Are people still going natural?

A few years ago it seemed almost every other thread on hair boards was about transitioning, big chops, curl definition, etc.

Now, I hardly see those topics on boards. People talk about retention, all the new products on the market, and "transitioning" from natural hair by texturizing. I could be wrong but it seems the going natural train is slowing coming to a halt.

I think they are. I know quite a few ladies going natural, one did the BC a couple months ago. I may be that it has become so common, no one is making it a big deal like they use to.

Just because we don't hear about it, doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Well here in Trinidad the 'going natural train' has just begun.

I believe it has slowed down in the US though, this is just based on following youtube/blogs etc. Many people are going back to relaxing, texturizing, heat training etc. I see a lot of naturals who wear their hair straight most of the time.

I am seeing a lot of it in my area. I was in GA during the holidays & 3 little girls from 9 - 14 told me that they were transitioning. The conversation was cute.

finickyone, in Georgia or in Atlanta? Because Atlanta is the weave capital of the world if I know anything about the people I see around here. LOL.

But then again who knows what girls have under the weave.

I agree I see many teenagers going natural My dd who is 14 transitioned for 1year and just did the BC after Christmas, many of her friends are doing the same.

I agree with others... Ppl are still going natural by transitioning longer & not talking about it as much, but they're def opting for the natural route

Yes. I went natural when I first arrived here many moons ago. Then, I relaxed. Dec. 2011 was the last time that I relaxed. I have been natural since then, and I have only blown out my hair once in that time period. I might stay natural for awhile.:look::lol:

I think people are. Like someone said, it's just not that big of a revelation anymore. Maybe a few years ago, people might start a thread about how they intended to go natural. Now, they might mention it in a transitioning thread.

I think it's both. People are still goin natural and not talkin about it, however, just lookin at my fb alone, i've noticed QUITE a bit of people have went back to relaxers. As a matter of fact, within the last 6 months, i noticed more people who went back to relaxer than the one person who went natural. So I think it's a little of both.

I'm seeing many, many more natural heads. Any time I'm in a group of women and the conversation turns to hair, even the relaxed heads say they plan on going natural at some point and ask lots of questions. My 20 yr old DD's friends are all natural, even though most wear their hair straight 90% of the time.

Everyone I know with long hair (MBL or longer) is natural. I've never seen relaxed long hair IRL, only on LHCF.

BTW, I just finished a 3 1/2 year transition.

JBunnie I was visiting Augusta, GA.

The 9 yr old had the most knowledge. She talked about how the relaxer made her hair thin & the language she used made me believe that she or her mother were educating themselves on the pros & cons of natural hair. The other 2 just loved the look which in itself was also great. My daughter is 11 & up to a year or two ago, in her words, she didn't like her big poofy hair. Now she loves how big it is & how big her twist outs can become. She used to beg to have it flat ironed, not so much anymore.

I think more people are comfortable BCing and transitions linger less. All the info is out there already...no need to post a lot and ask a lot of questions!

OT: I will never relax again!!

I agree. My 16 year old niece is wearing her hair natural and it's beautiful. She wears a lot of twists and flexi rods. It's so thick and pretty.

I live in Augusta and I must say that when I went natural in 2006, there were hardly any naturals, but NOW! they are everywhere! There is even a natural group here called Natural Beauties of Augusta.

People are still going natural in droves. In my church, for example, nearly everyone is natural. Even my 18 year old is transitioning. The thing is no one really makes a big deal about it anymore. It's so common now. It was so dramatic when I transitioned over three years ago. Because my daughter has seen me go through it she knows exactly what to do so we don't really talk about it. The most I have said to her lately is wear a scarf to bed so the pillowcase doesn't break your hair off. That was it.

The train hasn't slowed or stopped. Its just not that foreign anymore. Like someone said there is a load of information out there, tried and true product information, you tube videos tutorials etc on the internet. There isn't much to announce or many unanswered questions anymore. I still look at how to videos on you tube and check out Fotki albums.

 This question is funny to me! Folk going natural left and right, online and off. :yep:

I'm the only relaxed head left in my circle of friends. One of whom swore up and down she'd never ever go natural. :lachen:

Yes, all over youtube and other social sites I've seen plenty. But like someone else mentioned earlier, it's just not as broadcasted as it was a few yrs back when bandwagon was rolling by.

I think they are but there are a lot more natural hair forums and websites now. When I thought about transitioning 10 years ago the only site I happened to come across was nappturality.

I see more and more people going natural every day outside the board though.

Oh yeah...most definitely. I'm going natural now but feel like I am waaaay behind. I'm only 3 mos into my transition. My 2 sisters have been natural for about 4-5 years now and I'm just now getting on board. I feel like there is a wealth of info out there, and I'm enjoying visiting all the sites that cater to natural hair, etc. I am very excited about my journey. :)

Eta: I also think it depends on the region you're in. I visited GA for the holidays and saw lots of naturals. I live in CO and don't see a lot in my town. But then again it's only 6% AA so ummm that explains a lot.

The natural train is definitely still rolling strong from my experience. Everyone in my immediate family (including my cousins and aunts) are natural and so are 90% of my friends and co-workers. I just returned from Atlanta for the holidays and everywhere I went there were loads and loads of natural heads.
It was great running into so many naturals in ATL. I really love the camaraderie and bonding that happens when naturals meet IRL! :grouphug:

Yes, the reminder of my friends with natural within the past year and my last friend to do it was just in the past 1-2 months

In all seriousness I think people are still going natural. There's just more information, more methods and less hype so it isn't always as apparent. LIke I said with all the weaves in the city, you never know what's under someone's sew in

I'm seeing a huge increase in transitioning rather than just doing the BC. I see alot more ladies who tell me: "I haven't permed my hair in X months."

Its nice to see so much support for transitioners. I was a BC-er after an unintentional 10 month transition. I'd planned to relax again but I said **** IT...and chopped. That was 4.5 years ago.
