Ladies could you help me? Crown breakage.

I have been having more crown breakage than usual. I know that sounds bad but I have a spot in the center of my head, even when I was permed, it just broke off. But now it seems like it is getting worse. I am not willing to cut it and start over. I have been doing the curly girl method for some months now and my hair seems to have more moisture but this breakage just seems like it is getting worse.

I could probably use a protein treatment but is there anything I can use on a weekly basis? I will say that I am not an Aphogee fan but if I have to use it, I will. Is Aphogee necessary or is there something else that is just as good but doesnt stink so bad?

I think I may have to adopt more protective styling because now I wear a lot of wash and gos. I co wash sometimes 2-3 times a week. I didn't use to because I had not mastered the technique. Also I was reading on the internet that frequent wetting of the hair is good for moisture.

Side note: I was thinking of incorporating castor oil in my regimen but how could that work doing cg method?

Does anyone have any suggestions on products or methods? Also, if any of you ladies have had this problem before could you tell me what did you do to rectify it? I know there isn't a quick fix.

Fyi: I wash once a month with sulfate free shampoo. The other weeks I co wash using a suds free shampoo. I condition after that either either using heat or steamer. In between that I co wash and style. Of course I always use a leave, oil then styler.

Girl, join the club. It's one of the reasons why I went natural thinking that it was the relaxer's fault. That spot said, "SYKE!! I'M IS STILL DRY!!" It is sooo dry and it will not absorb ANY moisture. I'm about to order some Roux Porosity Control and hopefully it will help. Girl, don't feel bad. We are in this together.

Mine stopped when i went natural, do you think it could be the regular conditioning with heat? that area in the crown is normally the bit that gets the most heat from the hooded dryer/steamer..

I have the exact same issue, I usually moisturize this area every day. Whenever I am deep conditioning my hair I always put product in this area first. When I slack off, the breakage starts again.

I'm reading this and realizing I have the same thing, only it's a bit wider. When I use to get relaxers, that spot would burn up there like my edges. The rest of my scalp would not. When I stopped getting relaxers, that spot would be sore for a while before it finally stopped. I've had two sets of dreadlocks, and the dreadlocks up there have always been a little shorter than the rest.

Is it a texture difference? Is the scalp just more sensitive in that spot? I don't know.

napturalKMichelle, This is just my theory from my own personal experience. Ongoing breakage and rough hair at the crown is symptomatic of scalp issues. So you want to start treating the scalp. There are a few things I use but I am sure there are others. You want to detox this area often using a mudwash or a clay treatment and apply it directly to the scalp and let it sit for 30 minutes. Also Aubrey Organic conditioners are scalp treatments. Massage those into the scalp. This would be the first step in detoxing and treating the scalp.

Secondly I use a mix of oils with essential oils to heal and help the circulation in this area. I use a mix of castor oil, olive oil, vitamin e and a ceramide. I think mix in 10 to 15 drops of rosemary, sage, thyme and lavender. I apply this and massage it in either the night before I wash or right before I apply my DC.

Hope that helps.

I always apply more product/less manipulation to that area. I make sure it never dries out because I know it's 'weaker' than the rest of my hair.

I keep that area thoroughly moisturized and hydrated.

Also, come over to the Full Edges & Crown Thread for a few additional pointers. Alot of Ladies have made complete turn arounds in those areas.
