Thank you for this thread, OP. I have used PSing with extensions and wigs for the majority of my journey. Lately, I've not been feeling my wigs and extensions take me too long to put in and take down. The only PS I do with my own hair is mini-braids and they also take too long to install and takedown.

I hope to hear from more ladies who've successfully transitioned to PSing with their own hair from using wigs/weaves/extensions.

I've been thinking about twists but mini twists leave me with terrible tangles and lots of shed hair (after only one week and much less than I get with 2 weeks of mini braids). Medium twists are really anorexic on me. :(

1. How long is your hair?
Almost BSL

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style?
My hair is natural but I mostly wear it straight. Ponytails, buns, or loose styles. If it's not straightened, it's in a bun.

3. Do you have any problems retaining length?
Not really. I used to have issues with my natural hair knotting when I was doing wng puffs all the time, but I don't do that anymore.

4. How often do you go to the salon?
Never

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids?
No, but I've never used them. If I want to protect my ends I just wear a bun of some sort. I don't really braid my hair ever.

It Always Been About Hair!
Interesting thread. I would've loved to have seen the question 'natural or relaxed' in a thread like this though. It would be interesting to see how many relaxed heads (4b) wear their hair out every day with no protection and how long it took them to get to their current length and even if their current length is grazing BSL. If this is possible, I would change up my entire regimen right now! :yep:

I have a couple of questions for you.

1. How long is your hair?

About 2 inches to BSL

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style?
Twisted bun

3. Do you have any problems retaining length?
NOT AT ALL

4. How often do you go to the salon? NEVER since being on hair my journey

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids?

NOT AT ALL. I have retained far more hair through bunning than I did when I was wearing weaves and braided extentions. The only thing I liked about weaves and extentions is that I never watched my hair. But I find the fastest way to retain length to be while bunning.

I've worn all of those styles at least once but I've never done them consistently. I did go through a period of wearing wigs but it was literally only to leave the house and I work from home so that wasn't often.

1. How long is your hair?

BSL (hoping for full BSL by Dec)

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style?

Mini Braids- my hair, no extensions; wash and goes; maybe twist outs or braid outs. I wear my hair out a lot in any of those styles.

3. Do you have any problems retaining length?

No

4. How often do you go to the salon?

once a year or less

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids?

No, I prefer my real hair. I retain more without extensions or weave. Wigs are ok, but I feel self conscious at times.

I have a couple of questions for you.

1. How long is your hair? My hair is MBL.

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style? I do buns, ponytails, but mostly I wear it down. I've been bunning a lot lately because I've been too busy for anything else.

3. Do you have any problems retaining length? No

4. How often do you go to the salon? Never:look:

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids? I've never worn any wigs, weaves, or braids. So my pony tail and buns are my go tos.

I don't really protective style. I mostly airdry and bun or ponytail and put rollers in it. There's so many ways to spice up ponies and buns. They never get old.

I hope to hear from more ladies who've successfully transitioned to PSing with their own hair from using wigs/weaves/extensions.

I'm in this stage now. I used to wear weaves, wigs, etc. most of the time. Now I wear my own hair the majority of the time. It's usually in a bun or puff. Haven't worn a wig in almost a year. I do wear the occasional phony pony when I get tired of my bun.

Once my hair got longer it was easier for me to style it without the help of added hair. I prefer my own hair now. It's growing and retaining well. I should be BSL by the end of the year.

I recently had a weave installed because I injured my shoulder. It hurt too bad to raise my arm for an extended period of time to do my hair. Just getting it into a ponytail was a struggle.

I originally got 2 strand twists on my own hair so I wouldn't have to comb it. After wearing them for a about a week I decided I didn't like them so I took them out. Ended up getting a weave installed and plan on leaving it in until Christmas. I wear the weave in a bun most of the time so most people think it's my hair. After first of the year I think I'm going to get it cut and wear it straight for a while. At least until the weather breaks.

1. How long is your hair? WL

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style? Buns, twists, flexi rod sets, bantu knot out, mini braids. All my styles are pretty easy to do, except the mini braids, but I can keep those in for 4-5 weeks. The others I redo weekly. I also straighten occasionally.

3. Do you have any problems retaining length? None

4. How often do you go to the salon? 1-2x/year

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids? No I've never used them so it's not a big deal.

1. MBLish. This is the longest my hair has ever been.
2. I normally wear my hair in twists, updos, buns, and various out styles.
3. I have no problems retaining length as I'm usually wearing protective styles and I seal my ends.
4. I never go to the salon.
5. No; I prefer wearing my own hair. I've never worn a wig or a weave, so I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

1. How long is your hair?
Between WSL and hip length

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style?
It varies. Ponytail, my hair down, buns

3. Do you have any problems retaining length?
My hair grew pretty quickly the first 3 years. I think my hair has reached it's terminal length.

