LADIES LET's TALK...MOWRAH BUTTER!!

Over the last 8 years, I have spent so much money on hair care products, I'm sure saying thousands of dollars is not an overstatement. I have learned that natural products are always the best. I just had to take time to research and with trial and error I have come up with butters and oils that really make my hair pop. One of the butters that I have always loved is Mowrah butter.

This butter is rarely mentioned on hair blogs, but this butter has become a staple for me. It comes from India and a few years ago it was very difficult to get. That's why I would buy large quantities of it whenever I could find it online.

I mix it in my PreDeepPoo sometimes, but mostly I use it as a leave in conditioner on wet hair. My hair feels so moisturized and soft after it air dries. Last year I started using it as a moisturizer for my face during the winter months. The butter emulsifies in your hands so it is easy to apply to face or hair.

HISTORY

Mowrah Butter is derived from the friut kernels of the Madhuca (Butter) tree, which is native to India. It is golden brown in color with a buttery consistency. It is reputed to reduce the degeneration of skin cells, prevent skin dryness and wrinkles and restore skin flexibility. Mowrah Butter is solid at room temperature but melts when it comes into contact with skin.

Also known as Mahua butter, Mowrah butter is cold-pressed from the seeds of the two species of Madhuca tree, which grows in India. It is solid at room temperature and melts on contact with the skin. Mowrah butter is high in oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and linoleic acid.

You all are tempting me, I can't have enough of butters and oils.
MrsJaiDiva let me dream: what is Cupuacu like? (i.e. penetrating/soft/hard/greasy/light...) And what about ghee? Oh man, I could talk about this for hours and then I would end up buying everything lol
I bought Illipe and cocoa but they are very hard and difficult to mix, I never get it right. But soft butters, I want them all!

Ghee is delicious, both for food and for hair. I've used it in body/hair butters, and it blends well and is moisturizing. I used it in a butter I made for my mom, and she loves that it's very moisturizing, but doesn't leave her feeling oily. I also use ghee for cooking, and popping popcorn...sooo good! :lick:

Cupuacu butter is Very emollient rich. It's more moisturizing than castor oil IMO...it's also pricey. I only use 1tbs at a time, so I feel like I get my money's worth. It's an Excelent butter though...worth every penny. It has a higher melt point, and takes a bit longer to dissolve.

Butters generally don't work well with my hair but I found mowrah the most moisturising. I've also tried murumuru, avocado, mango, shea, cocoa butters and none of those were as softening as the mowrah. If you like butters, you won't regret buying mowrah :yep:

So after reading this thread I decided to try this butter cause i've tried many butters in the past but they usually just sit on top of my hair. For that and whatever other reason i end up using them as body butters.

I LOVE this butter on my hair. Y'all dont understand how much i've fallen for this butter. I can use it on wet or dry hair and it leaves my hair so soft! Not soft & oily like others but just soft. Unlike shea butter, it doesnt build up too fast.

And the best part for me is that it keeps my uber coily hair from tangling as much! The only other product that does that for me usually is a silicone serum.

Thanks so much cocomama for starting this thread. I'd never really heard of anyone using this butter on its own before. I want to melt it and whip it to soften it but i'm afraid of adding anything to it to mess up its perfectness :look:

between this & silk dreams i'm thinking i might actually have to start to take hair pics again lol.

I have ordered from both of these places in the past. I last ordered from bramble berry last, but it appears they have sold out:perplexed

Got mine from Bramble Berry, too. It stores well at room temperature.

Bumping this thread to ask if you ladies know of any online retailer that sells the unrefined mowrah butter? The two retailers in the above links no longer carry mowrah butter and the version sold at thechemistrystore is ultra refined.

Many thanks in advance for your response,

morehairplease When I got mine from brambleberry.com it said they were only carrying it for a short time.

I was going to suggest gardenofwisdom.com; but I see they don't carry it anymore or are out-of-stock.

I purchased 10 lbs. in 2011. Have only stored it at room temperature and it is still good....no rancid smell, mold or discoloration.

Pompous Blue thanks so much for your reply. It's such a bummer that it no longer being sold on either site. If you ever consider selling some yours, please do let me know.

Again, thanks so much for your reply.

Thanks sweetie! I just emailed them to ask if whether or not it is unrefined, refined, or ultra refined because I did not see it listed anywhere. Hopefully, I will receive a prompt reply. Once I receive a reply, I will post their response.

ETA: At 12:07 p.m., I received the following response from chemistrystore.com:

The designation on our web page is Ultra Refined.
This Mowrah is firm (not so much as Cocoa Butter), but not soft as in Shea or Mango.

Thank you for considering The Chemistry Store.com

I tried Mowrah butter a couple of times this week and so far I like it better for my skin, not my hair. It's okay for my hair, better than my Shea butter mix.

I have also been using Avocado butter, which I hate for my hair. It left my skin very shiny, but not sure if I will order it again.

The Mowrah butter is firm, literally like a refrigerated stick of butter. However, Mowrah butter does not melt as quickly. I put about 1/2 cup into the microwave for 45 seconds to make it soft enough to rub onto my hair and skin. The Avocado butters is really Avocado oil that has been hydrogenated.

I am looking for something to use for sealing to replace Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercreme. So far Miss Jessie's is still winning.
