Instead of buns/braids/wigs......

I've decided to wear a bun scarf with my hair in plaits underneath. I will get every scarf color in the rainbow so I can switch up to coordinate with what I'm wearing. This allows me to moisturise my hair with spray leave in conditioner every PM, oil my scalp every other day, cowash once a week using Ayurvedic powders and oils. I style my hair on Sundays either in braidout or caruso rollers and Wednesdays a french braid. I also stretch my relaxers every 7 months. I will follow this regime until next relaxer touchup. With this new regime I'm hoping to get some serious thickness and length to my hair.

fancypants007 I applaud that idea. I love scarves and have toyed with doing something similar only doing the GHE instead under the scarf. Maybe one day I will.

Oh yes, I forgot to say that I will be doing the GHE 6 days a week but in the PM after I spray on my leave in conditioner and oils. I have been sporting this look for 2 days and I'm loving it. I just make sure I put on my makeup and some big earrings.

Send a pic, I can't envisage what you're talking about.

Here's a picture.

Instead of buying those scarfs, I go to the fabric store and purchase stretch fabric (usually I buy jersey) and purchase either 1 or 1 1/2 yards. I have purchased fabric in brown, black, maroon, natural, and deep purple. I am loving this look and it's a great protector for the winter months and it also looks stylish. I've just had my share of braids/wigs/buns. I wanted something different and this is it until the spring. I didn't think I would look good in them, but it looks quite attractive.

I have thought to do this too...but i dont know if this would work for work.....

ChocolatePie777, I don't know where you work, but if they don't have any rules about headpieces, I'd just get a plain scarf and dress up nicely in a way that ties in with the scarf.

Or maybe you could start off with wearing a scarf like a headband:

Or you could take advantage of the colder weather by arriving at work looking like this:
which you take off and use around your neck/shoulders, so that you having something on your head starts to look "normal".

Then maybe do a bun with your own hair and cover just the bun with a scarf:

...or use a crocheted bun thingy...again so it is no longer "a new thing":

And on the day you do your scarf bun, you could use a very sheer black scarf that sorta looks like hair from afar...so it's not distracting. Before folks know it, you'll be the scarf queen.

fancypants007, I just saw a bun I am yet to do--top of the head bun:

I understand, but where I work is sooooo laid back. I can wear jeans to work everyday. I thought about putting some vintage looking pins along the side of scarf after wrapping for a dressed up look. I saw some pictures of celebrities sporting this scarf bun look with evening gowns.

Nonie I love the headband looks. I plan to invest in several of those to wear while I let my gray hair grow in. My grey ng loods hideous coming in when my other hair is dark. I am tired of coloring my hair!

Yup, I LOVE the headwrap bun. They were great for retention. In the cold weather, I would rock my satin skull cap underneath as an extra layer of warmth/protection. When they banned them at work, I had to start rocking wigs.

I've been thinking about keep my hair in single braids and rocking a satin scarf only on the bunned part. I may try it one weekend and see how I like it.

I occasionally do this. I use brown and black fabric that I purchased at Walmart years ago.

I love bun scarfs but this would never work at my job.

I guess I should be glad that I have a job that allows me to wear this look. I remember years ago, there was this girl who everyday wore a scarf to work. I never saw her own hair and she was soooo pretty. I just want to sport this look for the winter to protect my hair.

This sounds like a great plan for retention. I can't wear scarves at work, but I'm only there twice a week anyway. I really like the bun in front look.

Yes be glad. I'm not even sure if its in the HR manual or not but its the nosy people in my office that wanna know whats going on underneath. But I work from home alot so I don't have to deal with them everyday.

Are you going to make your own?

Lmao!! U gotta ease it on em. No lie, I wish I started my job wearing scarves like Muslim women do. I wouldn't lie. But they would probably assume and not ask and then my scarves would be looked at as professional.

Case in point: Jewish girls at my job and work. They'll tie a regular old school scarf on their head. No biggie, no second stares. If I did that they would think I was part of the bloodz or the crypts!! Call me in the office and highly suggest that I not wear it. Smh

You are so right about nosey people at work. I wore braids/wigs for years and when I wore my own hair I always wore it up in a bun. Well I've decided to give up wigs/braids etc and I will be wearing my own hair. I wore it down in a french braid which was nearly hitting my waist and I could tell that people were hating. Now I'm coming in to work with this bun scarf. They probably are wondering what's going on underneath. Anyhow, this is the look I'm going to sport for hopefully a few months. I never assumed it would be a problem at work, but I will keep my eyes and ears open.

I just buy fabric fold it over and i'm good to go. Sometimes it works well, but today it seems like I'm struggling with it. I usually buy 1 or 1 1/2 yds of stretch fabric. I'm going to start also with woven fabrics to see how this works. Always with satin cap underneath.

I like this idea. I actually did wear it once to work but got an offhand comment from someone in the cafeteria and it was off putting.

Here's a video of an alternate way to wrap your buns. This method seems to stay in place better for me and I like how this young lady used contrasting colors.

And speaking of colors. I really like how the ladies that wear hijab use prints over top of solids to make pretty scarf wraps. Like the lady in this video.

You can wrap these type of scarves into buns instead of hijabs.

I usually rock these in tichel form (via coveryourhair.com).

I'm getting tired of braid extensions as a protective style. I'm thinking that this winter I might rock a few wigs (with my hair plaited underneath) and wear scarves to the gym.
