels better.

@Frisky Yeah, for some reason the oil just kind of sits on top of my hair. Then I have like, rough, oily hair. It's weird because I was alllll about some oils when I was relaxed. As a natural, they just don't seem to be doing what I need them to do! I did try the Queen Helene Royal Curl Smoothing oil yesterday. It felt great on day 1, but today, same rough feeling hair. I put it on over the cream. Maybe tomorrow I'll try it under? It doesn't say how it's supposed to work with the other product. My coconut oil was a FAIL. Olive Oil was never my friend when I was relaxed, but perhaps I should revisit it as a natural.

Have you tried Giovanni products? Their Smooth as Silk deep conditioner is the best I have ever tried. It literally leaves the hair smooth as if you were using cones. I also loveeee their direct leave in too. Please try the and a little coconut oil. It will do wonders.

I agree with Judy4all. If cones worked then don't ditch them. I would avoid putting cones on hair that's been dried though. Only use cone products on wet hair and you should be fine. Remember everyone's hair is different. Some people's hair like oils, some don't, some peoples hair like butters some don't. I fell for the whole don't use cones thing and my hair functioned horribly without them. The fact that I retain length with cone filled products lets me know its not harmful to my hair.

A good cone-free conditioner is Garnier triple nutrition ( in the darker green tube). Works very well.

Also, you may have a porosity issue.

Yes. I used them before I was completely natural. I tried the Smooth as Silk, but it didn't do much for my hair. The Devachan stylist did insist that she felt the cones in my hair when I used the Direct Leave-In, though. I didn't correct her, I just let her keep talking. I haven't tried Direct Leave-in on the natural hair yet, but that's in the hopper. So many experiments to conduct (my poor hair!) So many products, so little time!

I wrote out a detailed response then it wouldnt send

So short and sweet the silicones were doing their job and masking your colour damage now you dont have that any-more you can feel what your hair is really like

You cant repair the hair so it will need to be cut off sooner or later...

You also need to prob switch stylers

How long did u leave it on? I've found that the smooth as silk is most beneficial the longer you leave it on. Five minutes feels like a basic condition or cowash. Ten minutes feels like a smooth as butter deep condition. Fifteen minutes or more equals gold lol.

Hmm...I can't actually remember, maybe just long enough to wash the rest of me. I'm doing the steaming challenge, maybe I'll steam with it this week (10 - 20 min) and see if it makes a difference. I definitely didn't leave it in very long.
