Has doing your own hair been releasing or treachourous?

For me it has been the most releasing experience ever. No more relying on stylists to give me results or waste my entire Saturdays to sit in a salon. While I would say most of my journey has been releasing there were some storms. Finding the right products has been cumbersome. I can only imagine those times I felt like giving up but I'm so glad I didn't. I'd like to hear from you ladies on what this experience has been for you and how about listing the products that you use that has made your experience worthwhile or the products that caused nightmares for you.

Currently Using:

Tangle Tamer~~~moowah.......love this thang!

Phyto Dry Hair Line~~~another big moowah. Use this in the summer

Phyto Ultra Dry Hair Line~~~another moowah. Winter use only.

Star Lacio Lacio Line~~~huge big moowah!

Coconut Oil~~Kisses

Aloe Vera Oil~~Kisses

Hair Steamer~~Kisses

Nexxus Emergencee~~Kisses

By the way when I say hair care line, I mean the shampoo, conditioner and leave in conditioner from that entire line.

Now for the nightmares:

Tangle Teezer~~:spank:
Shea Butter~~Dries my hair out! :gunner7:
ACV rinses~~Another Sahara Desert experience. :whip:
Wen Fig~~:deadhorse:
Apoghee Protein Two Step~~:gotroasted:

It has been very freeing for me. My salon visits were limited to monthly deep treatments and touch ups so I am no stranger to doing my own hair weekly, but it nice knowing I can do everything my hair needs on my own.

I always resented the idea I could not wet my hair daily so I am enjoying doing that and flaunting my progress in my naysayers' faces

Fortunately, there are a number of products that work well for me. In selecting my holy grails, it really came down to convenience and access.

Releasing!!!!! For me it has been a slow process for me to become a total DIY'er. I wanted to continue to rely on professionals for my touch ups, trims and even occassional rollersets. But, I began rollersetting and purchased a standing professional dryer (Pebco brand) and now it takes half the time as the shop. My self relaxing left my hair super soft, strong and healthy. And after my last trim turned cut by a SHS I'm completely done. When I do my hair...it looks professional and my hair still looks amazing. And its always what I want!

Kerapro for dry to very dry hair....LOVE!!!
Optimum No-Lye Relaxer....I wish I'd discovered this SO much sooner!
Bee Mine moisturizers....my first and truest love!

I personally like doing my own hair, and have done so for at least 15 years:grin:. Saves money, and i've learned a lot about my hair.

Freedom!

I was never a salon girl. I was intimidated by salons and I always got complaints from beauticians about how thick my hair was. Once a went natural all bets were off. The only place I can say I had a great salon experience was Deva Chan. By the time they came along, I'd been doing my own hair for 10 years.

I'm glad I never became dependent on salons. Now, I can maintain and style my hair myself confidently.

At first it was stressful for me to do my own hair since I transitioned from relaxed to natural without the big chop for 2 years. Dealing with the 3 textures (relaxed ends, texlaxed middle, natural roots) became a chore. However, once I understood how to manage my natural hair, and even more so once I became fully natural, it's fun to do my hair.

It's also been much cheaper. At one time I had weaves installed every 12 weeks with relaxer touch ups and then I moved over to fusion extensions aka strand by strand.

Being natural saves me so much money!!! I have spent a ton of money on products and wigs (some human and some synthetic) but nowhere near the amount of money I was spending on fusion weaves.

I have a few staples:
Aloe Vera Juice
jojoba oil
coconut oil
castor oil
Giovanni Smooth as Silk Conditioner
Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship leave in (old version)
aloe vera gel

I am a woman released!

Seriously, I will never let another person touch my hair, now that I know how to properly care for it and retain length. I'm even experimenting with making my own hair products.

I'm somewhere in between. I do my own hair but I'm over it. It's been 3 years growing my hair out and many times its still aggravating. I've found better products and techniques over the years but my hair still takes a lot of work for me to do it.

