Hey friends in Christ. Just wondering what social activities you stopped participating in as you grew in faith and also the new good activities you began to participate in?
Love you all. God bless you!

This is a timely thread and I'd like to hear what others, especially those who are single, have to say. Thanks for starting it.

For a while, I stopped participating in the "nightlife". I stopped going to clubs and lounges. I just stuck to movies and restaurants. The problem became that the latter (movies and restaurants) adds up money-wise over time. Additionally, majority of my current social circle prefers to do the former - clubs and lounges. I thought I could get back into the "nightlife" but the "innocent" part of it. Yea, right. It has actually impacted my walk as of late. It started with going to a lounge for live music and then resulted in a "door" being opened to me stumbling.

A family member has suggested that I meet friends through church. Ideally, this would provide an avenue to "wholesome" social activities. However, I'm having church issues right now.

Meanwhile, I do remember some "wholesome" activities from the past. I remember back when I was part of a Christian fellowship in college, we did the following: potlucks, weekend bible studies, good old chatting indoor for hours, praise & worship, Christian nightclub, retreats, restaurants, and movies.

Do you all still have a skating rink in your area? I do and it is still a lot of.fun. Although I ached the next day. They play oldies music.

My publix also offers a cooking class.

Also, a friend from college started light club in Detroit years ago. I don't know if its still there. I thought it was cute...light club instead of night club.

The Arts. There is an African American theatre here in town. A group of young urban professionals formed an organization where there have a mixer before going to see different plays throughout the season.

There is also a local dance company I go see from time to time.

There's a host of activities you can do. Today for example I'll be spending the day in Central Park. After that I'm going to go see an art exhibition on Caribbean art. There's a Brazilian concert in BK that I also want to go see if I have time.

You can go to poetry cafe, live music shows (granted it's not lewd music), art exhibits, short weekend getaways to discover a new city/town, musicals & theatre (make sure you check living social for good deals on tickets), local fashion shows, book club meetings, bowling, etc

You should probably go by what your own church has to say on the matter and if it doesn't have anything to say, check on whether your activity aligns with scripture. Does it cause scandal? Is it directly immoral? Does it break one of the 10 commandments? Otherwise, you are going to be swayed by personal opinion. The latter should not determine what is sin as that is clearly contained in scripture. Where something is not clear, use your own personal judgment and comfort level. Think about what the outcome would be for you personally, not the opinions of others.

Why do I say this? I know that some people think that dancing or secular music is a sin, drinking alcohol or smoking. But getting drunk is the sin, immoral (fornication etc.) behavior is the sin. You can set up fences around yourself if you feel it might lead you to sin (should you go to nightclubs, concerts, anything). But just calling something of those natures a sin would be incorrect (not that you have said any such thing at all).

And also, whatever you personally feel is sinful, you should not do against your own conscience. For example, drinking. If you feel it is sin, then don't do it. If there are lots of people doing it around you, then one should probably select another activity. I think that if you look at any activity through a checklist of personal do's and don't's, you can pick and choose as needed. The world is opened up to christians. In fact, I do what I did in the past. Was never big into clubs at all but I do just about everything I've always done before converting.

I’ve never done the nightlife stuff; I guess I’ve always been a fuddy-duddy… I like getting out in nature and participate in various sports, studying astronomy, getting together with other believers; playing and singing and sharing The Word. Also, I enjoy going to museums, art galleries, and the planetarium.
