Stuck at a length

That's interesting that you guys feel that twisting isn't good for natural hair. i just really started to do that consistently. hmm

I wonder why braids work better?

I used twists as my main PS for about 3 years with no problems. When I twist or braid, I seal with something really heavy - crisco, vaseline, a heavy butter, grease - that keeps the tangles away.

I'm stuck at bsl. For me, it's because my ends tangle up and there is nothing I can do but cut them. I need to figure out how to stop the tangling. I keep my hair stretched in protective styles like braids or twits. Sometimes buns. I'm not too sure what to do anymore.

I'm natural by the way.

For me, the worst things for my fine, tangle-prone hair are braids and twists; it’s as if I am inviting the tangles to a hair party. The most I will do is air dry in two Pippi Longstocking braids that are never braided all the way to the end (I stop braiding ~3 inches from the ends and put a spring clip on it. As they dry, I periodically smooth out the tangles on the ends. Once the braids have dried, I remove the clips and pin them up.)

IMO, braiding and twisting tangle-prone hair, especially the ends, is a recipe for disaster. Urban, are there any other styles that you can experiment with that doesn’t involve twisting or braiding?

im natural and these knots and tangles aint working for me so I plan to heattrain. the big difference between me and most is that i have a TWA and i'm not at a longer length like most of you. So im already frustrated but i LOVE my natural hair so much i can't relax it (no shade)

I looooooooved sew-in installs. I'm talking about love, love, love them! And I saw great growth when I removed them but I finally found out that sew-ins were so harsh on my strands. Yes a fresh relaxer always look good but my hair strands were weak. Hence why a few weeks later I no longer saw that length. My hair just broke off. All the time. So I'll sew it right back up and wait for that wonderful growth. Removed the sew-in, got a fresh relaxer and weeks later, same ol' story. That's why I asked the OP if her constant installs were sew-in's. Not everybody strands are strong enough to be tied around over and over with thread. I cut all the weak ends off and just started with wigs. That kept my hair covered all the same but being able to remove the wig every night was better for my hair. After that, retention came so easily. But this is JMO.

Thanks for answering !!!

One last question- What are you doing with your hair under your wigs?

TIA

I hear you PJaye. What's annoying is that twists and braids have gotten me to BSL. I suppose I just have to experiment with different styles as you suggested. There's no point of continuing to do the same things are not working. I think I may try Carlita's flexirod method. I'd actually been eyeing them, just hadn't found a reasonably priced set.

CarLiTa Thank you for your posts. They helped a lot!

I feel like I'm stuck too! Last year I was well on my way to apl.. then I got set back due to breakage from too much heat or not using heat properly. My nape broke off and and the area towards the back of my head..above the nape grows ever so slowly. Anyways I stopped using heat.. I haven't used heat of any kind since February and I started taking better care of my hair. I used wigs for a bit to PS and since then my nape has grown in. @ months ago I had a trim to even out my length. The parts at the front would reach CBL but the back was barely 3 inches. Major setback :(

Now I'm 2 years natural and my hair is once again stuck at SL. I'm in braids right now and bought a wig yesterday hopefully that helps.