When I finish working on my house and my money frees up, I will have no problem going back to a salon to have my hair done. I'm natural though to that will consist of getting twists or braids. I really take no pride it doing much of anything myself :nono:

So I guess I would have to say it went from released to treacherous. I will feel released when my hair is long enough to put into 1 long braid down my back and wrap that into a bun.

For me it has been releasing. :D

Buuuuuuuuut sometimes I know I have to do my hair, but I just don't want to get and do the labor. I can be sooo lazy at times. At times I'll miss just sitting back and letting then work on me.

It depends.

I like knowing I can do my hair any time without stylists.

I will say I enjoyed doing it more when it was shorter. Now its longer and can be frustrating.

I love doing my own hair. But about 3% of the time I would like to sit back and let someone else do the work. Not near enough to really matter.

Releasing for my sanity and my wallet. I refuse to wait long hours in a shop and I got tired of being less than thrilled with my results. Prices charged are just ridiculous in many cases for the services received. The only thing I am not looking for and which may end up being treacherous is trimming my hair. I am paranoid about straightening my hair and losing my curl pattern. I am afraid that I will truly mess my hair up trimming. I am at a crossroads with that.

I am so happy that I am finding my tried and true hair products. I have been using the following with great success:

Terressentials
Henna
Coconut Oil
Vatika Oil
Hair Therapy Wrap
Qhemet Burdock Root Butter Cream (recent find)
Homemad shea butter mix
Acv rinses
AVJ spritz

Brighteyes35 what does the tangle tamer look like? Is it the comb w/rotating bristles? I've been eying this thing for a while. I wish there was a demo vid w/4b natural hair. What is aloe vera oil?

I love the freedom and control of styling and maintaining my own hair; I just wish I was a faster twister and I wish I could cornrow!

I JUST started to do my own hair on my own, only 4 months in!
It's a bit releasing and very frustrating.

I love that I don't have to plan my life around the salon anymore but it takes a lot of work for our hair to look nice! I haven't managed to get that "just stepped out of the salon" look yet.

I'm still trying to figure it all out.

It's VERY releasing for me to do my own hair. I still go to the salon to get it flat ironed since I wear my hair straight most of the time even though I'm natural, but it's cheaper and easier to do it now that I wash/blow dry my hair myself. Not to mention I get to pamper it as much as I like and really see what my hair needs to retain length and thrive.

These things have been critical for me doing my own hair:
ACV rinses
Grapeseed oil as a heat protectant~recent find:grin:
Pantene Beautiful Lengths Conditioner
VO5 Clarifying and Balancing Shampoos

Nightmares:
any kind of moisturizing conditioner except when I swim
Tresemme Heat Tamer spray:nono:
anything Pantene Relaxed & Natural related

I like doing my hair, but have probably spent more money as a DIY than going to the salon regularly. PJism and the process of finding what's right for my hair added up pretty quickly in the beginning. :lachen: But, I keep a trusted stylist or two on deck for trims and when I just don't feel like being bothered with my hair.

Releasing! I really take my time when I'm handling my hair and I have yet to meet a hairdresser who is as gentle with it as I am. Plus I'm saving money!

Tangle Tamer is the toothbrush looking thing with the rotating teeth. I love it! Aloe Vera Oil~~Back when everybody was first raving about Aloe Vera, I didn't know they were talking about Aloe Vera juice because people would just say Aloe Vera so I assumed it was Aloe Vera Oil so I went and found Aloe Vera oil at Amazon.com and loved it.

I've never been a salon baby, but right now I don't feel very free doing my own hair. I wish I could go to a good stylist on a regular basis.

I've been doing my hair since I was 14, so roughly for the last 20 years. I rarely go to the shop, probably once every other year to get highlights, unless I feel like sitting there for 5-8 hours...waiting. I get the "just stepped out of the salon" look at home, with awesome products and fantastic flat irons.

I've never been to a salon, and I've always been natural so I guess I don't know any different, really.
It's a very relaxing experience for me in general.