4. How often do you go to the salon?
Once or twice a year

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids?
I don't use any of those things. I'm not knocking those women that do use weaves, wigs, etc but that never interested me. Plus DH would probably be very upset with me. He likes to feel my real hair.

1. How long is your hair?
Heading towards U-shaped MBL

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style?
Buns and other updos in a protective style.

3. Do you have any problems retaining length?
My hair is medium to fine and until recently, I did have problems. After learning certain techniques like dusting, heavy sealing, constantly stretching, I'm doing better. I'm also a slow grower.

4. How often do you go to the salon?
Once in 9 years. I had a major trim - I did not regret the decision.

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids?
No. My hair is long enough that its not an issue for me. I prefer my own hair and I think I would look like a fool with a wigs, weaves, etc.

I have a couple of questions for you.

1. How long is your hair?

mbl layered straight

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style?
braidouts or pinned up in some kinda way. I like protecting my ends from the wind/cold.

3. Do you have any problems retaining length?
No, as long as I don't do anything damaging to it.

4. How often do you go to the salon?
every 3-6 months for a trim

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids?

No, because I have never worn any of these in my life. I think I still manage to protective style because I will wear my hair up, ends protected a lot of times, especially at home.

1. How long is your hair? MBL

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style? Twists or bunned.

3. Do you have any problems retaining length? Usually no, but if I go through a lazy spell and don't moisturize enough, breakage happens.

4. How often do you go to the salon? Once in several years. Last time was 2007.

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids? Nope. If anything, I find it easier.
My response is in red.

1. How long is your hair? MBL

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style? Twistouts, buns, wash n gos, twists.

3. Do you have any problems retaining length? No, but the sides of my hair are shorter and have always been this way. They're about BSL and the rest of my hair is MBL

4. How often do you go to the salon? Haven't been to a salon since '07. Very, VERY rarely. I went last month for a press and before that it was two summers ago.

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids? No. No. I usually just try to turn old styles into new ones. So twists will become twistouts which become high buns.

1. How long is your hair?
My hair is HL (hip length). I am relaxed 4b/4c.

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style?
I normally wear my hair in buns, occassionally in braid outs, or just one or two long braids.

3. Do you have any problems retaining length?
No, breakage does not occur for me unless I manually cause the breakage or I put something in my hair that messes up my moisture/protein balance. I am conquering a split-end issue, but I rarely have breakage, so I retain a lot of length.

4. How often do you go to the salon?
I stretch my relaxers for 4-5 months before I go to the salon. I would stretch longer if permitted.

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids?
Not at all! I have never worn a wig/weave before, but I have worn braids w/extensions. For me they did more harm then good. Sometimes I contemplate going back to braids (now that I know how to properly care for them), but for the most part my regular routine has been working w/out any added hair.

1. How long is your hair? BSB or possibly MBL

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style? wash n go

3. Do you have any problems retaining length? besides my scissor addiction? No. But I love the way my hair feels after a haircut and I love to allow the stylist to do what they want.

4. How often do you go to the salon? rarely, at most 3x a year

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids? I don't know any different, but I don't really protective style. I wear my hair out because I enjoy it. I will bun if I'm busy or lazy. But I don't really get the whole protective styling phenomenon.

1. How long is your hair? Mid back length

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style? A bun as a protective style. When it's hot, I wear about 8 braids, and I pin them up.

3. Do you have any problems retaining length? Only when I don't oil my hair consistently.

4. How often do you go to the salon? Twice a month.

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids? I've never wore wigs or weave. I never bought or wore extension braids.

I braid my own natural hair only when the heat is unbearable here in Los Angeles--which is about 90 degrees--but I don't leave it braided more than two or three days/nights in a row.

The coastal heat or dry heat keeps the air balanced--not as humid as Houston and other southern cities I visited during the summer months.

I have a couple of questions for you.

1. How long is your hair? Keep in mind that, I have experienced lots of stress since finding the forum in 08', and I have been experimental and scissor happy. I am fuller, healthier, shoulder length than I was just 8-9 months ago. And growing, fast, and retaining, well.

2. How do you normally wear your hair? What style? Been mostly bunning and straightening (natural hair), due to my lifestyle(stress/depression), but recently began to do more things with stretched and/or blow-dried natural hair. Like, braids (no extensions), braid outs, roller sets, etc. The hair is STILL thriving too.

3. Do you have any problems retaining length? In four years of being a straightened natural I've only lost/ had hair fall out along the perimeter/edges my 'stress points', but I have done plenty trimming/cutting unnessecarily many times.

4. How often do you go to the salon? Never.

5. Do you find it hard to protective style without the aid of wigs, weave and braids?
No.
