Serious Shedding....Please help

Hello all

I am new to the board so would like to say a warm hello to you all, I am in the United Kingdom. I have been hanging around here for a few weeks reading as much as possible. So much interesting information to absorb!

Anyway, the reason I found LHCF was because about 4 months ago my hair started shedding in amazing amounts to the point where you can now see my scalp on my crown through my thinning hair. It has taken me ages to actively do something about it and I am about to undergo some blood tests to establish whether its hormonal/Thyroid as my skin was also playing up and I am constantly tired, I just have no energy.

My first question is I read alot about protein treatments.

Does anyone think that a protein treatment may stop or at least slow down my shedding. How do I know if I actually need a protein treatment?

If not a protein treatment is there anything I can use to halt or slow down shedding. My hair isnt breaking, when my hair comes out you can see the white bulb at the end.

My hair is natural, I use no heat on my hair.

Any ideas???

Many thanks in advance

Welcome :) As for excessive shedding, I don't have any suggestions. I think you have the right idea in getting some blood test done. Good luck!

 Welcome to the board!

Your symptoms sound like anemia. I'm anemic, and I have those same issues when I don't get enough iron. It's great that you're having blood work done because a CBC will reveal a lot about what's going on inside of you.

A protein treatment may help, but it's important that you correct this problem from the inside. You may want to consider consuming more iron & protein. What is your diet like? How much water do you drink each day? Do you exercise regularly?

Also, you may want to consider garlic shampoo or crushing some garlic in your conditioner. This is supposed to be excellent for decreasing shedding.

Thank you for the replies ladies, its very much appreciated.

I have read somewhere about Garlic decreasing shedding

If I crushed some garlic into my conditioner, does the smell linger at all?

I am almost hoping that something like anaemia shows up as I am so frustrated at not knowing what to do.

I am not taking any iron supplements, I should drink more water, I am starting MSM tomorrow so I know I have to up my daily intake of water to avoid headaches etc. I could always do more exercise, I enjoy running but I have stopped because I am so very tired after work I cant find the energy and motivation to get into the gym or hit the pavements.

Hopefully the blood tests will show whats wrong with me. I do hope its nothing serious. i have never felt like this ever.

Did any of you have hair loss with your anaemia?

You should take a multivitamin which most of the time only has 20 to 30 percent of the daily iron amount. I did not experience shedding while anemic but usually more around period time (this is the more important time of the month to eat more foods rich in iron). Eat more spinach and green leafy vegetables they have lots of iron without the added fat. Also, lean meats are important. When you are eating food with iron allow some fat to be in it also, it needs fat to absorb as many vitamins and minerals do. For example, having spinach cooked in olive oil. Or having a spinach salad with walnuts added into it. Fats that are high in omega and polyunsaturated fats are the GOOD fats (i.e. flaxseed, any nuts you can think of, fish).

You can also check if you have a thyroid condition or another hormonal imbalance. If everything comes back that you are ok, I would then make an appointment with a dermatologist, it could be that you have an allergy or something else.

Stress can cause A LOT of shedding so if everything seems fine work on de-stressing. Exercise, relaxation techniques by way of meditation, or aromatherapy (for example lavendar) may help, also.

Hope that helps.

Hey!

I'm anemic and it does cause me to shed alot at times. Fortunately it's decreased alot. I'm using S-curl and castor oil for moisture and I go days without doing anything to my hair (thank God for the ability to work at home and a S.O. that thinks I'm beautiful even if I were covered in mud, funky meat juice, and feathers.) I'm taking vitamins (nioxin) sporadically and Brags liquid amino's for added protein (I go through times when I hate meat.) :( I also eat alot of salmon when I can. Fish oil helps with my joint issues. I try to get all of my nutrients through food but there are times when I drink whey protein (broken down into two servings) once a day for some extras.:look:

Stress definitely sucks. It can take alot out of you and it really does affect the skin, hair, and digestive systems. (Just vouching because I've had stress issues in the past.) I ran across a vitamin at Walgreens called Stress something or another. Basically it's a vitamin with alot of vital B vitamins in it. I'm taking that every other day or so because I'm sensitive to vitamin C.

Hope everything works out for you! :)

All I can say is Alter Ego Hot Garlic Treatment! Works like a charm. Also, you may want to increase your iron intake, with vitamins or food source

I agree with the poster who suggested taking a multi-vitamin. I take Women's One A Day and it has 100% daily value of iron.

omg me too! lol now I don't feel so bad. I have one of the HUGE ones with my vits spread out so I don't over do it on vitamin C. I need to break that puppy out and make myself take 'em everyday.
