Terressentials users: What ingredients or products did you stop using?

I finally ordered Terressentials Hair Wash and should get it in a few days. From reading other threads, I knew there was a detox process, but I figured I might not need to detox since I already avoid mineral oil and cones. Now that I've placed my order and I'm reading their website, I'm seeing that it says that PVP vinyl, acrylate, silicone, carbomer, or hydrolyzed synthetic protein (soy, wheat, oat) polymer coat the hair too and you would still need to detox. It seems the point is stop using the products too avoid the vicious cycle. I just realized by Curl Junkie gels all have PVP. I had never even heard of this one before!

So those who have continued using Terressentials, did you stop using products with all of these objectionable ingredients?

I did. I was having such issues with my hair feeling wiry I avoid anything that sounds like a plastic. I am also low porosity so I avoid anything that coats the hair and can't be easily washed off. I stopped using PVP before Terressentials. I looked it up and was like :nono:

It is just like anything. There are ladies that didn't do the detox. There are ladies that use the product but kept their old products and just use the terressentials when they want. It really depends on your objective. If you aren't really a die hard natural product person, then do a mini detox and decide from there.

Yes. My only other products now are avocado butter, EVCO, castor oil, water and powdered milk for protein.

Most people don't go cold turkey like this, and still get good results. It's really about what doesn't build up on *you*.

If you have a "hard" detox, with lots of layers of sticky one day, hard the next, you had a lot of buildup and should reevaluate your products and find out what was causing that. If your detox is mild, your products are probably ok.

Yep, the low porosity thing was the very reason I was concerned about PVP and I'm surprised I didn't already know about it. I do like the Curl Junkie products but I notice after about 5 weeks I have to rotate it out, because my hair doesn't seem to respond as well. Maybe that's why.

That's a good idea...I'll try it and see how my hair responds and that should tell me how these ingredients are effecting me.

I started the curly girl method a few months ago and I have been using Left Coast Lemon like once a month. I didn't do the detox process at all as I didn't think it was necessary. My curls pop like nobody's business when I wash with that stuff.

I did the detox and I cut out the products with the exception of one or two natural store bought conditioners . Everything else that I use are oils and butters or home made lotions and creams.

How exactly do you do the detox??

mshoneyfly:

Below are the instructions from http://www.terressentials.com/hairhelp.html:

10. "What is the detox protocol?"
(Please refer to #5 for a way to speed up the time it takes to accomplish this detoxification.)

Refer to the outline below for the seven day Detox Protocol. To start, wet your hair, massage 1-2 tablespoons of "mud" into the hair and scalp for two to four minutes then rinse well. If your hair is longer than chin length, you may need to use more to coat the hair. Try rubbing the mud and hair between the palms of the hands for even coating.
  • Day 1: Three washes, as outlined above (one after the other, leaving the mud on the hair for several minutes before rinsing after the third wash). This is all in the same bath/shower - it's not necessary to take three separate showers!

  • Day 2: Three washes
    Day 3: Two washes
    Day 4: Two washes
    Days 5-7+: One wash
Repeat this entire "detox protocol", days one through seven above, one to two times or as required, to remove synthetic polymer coating agents from the hair.
  • Tip #1 - Remember that the longer the mud is in contact with the hair and scalp the more oil, gum and dirt it can absorb and remove. Also, the more frequently you can wash your hair in the first few weeks, the more quickly you'll finish your "detox".

  • Tip #2 - For very thick, frizzy, kinky hair or hair with "locks," you can dilute the mud to a thinner consistency for easier application, but do NOT add water to the Hair Wash bottle!
Please understand that the protocol outlined above is the average length of time for natural, non-chemically processed hair of short to medium length. The longer, thicker or the more chemically-processed/damaged the hair is, the longer the time it will take to completely "detox" it. Remember that however long it takes, it will be worth it.

I have been using Terressentials for almost a year now and I love it! I now mostly use Naturelle Grow conditioners and leave in, Castor or Argan Oil, and a shea butter and oil mixture but sometimes I will get adventurous and try other products.

Whenever I use a product with "bad" ingredients now my hair feels super waxy and coated. For example, when I tried Entwine products my hair didn't feel good. I didn't do a Terressentials detox to remove those products but I did to two washings (wash, let it marinate, rinse, repeat) with the Terressentials and that seemed to do the trick. I did have to use a little more than usual to remove all of the product but for me the detox would have been a waste of product.

To sum it up, I have to use more Terressentials to wash my hair if I use a product with ingredients on the "no-no" list. If I don't use enough the hair will feel waxy and not quite clean.

Can you just use a mix of Bentonite clay/water to detoxify your hair or must you use the Terressentials shampoo?

If you have tried bentonite clay and your hair likes it, you can detox with that. If the hair tends to be dry the terressentials works better because it has the extra ingredients to provide a softer result than the clay about itself.

There are recipes using bentonite clay, EOs and other things in some of the threads. Sometimes the clay by itself can be too drying.

I don't use Terressentials anymore due to the mess and wanting to make my life easier and more seamless. But I still used all the regular natural products (Curl Junkie,Oyin, etc) when I did.

I had problems with hair pins after using it for a while. Anytime, I used a hair pin, my scalp would hurt. I stopped having this problem when I stopped using Terressentials.
