Why do non-black hair products smell 100x better?

Have you noticed that? Our black hair companies need to step it up. I want my hair too look and smell good too versus it smelling like sulfur, medicine, and chemicals? I just bought some garnier fructis leave in cream because the smell was so pleasant... just venting

But you do realize that the reason alot of products have perfume is to cover up the chemicals? I felt the same way about most natural products (I have super sensitive skin and am over the citrus or overwhelming baked goods scents) until I caught a whiff of Hairitage Hydration. :lick: Deliciousness in a bottle/jar/etc. :giggle:

I've actually noticed the opposite... Silk Dreams, Curl Junkie Smoothing Lotion, BASK, KBB (even though I don't use this line anymore). I actually can't think of the last time I bought something from a black hair company that didn't smell good.

I Agree with Iluvsmuhgrass

I guess you haven't smelled some of the Natural/Handmades?:lick:

Gurl....those products smell Wonderful.

So...You'll have to leave the Drug-Store Aisle and venture to the land of Handmade & Naturals:yep:

i always said this too OP. I HAAAAAATE the scents associated with black hair products. Its annoying. I don't know why they think that smelling like car oil is what we want. yuck.
That's one of the many many reasons i moved on to black hair vendors. along with the quality difference

Blue Magic, African Pride, ORS Replenishing Pak, TCB Grease, Let's Jam conditioning gel, Care Free Curl Activator... all of those smell good to me. :look:

I mean...just putting it out there...half of those stinky things are made by white companies and just packaged differently for the black folks.

Even with that being said...let's jam is geared towards us and smells hella good. I even have some cheap coconut hair grease that smells delicious.

And I've smelled some 'non-black' hair products that smell vile, this curly stuff in a blue bottle comes to mind.

So....

I can't cosign completely with you OP regarding drug store products, yes stuff like sulfur 8 stinks but I love the way ORS products (especially the replenishment pack), the green bergamot and indian hemp grease smells. In fact the Garnier leave you mentioned used to stink before the formula change. You gotta try some of the products the ladies are mentioning, not only do they smell great, but most of them could give you better results.

Plenty of awesome performing and smelling black products available..but with the exception of some Darcys products earlier this yr I've been on a garnier kick. I can't deny that 3 for $9 sale that is always in effect at whichever chain drugstore

I'm personally not crazy about many of the smells of most black hair products, and I mean the smaller vendors. While I love my products, I don't exactly go crazy over the smells of too much vanilla, cake batter, pumpkin, too fruity, or foody, syrupy. If I try a new product out, I usually hope it doesn't smell too much. I remember when I bought the DB Tacuma butter I think - I got rid of that thing right away, why on earth would I want my hair to smell like pancake syrup

I prefer smells like Alter Ego garlic conditioner, salon brands, and clean/fresh/perfumey type smelling products.

i so feel you OP. who wants to go around smelling like motor oil and oven cleaner?

i used to hate black hair products for this reason.

That indian hemp was my stuff back in the day wayyy before LHCF. I used it just for the smell.

In general, I agree with the OP. Most BSS stuff stinks. Besides indian hemp, the only good-smelling product from the BSS I remember using was the daily moisturizer from Soft & Beautiful. It smelled like oranges. Oh, Elasta QP Mango butter is pretty good.

These days, my top-smelling hair products are Carol's Daughter Monoi, WEN 613, and Vatika Frosting. All of the cheapie drugstore conditioners smell good, too. A lot of the handmade/natural stuff smells great.

I think white products tend to smell better as well. There are some good black specified products that smell good, don't get me wrong, but in general.. I agree with you op.

:yep: ITA, you have to start searching for black hair products not sold at your local BSS. Most of my hair products are by black owned companies not sold at major stores or the BSS, and they are multipurpose (hair, skin, nail, etc)

I disagree. Maybe if you're talking jherri curl juice or sulfar 8 (neither of which I've ever used :nono:)...but I've always loved the smell of African Pride, African Royal, Always Indian Hemp, some Pink Lotion stuff, various Softee greases, hot six oil etc.

Now that companies know that we are paying more attention and learning to take better care of our hair, they are stepping their game up as far as ingredients go. We also now have many black owned/catered to black hair natural product lines that use high quality ingredients and smell great to boot.

However, even shopping at the local bss, I have never put something unpleasent smelling on my hair, and this is waaay before Carol even had a daughter. :yep:

It really depends on what's in the products you buy. I find that most of the products that have mineral oil in them are the main culprits for a bad smell, even if they try to cover it up with a bunch of perfume, which only seems to make it worse. Though most of the stuff I use is from a "white" hair care line, my go-to moisturizer has no mineral oil in it and is from a "black" hair care line, and smells great. You just have to read the labels and be very mindful of the ingredients. :yep:

Honestly, I'm just hoping the trend in the "baked goods scent" forever goes away. I hate having my hair or body smell like food (cake, cookies, taffy, chocolate, pumpkin, etc).

Ideally for me products would be UNSCENTED. I find, even if its a perfumey scent that's not unpleaseant the smell still annoys the heck out of me! And some products for Causaian hair smell bad too! lol! :yep: Now, I don't know if Ojon is marketed to blacks or whites? but I bought Ojon Mask, Hydrating shampoo and hydraing conditioner and I'm about to throw them away because I cant STAND how they smell. I tried to use them up because they were not cheap and I didn't want to waste the money but the smell just drive me craaaaazy all day!:nuts::nuts::nuts:
