Yes, YES, and YAS!!! I know exactly what you mean.

My hair is fine and VERRRY tightly coiled! I feel that I very limited to hairstyles because my hair is so fine. And sometimes I feel like I'm going against nature or whatever by trying to grow my hair out.

I have so many splits so I feel like I'm constantly trimming length. I'm sure things would be simpler if I had just medium (not even thick!) hair. *sigh*

I have so much respect for fine haired women who grow their hair to long lengths, ESPECIALLY fine AND 4B.

TaylorT do you know any? I need some inspiration. I've been trying to reach APL since I joined the board.

ya'll singing my tune up in here! Superfine, low density 4XYZ checking in

I also stopped watching YT for style ideas. It just makes me depressed.

I've given up on u-part wigs or weaves or crochet braids with leave-out. With superfine low density hair there has never been a fake hair to even come close to texture. You can always tell the demarcation. :ohwell:

Plus, with low density fine hair, if you're not careful with your leavout--you can see the tracks! Ugh!

Of course I cant do these styles for long because cornrows are asking for breakage. Period.

I'm jealous some of ya'll fine heads have made it past APL. I have gotten there ONCE in my life as a teen. That was 25 years ago :( SL or shorter the rest of my life. :perplexed:

I'd texturize but guess what that looks like? A bunch of whispy spiderwebs. It aint even worth it.

As far as splits and stuff, well I dust 1/4" off every couple months. That's all I got. Trying to make my growth rate faster than my break rate to get some damn length. Sulfur, Ayurvedics, massage, inversion. They seem to be working...

Fine haired. I stick to twist/braid-outs. Protective styling is hard cause I can't have too much weight on it. And SSKs are the devil.

wednesday two ladies I can think of off the top of my head are Nalia1908 on YouTube and Judy4all. I believe Judy4all is a member here. If I'm not mistaken she is now relaxed. But, still very admirable in my opinion.

You hair is so cute in your avi OP. I feel the same way. In fact I've given up trying to grown my hair. I have 4c hair so wash and gos are not an option. My hair has never been long enough for a decent bun. I've been keeping my hair braided up (poetic justice style) but even that takes its toll. I was thinking about cutting it low but I'm scared to because I think my face shape is better suited to longer styles. I stopped watching most YouTube hair gurus because my hair will never do what theirs does.
I just took my hair down from yarn twists, really have no idea what to do next and I'm trying not to go for my scissors!

I could've written this myself. I've given up for a while now, but I've really given up as of friday when I got my hair flat ironed for the 1st time in a year. I hated it when the stylist was done. My hair will never be thick and full even as a bob. Gotta accept it now.

I understand your frustration. I have fine low density hair and I hate it. I wish it were thicker. But it will never be what I want. So I have to accept it for what it is. I don't let it stop me on my journey. I just do styles that work with my hairs density. It may limit me but I'm ok with that. As long as I have a few styles that look good on me I'm ok. I mean for most of my life I just wore it straight out of a wrap. And it looks good like that so why change what aint broken.

Can we see pics of textures and strands ladies?

My strands are on the finer side, except some in the back of my crown. I am also 4b and medium to low density. :ohwell: I don't wear my real hair in individual braids because it looks like spider's legs. :nono: I'm currently BSB and I know I can get it longer, but I know that I won't be able to rock some of the styles in the same way that thick/high density hair can.

Hopefully you are able to even view this strand due to the extreme skinniness.

I agree with everyone here. It can be a bit discouraging because I've been growing since 2010 with NL hair and am just now trying to close in on BSL. I admit that I could have been here and beyond but I spent the first few years cutting off the damaged hair and trying to keep my hemline even. I can't wear my hair straight, I can't do buns and I can't do rollersets regularly because it's just way too much manipulation for my fine strands. I now only wash and DC once every 7-10 days and lightly pin it back.

All those thickening tricks don't work. Our hair is just fine no matter what and for those that have low density like me, it's hopeless. We just have to accept what we do have and make the best of it. For me, only roller sets give me the allusion of thicker hair and the only other option isn't really an option when we're trying to reach goals. That is getting layers (relaxer/texlaxed ladies). Fine/low density heads should really be cut in layers because the one length don't look good at all when you want to wear it down.

My daughter is natural and has fine/low density hair and her hair is super cute in a twist out. I like to wash/co-wash her hair while in twists so that's not an option too often either. I reserve that style for low humidity days and holidays only.

It is what it is ladies and we have to learn to not go against the grain or else we'll remain frustrated forever.

Great thread! I am currently wearing my fine, low density hair in protective styling until I can get to full APL and beyond. My hair is natural 4B and I notice that when I wear it in a more shrunken state vs fully stretched and then styled it looks thicker. I am growing my hair longer so that I can wear twist-outs and braid outs that are done on wet hair vs dry stretched hair if that makes sense. Now that my hair is getting longer, I can totally see how controlled shrinkage can work to my advantage.

I am texlaxed 4b with fine strands/low density...I gave up last year and chopped off my APL hair into a tapered short cut. My low density hair thinned out so bad after taking out a sew in and my years of hard work trying to gain thickness was gone. I started to regret cutting it a few months later. Now I am back on my HHJ but I am getting discouraged because my hair is suffering from bald spots/alopecia in crown and temples due to medical issues. The back has gotten much thicker since growing it back though.

I have fine hair med density. I have to wear small twists and braids for fullness and my hair grows in layers, so curls work best for me too. I made it to bsl and was on my way to mbl, but stupid setbacks and a major hair cut put a stop to that. But I am so determined to make it to bsb by the end of next year. Once my hair got more length, I was able to wear it straight and rock more styles.

