Hi guys. I am new to the forum and had some questions. I was looking into using 100% natural henna and saw that henna should not be used with any metallic substances...I am almost all-natural as far as my hair care regiment goes, but I still use Kerastase products, so I would like someone to tell me what exactly "metallic" substances are and the effect they have on henna. Thanks!!!!!!

Metallic substances are metals (like iron, lithium, and manganese, for instance).

I could lead you to a periodic table but a list is much better because it's not abbreviated and thus shouldn't cause confusion:

I don't use Kerastase products so you'd have to look on your containers to see if the ingredients in them correspond to the names for these metals (whether by themselves or as a compound).

As for the effect they have on henna, metals can react negatively with henna and lead to problems (such as weakening the hair instead of strengthening it along with changing it weird colors), especially if the henna isn't really all natural and has traces of metals in it itself.

P.S. If those Kerastase ingredients do contain any type of metals then that doesn't mean you have to stop using them completely. It just means you shouldn't use them right before, during, and probably not right after a henna treatment either if you are scared about them causing a negative reaction with the henna.

Also, just because a product is "organic" or "natural" doesn't mean it does not contain metals. Metals are natural substances.

Coming in about the sulfur (MTG) and Henna. I use pure henna (from Catherine's site and also from a local store) and in over a year, I've never had a problem with either.

Thanks guys  I'm a neuroscience major so believe me I have the details of what metals are a billion times over, but I am new to the whole hair care thing and I don't want a disaster. I'll be doing a thorough check...thanks again!
