for the ones that pre poo with just oils?

Have you pre pooed with conditioners before and if so what makes oils a better pick over conditioners for your hair? Do you sit under the dryer with it and then rinse out and shampoo or do you just apply the oil and rinse out? I usually prepoo with conditioner Whether I shampoo or cowash, thinking about going for the oil since the hair is more prone to breakage when wet, anyone see a significant diff going from conditioner to oil?

I did my first hot oil pre poo a few days ago. Before that I used condish.

The differences
Oils
I applied a ton of my favourite oils and essential oils to dry hair scalp and massaged in. I chose ones that are known to penetrate the hair.
Hair easily seperated into sections and shed hairs slipped out easily.
Sat under dryer and then went to bed
Hair was very soft, set the scene for easier detangling, it felt nourished/stronger and scalp was very happy. Hair wasn't mushy.

Conditioner
Hair easily seperated into sections
Cannot apply to the scalp
Because the hair is wet the hair starts to curl up and the tangling saga begins.
dries my hair out if left in too long
Cannot leave it on overnight as my scalp would itch and get inflamed

I will be sticking to hot oil treatments from now on.

I have fine hair so having the conditioner sit on it made it lovely and soft, but it was easy for it to go on the mushy side of soft, due to the moisture in the conditioner. Coupled with the manipulation during shampooing, it was just too much. With oils, there's no mushiness. I use palm oil to pre poo btw. It penetrates, and because it's such a bright colour you know for certain when all the shampoos rinsed out.

For prepoo condish just sits on top of the products I have in my hair. Sometimes it made it feel super built up and I had to shampoo (and I try to stick to cowashing)

Oil seems to penetrate right on through making it easy to detangle. My hair also seems to soften better with oils before the wash. The cuticle lays flatter and smoother too even after the DC.

I have fine texlaxed hair and I like to prepoo with Aphogee 2 min. My hair needs keratin. If I try to go all moisture, it doesn't take long for my hair to get mushy. I pre-poo'd with oils at the beginning of my hhj and, while it was very helpful in removing sheds, the oil was so difficult to rinse out, I'd end up having to shampoo anyway. :ohwell:

I mainly use olive oil to pre-poo regularly. Today though I used a conditioner oil mix to pre-poo because my hair was in a mini two strand twist out for about a week and quite knotty and tangly. My hair needed the slip of the conditioner to remove the knots and tangles.

I use oil 99% of the time to prepoo, both as a natural and when I was relaxed. It softens and helps to remove sheds without irritating my scalp. I always shampoo and never have an issue with the oil coming out

What oils are ya'll using? I tried evco and it made my hair tangled and olive oil made it too greasy and I ended up having to lather multiple times more than I already do.

Interesting that I just spotted this thread. I usually prepoo with conditioner. I've been off my hair game for a while. I decided for no good reason other than to try something new, to prepoo with oils today. I used a mix of Brahmi, amla, maka, rosemary essential oils. I also used a new conditioner to co wash. Not sure if it was the conditioner (Natures Own Aloe Vera) or the oil prepoo, but detangling in the shower was great, comb went through like butter. I'm about to airdry now, I'm interested in seeing the rest of the results.

Castor Oil has no slip.
My hair also hates Olive Oil and Coconut Oil.

Choose oils that your hair likes and ones that are known to penetrate the hair shaft, examples.....

Coconut Oil
Mustard Seed oil
Avocado Oil
Olive Oil

Then you can add essential oils that suit your needs ie stimulate growth, healing, soothing, anti-fungal or just a fragrance that you love.

Thanks. Usually my hair loves Coconut oil and Olive oil but for prepooing it ends up not being the business. I might try my hand at some other penetrating oils and see how that works out for me. I use way too much conditioner as is so replacing it with oil would be perfect for me.

JBCO is my go to pre poo oil. It coats my strands better than most oils I've tried and makes detangling a cinch. Also after poo-ing my hair is so soft even if I've used a deep cleanser like GV TTTT which usually leaves my hair squeaky clean if I've not used an oil.

With conditioner my hair is too wet and gets too tangly afterwards.

My oils of choice are rice bran oil or hemp seed oil for pre-poo or adding to conditioner for added slip. Best I've found for my hair.

Lately, I've been using EVOO infused with Garlic.

I also bought Rice Bran Oil and Mustard Seed recently.

Have used Sweet Almond, Coconut and Jojoba.

I've also used in the past: Palm Oil.

@Fhrizzball grapeseed oil is good to prepoo. It's light and easy to rinse out.

Do you find that it gives good slip? I tend to do my detangling when I prepoo so I guess I want something that's has enough slip for me to detangle but isn't so heavy that I have to overuse my shampoo to get it all out.

Sunflower seed oil is also a good option. Grape seed, though I love it and use it all the time, is a little thicker and may be harder to wash out. Sunflower is lighter and comes out easier imho.

Yes. I like to prepoo with grapeseed when I have a lot of new growth or stretch my relaxers. I place a plastic cap over my head for 30 minutes or do it overnight with my scarf.

I have slip when I rinse and shampoo the oil out of my hair and it's easier to detangle the two textures.

I do both, I put oil on my hair the night before (usually coconut or olive), this helps me separate my hair, cut through the product that is already on my hair, and get the shed hair out, which is important because I wash my hair every 3-4 weeks. Then before washing, I detangle with conditioner for slip, I spray a section with water, apply conditioner and detangle with a wide tooth comb. Between the two, all of the shed hair is gone and my hair is detangled before its wet, thus speeding up the shampoo, deep condition and styling steps.

I used to prepoo with conditioner my hair retained moisture doing this, but I saw no real improvement in the health and strength of my hair, plus I did not like the wet feeling if I did it overnite; then I switched to coconut oil for prepoos, I can't sing enough praises about this, my hair got stronger with minimal breakage, and when I do it overnite I don't have that wet feeling and no drippies.

I am going from thread to thread preaching the gospel of coconut oil prepoos. :yep:

VivaMac I love coconut oil too. I love it sooo much that I use it all over my body and my hair. The smell is divine and it absorbs nicely without feeling greasy on my skin. When I pre-poo, I use coconut oil exclusively. I used to do the conditioner and oil mix, but like some others have said, my hair would be too mushy. Olive oil is good, but COCONUT OIL IS GREAT! I use it and my 5 yr old DD uses it all over. Haven't looked back yet.

You know it. I use it all over too. Funny thing is I recall my aunt telling me to use it for my hair and me telling her how I can't because it dries my ends out, well that's because I was using it to seal and not to prepoo. I use it for prepoos and my fine slow growing hair could not be happier.

I only use conditioner to prepoo if my hair is really tangled (usually from WnG styles). Oil works best for my hair. I never did a HOT but I make sure my hair is saturated before shampooing.

EVOO
Grape seed oil
Coconut oil