I think I have the worst combination.
Very fine strands that are low porosity.

I can't do a da*m thing with this hair....tell me how come I can't do a neat bun even though my hair is past APL. The fuzz and frizzing makes me look like a 5 year old.

I swear there is no point in me having hair at all as it's a daily battle just to look presentable.

I have enjoyed being natural, but just had to find what looked best. Now that I have identified those things, I am having a blast! For instance, when my hair got wet in the shower the other day, I didn't panic the way is used to, I just let it rain!

Fine hair is it's own beast. And paired with a 4c texture on either extreme of porosity is very difficult to retain.

However, through trial and error with products and, most importantly, keeping up with a regular dusting schedule can keep you on track.

It just requires twice the diligence, is all.

NaturalPath your hair looks amazing! I love the colour and the whole look in your avatar. Sometimes we think we need long hair to look good but actually we look pretty damn fine just as we are!

I say switch to maintenance mode and keep it looking good!

My hair just broke off bad :/ I look at pics from just March and I want to cry. I feel like shaving my head and just rocking wigs until I'm dead and buried. That's how I'm feeling right now. I give up on WL. I doubt I'll make it to APL but I'm trying to stay positive. I am just not happy with my hair atm. Unlike a lot of you ladies, my strands are fine, but my hair is actually thick. The only time it's looking thin is when I flat iron after a relaxer, or use too high heat while flat ironing. My hair is best when blow dried but I'm laying off of all of that heat and somehow trying to remember what helped me retain length years ago. There is no excuse for me to be SL after 3 yrs on this journey.

Ok over 3 years without heat and I'm done.
I see no difference in my hair. During that time I've learned and applied all of the rules and the difference is not significant enough for me to panic about using heat again.
Sooo tired of walking around 80% of the time with 'hair that is drying' in lame looking plaits. The combination of fine strands/huge volume and low porosity whilst airdrying is just crazy - and to only have 1 day of hair that looks decent - and is actually tangled to boot.

Blowdried and braided in sections today.

shortdub78 I remember. Your hair looked great, even during pregnancy. :yep: I want my hair to be at least MBL in my longest layers (my back and nape area), shoulder in the front, and below shoulder on the sides.

:yep::yep::yep:

This is the first year in my hair journey where I didn't have any set backs and retained good, healthy, quality hair. Last fall, I started straightening (with heat, yes!!) once a month and dusting. It was very depressing. I have reached APL a minimum of five times over my hhj, just to trim back cuz the ends were scraggly. :nono: I figured I might as well be proactive with the cutting and see where it got me. But it worked! I just passed APL with a few strands skimming BSL. Of course I had to trim it back, but yay! I passed the APL hurdle!

Keep hope alive, y'all! :grouphug:

I sometimes feel this way.

I had to cut my hair from APL to a chin length bob in August.

I think that has been the 5th or 6th time I have done that. Grew it SL or APL and cut it into a bob or pixie. I don't understand it. When it is short, it grows out pretty fast but something happens at SL where it becomes a struggle.

Re: For those with FINE hair...have you ever just said..forget this hair growing stuf

Yall I attempted this style. It was a fail because my hair is longer than hers and it didn't tuck/pin up nicely in the front. But it was really a fail because my twists have huge parts and they are still thin! My bang is not full like that. Looks so weak! :wallbash: I would need to do my twists way bigger and probably need them to be at least a week old.

How often are you all trimming?

I noticed that my fine hair starts looking a mess if I do not do regular trims. But I do not know what a happy medium is with trimming.

Well.....I ended up cutting my hair once AGAIN to a tapered twa (I blame pinterest). 3 weeks later, I am so over it!! I am now wearing wigs which is probably what I should have initially done. Yikes someone needs to just take all of my scissors away from me.

I try to trim once every 2-3 months. The thing is that not only is my hair fine, 3c-4a but it also has a naturally silky texture. I've come to the conclusion that dyeing my hair either through commercial dyes or with henna is the only thing that I can do to make it look a lot thicker. I just have to make sure I stay on track with deep conditioning it more frequently.

Froreal3 hahaha I totally understand where you are coming from. I wish I COULD wear twisted styles as a protective style like WestNDNbeauty but without extensions, they will never look decent.

PinkSunshine77 :hugs: Try wearing wigs for a while after all we are almost approaching winter which is the best time to wear them. This will give your hair a break and then you can provide it the necessary TLC it needs.

Honey_Bee Hey there! When I was relaxed many years ago I struggled growing my hair past collarbone length. Now that I am natural, I have no problems growing my hair to BSL its just that its not as thick as I would love for it to be and I am still limited in variations of styles. When I do straighten my hair you can never can tell how long it is because it "draws up". Although my hair is still fine, I am retaining length a lot better as a natural vs when I was relaxed.

Thank you so much :) I was thinking the same. My relaxer is still fresh, so I'll wait until its a little old and apply my new glueless lace front. It's dynamite.

I trim when the splits are out of control, or when I feel my hair needs it. I don't go crazy with the cut though. My fine hair always has splits.

Heeey! Yeah, I figure I'd probably retain better natural, but it's become a 'thing' with me. :look: I've transitioned, bc'd, and re-relaxed twice before. I wanna at least reach some kinda length goal before I give up again. Plus, you know what they say: going natural doesn't solve hair problems cuz you'll just keep doing the wrong thing. I'm using this time to learn my hair. I'm trynna get down to four t-u's/ year, giving me plenty of time to 'learn my texture'. Hopefully, the next time I go natural (tomorrow or ten years from now), it'll stick because I can handle it. :yep:
