Do You Think that Sulfate Free Shampoos Do A Good Job?

Anyone notice DULL hair from using sulfate-free shampoos? I've been using them for about 3 months. I recently noticed that my straight hair is a lot less shiny as well as my curly hair. Even the healthiest hair at the roots is dull. I've been using Nature's Gate Jojoba shampoo & Shea Moisture Moisture retention shampoo.

Sulfate-free shampoos work great. You just have to find the one that your hair "likes." I have been using Shea Moisture's Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo for over a year and my hair LOVES it. I alternate that with Shea Moisture's Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo (also sulfate-free) depending on how I'm wearing my hair (straight style or curly style).

I've found my hair to be MUCH healthier, MUCH softer and to grow somewhat faster after switching to these sulfate-free, all-natural shampoos.

and also: sulfate free shampoos come in as many flavours as the SLS types. there's ones for colour, for conditioning, for clarifying... so not all of them do the same thing. and it also depends on what you're putting on your hair. i'd say use the clarifying ones regularly if you're using cones and other stuff that may not rinse off easily but use the gentle, creamy ones if your products are mostly natural.

i use WEN (which doesn't count here i don't think) but i set my mom up w/ the Giovanni line since it worked well for me. i told her to use:
- Smooth as Silk shampoo (soooo rich) for regular weekly wash
- 50:50 if she wants to change it up, just because
- Tea-Tree Tripple Treat every 4-6 wks to clarify (cuz she uses heavy butters and such)

If you're into squeaky clean Giovanni TTTT does a great job of that.

oh, also Blended Beauty Soy Cream Shampoo was faaabulous as a mild cleanser

The sulfate free shampoos that I have tried, they don't lather well and my scalp does not feel clean and it really isn't. If I lightly scratch my scalp and find dirt or whatever under my fingernail my scalp is not clean. This always happens when I use a sulfate free shampoo. They don't dry out my hair though so I will continue to use them, but I prefer that my scalp feels clean as that is the purpose of shampoo. The conditioner gives you the moisture you want back. The creme of nature detangling shampoo has the "bad ingredient" sulfate in them and my hair loves that shampoo and does not feel stripped. I will give the shea moisture & kinky curly shampoos a try though.

I think it depends on what products you use (do they build up, have ones, etc.) and on the shampoo. I like Curl Junkie, Shea Moisture, & Giovanni. I do not like any of the Curls line of shampoos-they don't make my hair feel clean at all. Co-washing works better than Curls in my opinion.

I use Creme of Nature Argan Oil for my washes. Very moisturising. Nizoral when my scalp flares up. Very stripping. ORS Creamy Aloe for my monthly clarifying/chelating wash as I live in a hard water area.

I have Shea Moisture Shea Butter Moisture Rentention and it doesn't dry my hair out but I don't feel like it's really clean. I've tried other sulfate free shampoos and they don't work for my hair.

I use Kera Minerals and I love it. I still need to bust out the ORS once a month, but for the most part, the Kera does a great job.

If we're not counting things like castille soap, shikakai or clay, etc., I've never used a sulfate free detergent shampoo that I was happy with. Sulfate free shampoos do have some bubbles which is not an essential for me btw but the ones I've used don't seem to cleanse properly and also leave hair feeling stiff and dried out.

I have been using Keracare 1st Later which is Sulfate Free and i find it does an excellent job on my hair. In the summer i use WEN since it does a good job doesnt leave much of a residue and i airdry.

Elasta QP Creme Conditioning Shampoo - sulfate free, chock full of goodies, ultra moisturizing, lathers very well, and is the best thing that ever happened to my hair.

I know before I said I didn't like sulfate free shampoos but I think it is just because I didn't quite find the best one for me. Although three of my ultimate FAVORITE shampoos are sulfate based, I have stopped using them because I plan on doing a CHI Enviro Treatment in the near future, which will require me to use a sulfate free shampoo to preserve it.

My two new favorites are Keracare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo and Syntonics Grothenic Shampoo, both of which do an excellent job cleaning the hair without drying it out. My biggest problem with most other sulfate free shampoos were that they did not clean the hair well enough, mostly because I was using heavy products at the time. I think now since I'm leaning towards less heavy, cone filled products sulfate free shampoos are responding better to my hair.

Do you think they effectively clean your hair, or does your hair still feel dirty after using them?

Do you think they clean sufficiently? If so, what is (are) your favorite sulfate free shampoos?
They actually clean a bit too well on my hair:nono:,like clarifying, so I went back to using sulfate shampoos and my hair stays moisturized.
